in this paper we present an approach for association and registration of multi-sensor images. With no loss of generality, we consider herein the association and registration of SAR and Visible satellite images. Although the current approach as presented is a semi-automatic registration technique, there is sufficient promise for the development of a fully automatic multi-sensor multi-spectra registration approach. Some experimental results are presented.

A new approach is developed for detection of image objects and their orientations, based on distance transforms of intermediate level edge information(i.e., edge segments and vertices). Objects are modeled with edge segments and these edges are matched to edges extracted from an image by correlating spatially transformed versions of one with a distance transform of the other. Upper bounds on change in cross- correlation between edge maps and distance transforms are shown to be simple functions of change in translation and rotation. The process of computing the optimal object rotation at each possible translation can be accelerated by one to two orders of magnitude when these bounds are applied in conjunction with an object translation-rotation traversal strategy. Examples with detection and acceleration results demonstrate the robustness and high discriminatory power of the algorithm.

We describe an approach to partition a video stream into structure regions that are temporally encoded and disjoint from texture regions, that are synthesized so as to preserve the statistical properties of the original data stream. Structures encode regions of an image that can be put into correspondence in different images of the same scene, and are encoded via a dictionary that takes into account spatial and temporal regularities. Textures are synthesized in a manner that preserves perceptual similarity.

A new method for capturing 3D video from a single imager and lens is introduced. The benefit of this method is that it does not have the calibration and alignment issues associated with binocular 3D video cameras. It also does not require special ranging transmitters and sensors. Because it is a single lens/imager system, it is also less expensive than either the binocular or ranging cameras. Our system outputs a 2D image and associated depth image using the combination of microfluidic lens and Depth from Defocus (DfD) algorithm. The lens is capable of changing the focus to obtain two images at the normal video frame rate. The Depth from Defocus algorithm uses the in focus and out of focus images to infer depth. We performed our experiments on synthetic and on the real aperture CMOS imager with a microfluidic lens. On synthetic images, we found an improvement in mean squared error compared to the literature on a limited test set. On camera images, our research showed that DfD combined with edge detection and segmentation provided subjective improvements in the resulting depth images.

We present a generalized approach to dynamically incorporate high level knowledge into a cooperative intelligent image analysis framework. We developed this framework in our laboratory to provide a uniform interface to develop intelligent image analysis tools as well as to provide infrastructure facilities required by these tools in order to work cooperatively for accomplishing complex image analysis task goals. This framework is able to automatically generate processing plans which accomplish user defined image analysis task goals. The approach that we propose in this paper provides a flexible interface to incorporate high level knowledge in image processing tools. We provide two ways to develop this knowledge: 1) by taking a feedback from an image processing expert about a processing plan generated by the system;and 2) by accepting a processing plan which accomplishes a particular task from an expert user. and then extracting the high level knowledge encapsulated in this plan. The generalized nature of our approach allows each individual tool to use machine learning algorithms of its own interest in improving the knowledge-base. Preliminary results that we obtained from this work demonstrates the success of our approach.

Physical models for color image formation provide constraints which are useful for interpreting 3D scenes. I summarize the physics underlying color image formation. Models for surface and body reflection from metals and dielectrics are analyzed in detail. This analysis allows us to evaluate the benefits we stand to gain by using color information in machine vision. I show from the reflection models that color allows the computation of image statistics which are independent of scene geometry. This principle has been used to develop an efficient algorithm for segmenting images of 3D scenes using normalized color. The algorithm applies to images of a wide range of materials and surface textures and is useful for a wide variety of machine vision tasks including 3D recognition and 3D inspection. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the scope of the models and the capabilities of the segmentation algorithm.

This paper presents a method for unsupervised segmentation of polarimetric SAR data into classes of homogeneous microwave backscatter characteristics. Clustering of polarimetric backscatter are obtained either by the CMF-NSO ( unsupervised fuzzy partition - optimal number of classes) or by SEM (Stochastic Estimation Maximization) algorithm. These algorithms carry out the classification without a priori assumptions on the number of classes in the data set. Assessment of cluster validity is based on performance measures using hypervolume V or CS function criteria. The later measures the overall average compactness and separation of a fuzzy-partition. The CMF-NSO algorithm performs well in situations of large variability of cluster shapes and densities. Given the clusters of polarimetric backscatter, the entire image is segmented using a MAP (Maximun A Posteriori) estimation. Implementation of the MAP technique is accomplished by an ICM (Iterative Conditional Modes) algorithm. Results, using fully polarimetric SAR forest data, obtained by the CMF-NSO following by the ICM algorithm with a K-distribution model are quite satisfactory.

This paper introduces a method for the automatic discrimination of digital images based on their semantic content. The proposed system allows to detect if a digital image contains or not a text. This is realized by a multi-steps procedure based on low-level features set properly derived. Our experiments show that the proposed algorithm is competitive in efficiency with classical techniques, and it has a lower complexity.

The main aim of this paper is to describe a method for locating a subimage of a stored image that approximately matches a given query image. This matching can support naive users in accessing an image database according to image contents rather symbolic attributes. The query image can be either composed using painting tools or cuts out of an actual scanned image. Our method is based on the extraction of features from the query image and from the stored images. The following three steps are involved: (1) an ISODATA algorithm is applied to segment (into region) both the query image and the stored images; (2) the normalized moment and geometrical features are computed from the segmented regions, and (3) a matching process is run on the resulting features to find those stored images which should be retrieved. The result is an ordered list of stored images or subimages from the database.

An algorithm for fmding characters from complicated document image is presented. We assume that all characters appear in strings which contain at least two characters. Characters overlapped by illustration characters touched by illustration or other characters and characters divided into fragments can be found. In the first step initial character probabilities are attached to pixels. In the second step they are updated by neighboring character probabilities by relaxation method. This algorithm is shown to be faster than the simple template matching algorithm for the typical document. An application to the system that automatically makes the data for electronic catalogue of automotive parts from immage is introduced.
