Hybrid semantic and codebook mouth animation scheme for model-based coded video

Previous model-based codecs have used two distinct approaches for mouth animation, namely texture codebooks or semantic animation parameters. Each approach when used on its own suffers drawbacks in terms of a bit rate/quality trade-off. An investigation is presented into the performance of a new hybrid scheme for mouth animation in which codebooks and semantics are combined and switching between them is achieved depending on the amount of motion exhibited by the lips. Experiments show that both subjective quality and PSNR measures of the reconstructed images are improved.

Fast nearest neighbour searching algorithm using L₁ norm

Simple but effective fast codebook searching algorithms for vector quantisation are presented. The Euclidean distance (L-2 norm) calculation requires a number of multiplications. The proposed algorithms use the L-1 norm between the input vector and codeword to discard many unlikely codewords. Since the proposed algorithms significantly reduce the number of multiplications, a considerable reduction in encoding time is achieved. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Low power embedded extension algorithm for lifting-based discrete wavelet transform in JPEG2000

A novel algorithmic technique for reducing power and area consumption of the discrete bracelet transform, (DWT) on CMOS-based DSP architectures is presented. The technique reduces power by combining the data-extension procedure into the lifting based DWT core. It is demonstrated that the nc v algorithm can be used to obtain more than 50% reduction in the amount of memory required, leading to significant reduction in area and po vcr.

A new video compression algorithm based on a temporal blocking structure, rather than the more conventional spatial blocking structure, is described. This blocking structure forms the basis of an adaptive vector quantisation (VQ) algorithm, the performance of which is then compared with a similar adaptive VQ scheme based on a spatial blocking structure.

Fast motion-estimation algorithm based on progressive partial norm matching

A fast block-motion-estimation algorithm, based on progressive partial norm matching, is proposed. This fast algorithm obtains the best estimate of motion vectors with a significantly reduced computational load by successively exploiting the partial norms Of the variable partitioned subblocks and thus effectively eliminating invalid search points. Simulation results demonstrate that computation time has been reduced dramatically, while the performance of the proposed algorithm is the same as that using an exhaustive search.

Modified embedded zerotree wavelet algorithm for fast implementation of wavelet image codec

Embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW) coding, proposed by Shapiro, is one of the commonly used algorithms for wavelet image coding. The speeds of coding and decoding are important issues in the implementation of an image codec. The algorithm proposed by Shapiro requires large execution times due to the numerous comparisons involved. This algorithm is modified to improve the speeds of the encoder and the decoder without otherwise affecting the performance. The modification results in faster software implementation and much faster implementation on a hardware-like platform (tested here using a DSP).

Data scheduling scheme for power reduction in DWT-based image coders

A new memory data scheduling scheme is used for designing a two-dimensional discrete wavelet transform (2D-DWT) core for ASIC implementation. This scheme reduces by 20 to 30% the overall switching activity in the 2D-DWT core and hence leads to lower power consumption at the expense of a slight reduction in the quality of reconstructed images and a slight increase in the chip area. This scheme is particularly useful in applications such as wireless Internet and laptop computers, in which picture quality can be traded-off for reduced power consumption.

Algorithm for removing DCT noise patterns in block encoded images

A novel post-processing technique is presented which reduces DCT noise patterns in block coded images. The proposed technique first estimates the DCT noise patterns across the image, then reduces this particular distortion by appropriate filtering. The simulation results show that the proposed technique provides good subjective qualities.

image fragile watermarking based on fusion of multi-resolution tamper detection

A new discrete wavelet transform-based image fragile watermarking scheme exploiting the features of the human visual system is presented. Fusion of multi-resolution tamper detections, and mathematical morphology operations are developed for accurate tamper detection. As a result, malicious tamper and the tampered regions can be detected, while toleration towards high quality lossy image compression is achieved.
