Corner detection by means of adaptively estimated curvature function

A corner detection algorithm is proposed for planar shapes based on a new curvature Function. The main novelty of the function is that its calculation parameters are not constant, but adapt ta the curvature at each point of the contour. The process consists in estimating the maximum length of the contour, yielding no significant discontinuities at each of its points in order to calculate the incremental adaptive chain code of the contour at those points. This improved chain code provides a precise curvature index that enables a better characterisation of the contour to be made. Thus, all corners can be efficiently detected even if working with poor signal to noise ratios.

Motion estimation using low-bit oriented edge image for DCT-based video compression

A novel block-based motion estimation algorithm using a low-bit resolution oriented edge image (LROEI) is proposed. The algorithm produces difference blocks with little texture for DCT coding and enhances the encoding efficiency. Simulation based on a hierarchical subsampling telescope search confirms that the quality of the LROEI is superior to that of luminance image compared with HSTS using an 8 bit luminance image The operational loads are also reduced to 75 or 50% without quality degradation.

Efficient MPEG-4/H/263 video transcoder for interoperability of heterogeneous multimedia networks

As well as some similarities, there are a number of differences between MPEG-4 and the H.263 bitstream syntax. The inclusion of a video transcoder is proposed to achieve interoperability between the two video standards. This novel transcoding algorithm is proved to give highly improved service quality while reducing the complexity and the time delay of conventional cascaded decoding/re-encoding processes.

Efficient method for early detection of all-zero DCT coefficients

Based on the existing method, a more efficient algorithm for detecting all-zero DCT coefficient blocks before implementation of the discrete cosine transform and quantisation in very low bit rare video coding is proposed. The problem of the existing method is shown and an improved algorithm is provided. Simulation shows that the new method improves the detecting performance by similar to 10-20%.

Data re-ordering technique for lossless LZW continuous-tone image compression

A data re-ordering technique is proposed to enhance the compression performance of lossless LZW image compression over continuous-tone images. The proposed scheme incurs few overheads and functions as a preprocessing stage prior to actual compression. The compression performance is increased by an average of 18% for continuous-tone test images compared with the popular GIF compressor.

Digital image watermarking technique based on vector quantisation

A digital image watermarking technique based on vector quantisation (VQ) is presented. This technique uses codeword indices to carry the watermark information. The technique is secret and efficient, and the watermarked image is robust to VQ compression with the same codebook. The simulation results prove the effectiveness of this technique.

Comparison of perceptually uniform quantisation with average error minimisation in image transform coding

An alternative transform coder design criterion based on restricting the maximum perceptual error of each coefficient is proposed. This perceptually uniform quantisation of the transform domain ensures that the perceptual error will be below a certain limit regardless of the particular input image. The results show that the proposed criterion improves the subjective quality of the conventional average error criterion even if it is weighted with the same perceptual metric.

Adaptive resynchronisation marker positioning method for error resilient video transmission

For reliable video transmission over error-prone mobile channels, an adaptive resynchronisation marker positioning (RMP) method is proposed for rapidly resynchronising the VLC decoding synchronisation which is often lost due to channel errors. The simulation results show that the proposed adaptive RMP method gives a remarkable improvement over the fixed RMP method.

Computation reduction for intra 4x4 mode decision with SATD criterion in H.264/AVC

In H.264 advanced video coding standard, the intra prediction made by referring to the surrounding coded pixels plays an important role in achieving the compression efficiency. To find the best prediction mode, the H.264 reference software JM 6. 1 d suggests two criteria, the sum of absolute differences (SAD) and the sum of absolute transformed differences (SATD). The SATD criterion with extra Hadamard transform achieves better coding performance, but needs more computation than the SAD criterion. A fast algorithm is developed to reduce the computation of the SATD, by using the property of linear transform and the fixed-spatial relationship of predicted pixels in each intra mode. With the fast SATD computation, about 50% computation of the original SATD algorithm can be reduced. To further reduce the SATD computation, a two-stage simplified SATD method is proposed, which first uses the SAD criterion to eliminate some unwanted modes and then performs the fast SATD computation to select the best mode. Experimental results show that the proposed two-stage simplified SATD method can save about 70% of computation costs with negligible PSNR loss for H.264 intra prediction.
