A realistic structure model for large-scale surface leaving radiance simulation of forest canopy and accuracy assessment

The radiosity-graphics model (RGM) is an important branch of computer simulation modelling for the vegetation bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). As the radiosity method is based on a global solving technique, the RGM can only deal with limited numbers of polygons, and has only been used for small-scale flat terrain scenes. However, the land surface is generally rugged, so it is necessary to extend the RGM to simulate the surface leaving radiance of the forest canopy at a large scale with complex topography. The methodology adopted in this paper is: (1) virtual forest scene generation combined with a digital elevation model;(2) scene division method, shadowing effect correction and multiple scattering calculation;(3) merging the simulated sub-scene bidirectional reflectance factors (BRFs) to get the whole-scene BRF. The paper compares this new method with other models by choosing a large-scale conifer forest scene with a GAUSS terrain from RAMI3 (http://***). Multi-angle imaging spectroradiometer (MISR) data are used to validate the extended RGM in a Picea crassifolia forest area at a satellite pixel scale in the field campaign in Gansu Province, China. The root mean square error and correlation coefficient between the simulated BRF and the MISR BRF are 0.018 and 0.98, respectively. The uncertainty and error sources of the large-scale RGM model are thoroughly analysed.

Estimating woody browse abundance from aerial imagery

In the deciduous forests of the eastern US, timber harvest programmes are often designed to increase the availability of woody browse for terrestrial wildlife. However, assessing the efficacy of timber harvest at increasingly available browse has traditionally required labour-intensive field-based measurements of woody plant growth and abundance. The objective of this study was to use readily available digital aerial imagery to estimate the amount of woody browse in regenerating clearcuts in central West Virginia. Aerial imagery from the National Agriculture imagery Program and woody browse data collected from 11 regenerating clearcuts in the summer of 2007 were used in this analysis. Red, green and blue visible bands, as well as a simple texture metric, were used to create a multiple linear regression model to predict the amount of woody browse. The final model exhibited large correlation (R 2=0.94) and was statistically significant (F=22.48, p=0.0009), indicating that simple measures of image digital numbers and texture have potential utility in assisting forest and wildlife managers to assess habitat quality in forest regeneration areas.

Seam Carving for Media Retargeting

Traditional image resizing techniques are oblivious to the content of the image when changing its width or height. In contrast, media (i.e., image and video) retargeting takes content into account. For example, one would like to change the aspect ratio of a video without making human figures look too fat or too skinny, or change the size of an image by automatically removing "unnecessary" portions while keeping the "important" features intact. We propose a simple operator;we term seam carving to support image and video retargeting. A seam is an optimal 1D path of pixels in an image, or a 2D manifold in a video cube, going from top to bottom, or left to right. Optimality is defined by minimizing an energy function that assigns costs to pixels. We show that computing a seam reduces to a dynamic programming problem for images and a graph min-cut search for video. We demonstrate that several image and video operations, such as aspect ratio correction, size change, and object removal, can be recast as a successive operation of the seam carving operator.

Automated processing of Sea Surface images for the Determination of Whitecap Coverage

Sea surface images have been collected to determine the percentage whitecap coverage (W) since the late 1960s. image processing methods have changed dramatically since the beginning of whitecap studies. An automated whitecap extraction (AWE) technique has been developed at the National University of Ireland, Galway, that allows images to be analyzed for percentage whitecap coverage without the need of a human analyst. AWE analyzes digital images and determines a suitable threshold with which whitecaps can be separated from unbroken background water. By determining a threshold for each individual image, AWE is suitable for images obtained in conditions of changing ambient illumination. AWE is also suitable to process images that have been taken from both stable and nonstable platforms (such as towers and research vessels, respectively). Using techniques based on derivative analysis, AWE provides an objective method to determine an appropriate threshold for the identification of whitecaps in sea surface images without the need for a human analyst. The automated method allows large numbers of images to be analyzed in a relatively short amount of time. AWE can be used to analyze hundreds of images per individual W data point, which produces more convergent values of W.

Technical Perspective Customizing Media to Displays

The article discusses an article published elsewhere in the issue which examines the customization of media displays. Watching movies filmed with a wide-screen format on a wide-screen television is good, the author says, but watching shows filmed with any other format distorts the image. A technique called "seam carving," developed by scientists Ariel Shamir and Shai Avidan, cuts out pixels to areas considered less important, the article indicates. Other topics include importance measured by the need to preserve humans or objects and seams as a connected path of low-energy pixels.
