Multi-image encryption algorithm based on image hash, bit-plane decomposition and dynamic DNA coding

Problems such as large data volumes, slow transmission rates and low security often occur when transmitting multiple digital images over the internet. In order to protect the content security of multiple images and improve the speed of internet transmission, a multi-image encryption algorithm based on image hash, bit-plane decomposition and dynamic DNA coding is proposed in this study. First, the proposed algorithm merges several grey images and image hashing algorithm is used to generate the initial key for chaotic mapping. Second, the random sequence generated by the improved three-dimensional chaotic map is used to decompose the bit plane of the merged image and the bit-plane matrix is substituted numerically. Finally, the random sequence generated by the four-dimensional hyperchaotic system is used to perform dynamic DNA coding and calculation on the image and the final multiple ciphertext images are generated by decomposition of the pixel matrix. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has large key space, strong key sensitivity, strong security and robustness, and can resist various conventional attacks such as statistical analysis, differential attack, exhaustive attack, cropping and noise attack.

Motion vector generation for video coding by gray prediction

An efficient prediction algorithm for motion vectors in video compression is proposed. Motion estimation is an important part in motion compensated video encoding system, which is used to eliminate the temporal redundancy in video sequence. Motion vectors dominate the quality of decoded video so that the generation of motion vectors is an important topic in video coding. Exhaustive block matching algorithm (EBMA) can get the optimal solution for motion vectors, but it takes much computational burden. In the proposed method, the authors use gray prediction to obtain the motion vectors. Gray prediction can predict the motion vectors quickly and accurately. Several video sequences are used to evaluate the performance in this study, and the experimental results show that the time that the proposed method needed is only 1.93% compared to EBMA and 11.75% compared to three steps searching algorithm whereas the degradation of PSNRY compared to EBMA is about 0.43 dB at most, which is almost invisible to human eyes.

Generalised Gaussian distribution to early detect zero quantised discrete cosine transform coefficients in H.264/AVC video encoding

In H.264/AVC video encoding, zero quantised discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients blocks, called ZQBs, are quite common in low bit-rate video applications. The computations of DCT and quantisation can be remarkably reduced if ZQBs are detected prior to DCT and quantisation. A mathematical model is established based on analysing DCT coefficient distribution and applying the generalised Gaussian distribution theorem. Using this model, four conditions corresponding to four kinds of transform and quantisation methods are proposed. As compared with other methods in the literature, the proposed method is able to detect more ZQBs and hence reduce more computations. Experimental results show our method is superior to other methods in terms of the total number of reduced computations and usability.

New adaptive steganographic method using least-significant-bit substitution and pixel-value differencing

This study presents a new adaptive data-hiding method based on least-significant-bit (LSB) substitution and pixel-value differencing (PVD) for grey-scale images. The proposed method partition the cover image into some non-overlapping blocks having three consecutive pixels and select the second pixel of each block as the central pixel (called base-pixel). Then, k-bits of secret data are embedded in the base pixel by using LSB substitution and optimal pixel adjustment process (OPAP). The difference between the base-pixel value and other pixel values in the block are utilised to determine how many secret bits can be embedded in the two pixels. Also, the method divides all possible differences into lower level and higher level with a number of ranges. Then, it obtains the number of the secret bits that will be embedded into each block depending on the range which the difference values belong to. The experimental results show that the proposed method can embed a large amount of secret data while maintaining a high visual quality of the stego-images. The peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) values and the embedding capacity of our method are higher than those of three other data-hiding methods which are investigated in this study.

Hierarchical guided network for low-light image enhancement

Due to insufficient illumination in low-light conditions, the brightness and contrast of the captured images are low, which affect the processing of other computer vision tasks. Low-light enhancement is a challenging task that requires simultaneous processing of colour, brightness, contrast, artefacts and noise. To solve this problem, the authors apply the deep residual network to the low-light enhancement task, and propose a hierarchical guided low-light enhancement network. The key of this method is recombined hierarchical guided features through the feature aggregation module to realize low-light enhancement. The network is based on the U-Net network, and then hierarchically guided with the input pyramid branch in the encoding and decoding network. The input pyramid structure realizes multi-level receptive fields and generates a hierarchical representation. The encoding and decoding structure concatenates the hierarchical features of the input pyramid and generates a set of hierarchical features. Finally, the feature aggregation module is used to fuse different features to achieve low-light enhancement tasks. The effectiveness of the components is proved through ablation experiments. In addition, the authors are also evaluating on different data sets, and the experimental results show that the method proposed is superior to other methods in subjective and objective evaluation.

