Modifications on morphology-based image coding

An extension uf morphology-based image coding is presented. Tv achieve better coding efficiency neighbour coefficients are included into the significance m;ip predictor and different subband quantisers are employed to achieve the optimal quantiser fur each subband in a rare-distortion sense, Experimental results show. that about 0.4-0.7dB peak signal-to-noise ratio pain can be obtained.

Integral image compression based on optical characteristic

The large amount of image data from the captured three-dimensional integral image requires to be presented with adequate resolution. It is therefore necessary to develop compression algorithms that take advantage of the characteristics of the recorded integral image. In this study, the authors propose a new compression method that is adapted to integral imaging. According to the optical characteristics of integral imaging, most of the information of each elemental image is overlapped with that of its adjacent elemental images. Thus, the method is to achieve image compression by taking a sample from the elemental image sequence for every m elemental image to get image compression. Experimental results that are presented to illustrate the proposed compression technique prove that the proposed technique can improve the compression ratio of integral imaging.

Hierarchical motion estimation in Hadamard transform domain

The authors propose a hierarchical motion estimation algorithm in which the sum of the absolute difference in the Hadamard transform domain is used as its matching measure. The computational complexity of this algorithm was reduced to similar to 5.6% while the image degradation of its reconstructed image quality was < 0.1 dB on average, compared with that of the full search in the pixel domain.

Multiple-thread long-term memory scheme for efficient video coding

It has been shown that a background memory can be used to improve the coding efficiency of a video codec. However, this solution is restricted to sequences with a stationary background. Such a restriction seriously limits the application of the background memory scheme. The authors combine the long-term memory scheme with a multiple-thread memory mechanism to boost the coding efficiency for a much wider application range. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Lossless compression algorithm for colour images

A new segmentation-based lossless compression method is proposed for colour images. The method exploits the correlation existing among the three colour planes by treating each pixel as a vector of three components, and performing region growing and difference operations using the vectors. The method performs better than the JPEG standard by an average of 0.68 bit/pixel with a 12 image database.

Performance bounds for double sampling ML-DD feedback timing synchronisers in turbo code systems

Systems combining turbo codes with decision directed feedback synchronisers have been suggested as a way to improve tracking performance of the receiver at low E-S/N-O. In this work the operation ui such schemes for the Digital video Broadcasting (DVB) standard is investigated and the limitations that bound their performance are analysed. It is shown that these systems are possible with restrictions imposed on the interleaver size of the turbo code system.

Efficient significance map coding using block-based zerotree and quadtree

Far wavelet-based image coding, it is important to efficiently code the significance map for each bit plane. The proposed algorithm provides an effective method for coding the significance map by using block-based zerotree and quadtree decomposition, and demonstrates good R-D performance especially at low bit rates and for images with rich texture.

Parallel H.263 video encoder in normal coding mode

A parallel H.263 video encoder, which utilises spatial pal allelism, has been modelled using a multi-threaded program. Spatial parallelism is a technique where an image is subdivided into equal parts las far as physically possible) and each part is processed by a separate processor by computing motion and texture coding with all processors each acting on a different part of the image. This method leads to a performance increase, which is roughly in proportion to the number of parallel processors used.
