In this paper we present an unsupervised clustering technique for multispectral segmentation of magnetic resonance (MR) images of the human brain. Our scheme utilizes the Self-Organizing Feature Map (SOFM) Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for feature mapping and generates a set of codebook vectors for each tissue class. Features are selected from three image spectra: T1, T2 and proton density (PD) weighted images. An algorithm has been developed for isolating the cerebrum from the head scan prior to the segmentation. To classify the map, we extend the network by adding an associative layer. Three tissue types of the brain: white matter, gray matter and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) are segmented accurately Any unclassified tissues were remained as unknown tissue class.

We present several objective functions for vector field segmentation. Leclerc's MRF model is extended by the addition of information-theoretic penalties for regions and distinct means. Massively parallel optimization algorithms are presented. Standard methods of signal detection and estimation are used to develop a theoretical performance analysis, which quantitatively predicts the performance at realistic noise levels. Theoretical and experimental results agree fairly well.

One of the central problems of computer vision is segmentation of images into salient features such as edges and surfaces. Different kinds of similarity criteria can be used to group related pixels together. One such criterion is the curvature of surfaces in an image of a multiobject scene that contains several objects with different shapes. In practice, however, curvature is difficult to calculate because small amount of noise can cause large amounts of errors in calculations of first and second derivatives. In this paper, we use a discrete approximation of Gaussian curvature that is efficient to compute. The approximation is used to segment the image into individual surfaces. Both synthetic and real images have been tested. Results appear quite encouraging.

The effects of removing illumination gradients on the spatial distribution characteristics of visible fat within beef longissimus dorsi muscle were investigated. Gradients were assumed to be slowly varying and were removed by subtracting a smoothed version of the image from the original. Two types of filters were used to smooth the images: a linear lowpass filter and a greyscale morphological opening. The effects of the two filters on the binary images after thresholding using a Boolean random set model were investigated. Results showed that the choice of filter significantly influenced model parameter estimates. It was concluded that the morphological filter provided the most consistent means of eliminating adverse effects of illumination gradients. 1.

Segmentation of the prostate in magnetic resonance (MR) images has many applications in image-guided treatment planning and procedures such as biopsy and focal therapy. However, manual delineation of the prostate boundary is a time-consuming task with high inter-observer variation. In this study, we proposed a semiautomated, three-dimensional (3D) prostate segmentation technique for T2-weighted MR images based on shape and texture analysis. The prostate gland shape is usually globular with a smoothly curved surface that could be accurately modeled and reconstructed if the locations of a limited number of well-distributed surface points are known. For a training image set, we used an inter-subject correspondence between the prostate surface points to model the prostate shape variation based on a statistical point distribution modeling. We also studied the local texture difference between prostate and non-prostate tissues close to the prostate surface. To segment a new image, we used the learned prostate shape and texture characteristics to search for the prostate border close to an initially estimated prostate surface. We used 23 MR images for training, and 14 images for testing the algorithm performance. We compared the results to two sets of experts' manual reference segmentations. The measured mean standard deviation of error values for the whole gland were 1.4 +/- 0.4 mm, 8.5 +/- 2.0 mm, and 86 +/- 3% in terms of mean absolute distance (MAD), Hausdorff distance (HDist), and Dice similarity coefficient (DSC). The average measured differences between the two experts on the same datasets were 1.5 mm (MAD), 9.0 mm (HDist), and 83% (DSC). The proposed algorithm illustrated a fast, accurate, and robust performance for 3D prostate segmentation. The accuracy of the algorithm is within the inter-expert variability observed in manual segmentation and comparable to the best performance results reported in the literature.

In this paper, a general philosophy about feature windows based applications and a windows-based application are presented for analysis, algorithm development, testing and validation studies for Signal, image and Data processing (SIDP) for Space-Based Surveillance (SBS) Applications. This dedicated facility is called AUG_SIDP. It performs several specialized tasks such as blur estimation, restoration, CFAR detection, clutter modeling, registration, pixel and data level fusion, target tracking and classification. It is still in the development and testing phase.

This paper introduces a new class of bases, called bandelet bases, which decompose the image along multiscale vectors that are elongated in the direction of a geometric flow. This geometric flow indicates the direction in which the image grey levels have regular variations. The image decomposition in a bandelet basis is implemented with a fast subband filtering algorithm. Bandelet bases lead to optimal approximation rates for geometrically regular images. For image compression, the bandelet basis geometry is optimized with a fast best basis algorithm. Comparisons are made for image compression with wavelet bases.

This paper deals with the problem of robust fast recognition of partially occluded or incomplete views of `flat' objects. Robustness is accomplished through hypothesis confirmation using complementary or supporting information available for the current hypothesis and by model-based hypothesis verification. Classification speed is obtained by pruning the hypothesis hierarchy using simple pruning procedures based on structural properties derived from current object representation. In addition, classification speed is also improved through the use of simple model-based decision making procedures instead of computationally expensive transformations. Normalized Interval Vertex Descriptors (NIVD) are used to represent objects. NIVDs are representations derived from the physical characteristics of an object (vertices and sides) that are easy to obtain, especially for polygon like shapes. They provide not only a compact representation, but they also allow the definition of features that can be used to speed up the classification process. Experimental results of this process are also included.

This paper presents an algorithm for segmentation of textured images. The algorithm uses an unsupervised neural network and K-means method to classify: image pixels based ori image local spatial-frequency information. The short-time Fourier transform employs large size window function to extract more neighborhood information. The problems of introducing large size windows in classifying larger transient regions are also investigated. High segmentation resolution is obtained by an novel image extrapolation approach and a re-classification procedure for transient areas.

Detecting targets from infrared (IR) images in the absence of a priori information is a very difficult task. In this paper, we present an unsupervised detection algorithm based on Gabor functions for detecting targets from a single IR image frame. The only explicit assumption made is that the targets can be considered a rectangle. The algorithm consists of three steps. First, it locates potential targets based on a rectangle matching pattern by using low resolution Gabor functions which resist noise and background clutter effects. Then it removes false targets and eliminates redundant target points based on a similarity measure. These two steps mimic human vision processing but are different from Zeevi's Foveating Vision System. Finally, it uses both low and high resolution Gabor functions to verify target existence. This algorithm has been successfully tested on several IR images that contain multiple examples of military vehicles and aircraft with different size and brightness in various background scenes and orientations.