Tensor-based projection using ridge regression and its application to action classification

In this study, the authors encode video sequence by a third-order tensor instead of matrices or vectors and present a novel framework of action classification via tensor-based projection using ridge regression (TPRR). The main contributions of this framework include: (i) Classification can be directly achieved by projecting the tensor samples into their binary class label through ridge regression technique. (ii) TPRR algorithm is further generalised from binary classification to solve multi-category classification problem by incorporating the error correcting concept. Experiments of action classification on a small or medium training set demonstrate that this approach outperforms previous tensor embedding methods and other state-of-the-art techniques, whereas on large training set, it is also able to achieve very satisfactory results. The proposed approach is further proven to be considerably robust to viewpoint, partial occlusion and irregularities in motion styles.

To achieve the high-resolution inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging of moving targets, the range Doppler method and compressed sensing technique can be used. However, those methods are generally faced with the problem of migration through range cells and basis mismatch problems, and the imaging results can be improved. To solve these problems and improve the image quality, the problem of ISAR imaging is termed as a block-sparse signal recovery problem by utilizing the block-sparse structure of the ISAR images. A localized low-rank promoting (LLP) method is introduced and extended to the complex case for the recovery of range compressed block-sparse signals. The sparse recovery problem is solved by minimizing another function, which is the surrogate function that can be solved more effectively. Based on the LLP method, the coefficients of the range compressed echo signal are reconstructed and some 2 x 2 matrices can be obtained. And then the log-determinant function is introduced to find the low rankness solutions for these matrices. Then the LLP method is also used in the cross-range domain to reconstruct the ISAR image. Experimental results show that the proposed method can recover better focused and higher quality ISAR images compared with the traditional methods.

Lossless re-coding using integer linear programming for H.264/MPEG-4 AVC

This study addresses the multi-generation distortion (re-loss) issue of intra-coding, which is introduced by the irreversible operation of current clip operation. In order to implement the lossless re-coding in intra-coding in modified H.264/AVC, this study first proposes a novel optimal clipping algorithm based on integer linear programming (ILP) to eliminate the re-loss caused by traditional saturation clipping. Furthermore, a new cost function of intra-prediction guarantees the prediction mode of successive coding generations to be the same as that of the first generation. Experimental results show that the ILP-based intra-coding method completely eliminates the video degradation occurred in the second and later generations of encoding/decoding and achieves superior performance in comparison with current intra-coding method in H.264.

Automated region-based hybrid compression for digital imaging and communications in medicine magnetic resonance imaging images for telemedicine applications

Many classes of images contains spatial regions which are more important than other regions. Compression methods which are capable of delivering higher reconstruction quality are attractive in this situation for the important parts. For the medical images, only a small portion of the image might be diagnostically useful, but the cost of a wrong interpretation is high. Hence, Region Based coding (RBC) technique is significant for medical image compression and transmission. Lossless compression in these 'regions' and lossy compression for rest of image can helps to achieve high efficiency and performance in telemedicine applications. This paper proposes an automated, efficient and low complexity, lossless, scalable RBC for Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) images. The advantages of RBC are exploited in this paper, segmenting the region into various regions of importance and subjecting varying bit-rates for optimal performance. Moreover, the combined effects of Integer Wavelet Transform (IWT) and bit-rate limiting compression technique for lesser important regions helps reconstruct the image, reversibly, up to a desired quality. The overall compression thus reaches a satisfactory level to be able to safely transmit the image in limited bandwidth over a telemedicine network and reconstruct diagnostic details for treatment, most faithfully.

Very-large-scale integration design of a low-power and cost-effective context-based adaptive variable length coding decoder for H.264/AVC portable applications

Context-based adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC) is a new and efficient entropy coding tool in H.264/AVC (advanced video coding). This study proposes a low-power and cost-effective CAVLC decoding architecture for the H.264/AVC baseline profile. Specifically, this study proposes an optimum two-layer power model for the variable length look-up table (VLUT) in the CAVLC decoder, and divides the decoding phase of the LUT into two-layer decoding to reduce power consumption. To achieve a cost-effective design, the proposed design merges common codewords to reduce the hardware cost among different LUTs in the second layer decoding. The proposed decoder is based on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) 0.18 mu m CMOS technology, and was completely verified on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) emulation platform. The proposed design meets the demands of the real-time CAVLC decoding and reduces power consumption by 44-48% more than previous low-power CAVLD schemes. Finally, the proposed low-power and cost-effective CAVLD design is suitable for H.264/AVC portable applications.
