image display time is defined as the time taken to load, decode, and render images on a screen. When users attempt to open images stored on a mobile phone, they can sometimes feel that it takes a lot of time to display the images. This paper analyzes the various causes of the delay and presents ideas to reduce the time and improve the customer's experience. To evaluate these ideas, an enhanced image viewer application was implemented and evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively by comparing it to the existing viewer. Experimental results show that the proposed solutions can reduce image display time by more than 10 % for high-pixel images. In addition, it can reduce thumbnail construction times effectively.

Transform-based image codec follows the basic principle: the reconstructed quality is decided by the quantization level. Compressive sensing (CS) breaks the limit and states that sparse signals can be perfectly recovered from incomplete or even corrupted information by solving convex optimization. Under the same acquisition of images, if images are represented sparsely enough, they can be reconstructed more accurately by CS recovery than inverse transform. So, in this paper, we utilize a modified TV operator to enhance image sparse representation and reconstruction accuracy, and we acquire image information from transform coefficients corrupted by quantization noise. We can reconstruct the images by CS recovery instead of inverse transform. A CS-based JPEG decoding scheme is obtained and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed methods significantly improve the PSNR and visual quality of reconstructed images compared with original JPEG decoder. Given the prevalence of JPEG compressed images on the Internet, image reconstruction from the compressed format remains an important and practical problem. Instead of simply reconstructing a pixel block from the centers of assigned DCT coefficient quantization bins (hard decoding), we propose to jointly reconstruct a neighborhood group of pixel patches using two image priors while satisfying the quantization bin constraints. First, we assume that a pixel patch can be approximated as a sparse linear combination of atoms from an offline-learned over-complete dictionary. Second, we assume that a patch, when interpreted as a graph-signal, is smooth with respect to an appropriately defined graph that captures the estimated structure of the target image. Finally, neighboring patches in the optimization have sufficient overlaps and are forced to be consistent, so that blocking artifacts typical in JPEG decoded images are avoided. To find the optimal group of patches, we formulate a constrained optimization problem and propose a fast alternating algorithm to find locally optimal solutions. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art soft decoding algorithms by up to 1.47 dB in PSNR.

Recently, digital image inpainting technique based on variational and partial differential equation has been researched widely. In this paper, image inpainting is applied to image encoding and a novel scheme of encoding is proposed. In the encoding, applying an edge detector to detect the edge. In addition, the four boundaries of the image also belong to the edge collection;next, generating small neighborhoods of the edge collection to get an edge-extended image, then encoding the addresses of the edge-extended image and using high bit rate to accurately code the gray values of it. So, a high compression rate is achieved. Unlike the traditional decoding, here the decoding is realized by a harmonic inpainting model to achieve a good quality of reconstructed image. At the end, a lot of images are simulated. These simulated results show that with this scheme proposed, one can get a good quality of reconstructed image in a high compression rate.

In this paper, we demonstrate a solution to use cameras to down-load data to cell phones as an alternative to existing wireless (CDMA/GPRS, BlueTooth), infrared or cable connections. In our method the data is encoded as a sequence of images, which can be displayed on any flat display, captured by users with their camera phones, and decoded by pre-embedded software. To solve this problem we need to be able to (1) encode arbitrary data as a sequence of images, (2) process captured images under various lighting variations and perspective distortions while maintaining realtime performance, and (3) decode the processed images robustly even when partial data is lost. In the paper we address these challenges in detail and present our solution. We have implemented a prototype which allows users to successfully download various types of files, including pictures, ring tones and Java programs to the camera phones. We discuss the limitations of our solution, and future works to overcome these limitations.
