In biomedical images, structure of interest, particularly the soft tissue structures, such as the heart, airways, bronchial and arterial trees often have grey-scale and textural characteristics similar to other structures in the image, making it difficult to segment them using only gray- scale and texture information. However, these objects can be visually recognized by their unique shapes and sizes. In this paper we discuss, what we believe to be, a novel, simple scheme for extracting features based on regional shapes. To test the effectiveness of these features for image segmentation (classification), we use an artificial neural network and a statistical cluster analysis technique. The proposed shape-based feature extraction algorithm computes regional shape vectors (RSVs) for all pixels that meet a certain threshold criteria. The distance from each such pixel to a boundary is computed in 8 directions (or in 26 directions for a 3-D image). Together, these 8 (or 26) values represent the pixel's (or voxel's) RSV. All RSVs from an image are used to train a multi-layered perceptron neural network which uses these features to 'learn' a suitable classification strategy. To clearly distinguish the desired object from other objects within an image, several examples from inside and outside the desired object are used for training. Several examples are presented to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of our algorithm. Both synthetic and actual biomedical images are considered. Future extensions to this algorithm are also discussed.

Smart zooming refers to certain digital image processing algorithms that enable the examination of detail ordinarily obscured by pixelation effects. These algorithms use radial basis function interpolation to smooth image blockiness due, for example, to magnification by pixel replication. They may permit more smoothing flexibility while retaining more image detail than conventional convolution smoothing methods.

This paper deals with surface defect detection. The approach investigated here attempts to detect grey level as well as texture defects. The defects are regarded as being characterized by abrupt, local and unpredictable changes in an image. On the other hand, a defect-free surface is assumed to be regular and homogeneous, possibly with smooth and slow variation in its features. The detection is based on adaptive image modeling. It is shown that a classical autoregressive model is not really suitable for this detection problem. Then, two modified models are proposed. Their advantage lies in their taking into account the grey level value as well as the texture *** model adaptation can be stated as a joint optimization problem with constraint. Two different algorithms are defined and tested. The first algorithm performs the adaptation in a recursive way while enforcing the constraint at each step, whereas the second one imposes the constraint only at optimum. The performance of each algorithms is assessed with a statistical test using synthetic images. Finally, it is shown how this adaptive modeling technique can be applied to practical defect detection problems. Several cases are presented and discussed.

Surface mounted technology (SMT) in automated assembly facilities requires the use of automatic surface-mount-device (SMD) placement machines. One of the problems involved in the electronic printed circuit board (PCB) assembly process is the verification of the SMD placement operation within tight tolerances. The high throughput of modern manufacturing lines along with the required accuracy demand the use of automatic inspection systems to verify SMD placement. image complexity of the board makes the use of machine vision for the inspection process a difficult task. This is complicated by the fact that misclassification errors should be kept to a minimum. Additionally, it is desirable that the inspection results provide enough information to be used for statistical process control (SPC). The strategy adopted to solve this problem was to simplify the complexity of the image by means of special illumination devices. The simplified image was then suitable for analysis by simple processing, segmentation, and detection algorithms that, sequentially applied to the image, met the required repeatability and accuracy specifications for the inspection system. The scope of this paper is to describe the techniques explored by the authors to solve the SMD inspection problem in order to develop a working industrial SMD inspection system.

Line segmentation is the first and-the most critical pre-processing step for a document recognition/analysis task. Complex handwritten documents with lines running into each other impose a great challenge for the line segmentation problem due to the absence of online stroke information. This paper describes a method to disentangle lines running into each other, by splitting and associating the correct character strokes to the appropriate lines. The proposed method can be used along with the existing algorithm(1) that identifies such overlapping lines in documents. A stroke tracing method is used to intelligently segment the overlapping components. The method uses slope and curvature information of the stroke to disambiguate the course of the stroke at cross points. Once the overlapping components are segmented into-strokes, a statistical method is used to associate the strokes with appropriate lines.

In studying high efficiency color image coding and image processing, it is important to segment several regions that represent real objects. By performing this region segmentation, we can establish the structural description using the characteristic information of regions. To segment the image into several characteristic regions, we adopt the clustering algorithm in the Uniform Lightness Chromaticness Scale System and the merging process based on the measure of Godlove's color difference.

Radiologists perform a CT Angiography procedure to examine vascular structures and associated pathologies such as aneurysms. Volume rendering is used to exploit volumetric capabilities of CT that provides complete interactive 3-D visualization. However, bone forms an occluding structure and must be segmented out. The anatomical complexity of the head creates a major challenge in the segmentation of bone and vessel. An analysis of the head volume reveals varying spatial relationships between vessel and bone that can be separated into three sub-volumes: "proximal", "middle", and "distal". The "proximal" and "distal" sub-volumes contain good spatial separation between bone and vessel (carotid referenced here). Bone and vessel appear contiguous in the "middle" partition that remains the most challenging region for segmentation. The partition algorithm is used to automatically identify these partition locations so that different segmentation methods can be developed for each sub-volume. The partition locations are computed using bone, image entropy. and sinus profiles along with a rule-based method. The algorithm is validated on 21 cases (varying volume sizes, resolution, clinical sites, pathologies) using ground truth identified visually. The algorithm is also computationally efficient, processing a 500+ slice volume in 6 seconds (an impressive 0.01 seconds/slice) that makes it an attractive algorithm for pre-processing large volumes. The partition algorithm is integrated into the segmentation workflow. Fast and simple algorithms are implemented for processing the "proximal" and "distal" partitions. Complex methods are restricted to only the "middle" partition. The partition-enabled segmentation has been successfully tested and results are shown from multiple cases.

Watershed transformation is used in morphological image segmentation. This transformation could be considered as a topographic region growing method. Recently, fast watershed algorithms have been proposed for general purpose computers. They are based on immersion simulations of the image surface, which is considered as a topographic relief. In such a model, the greylevel values of pixels stand for altitude values on the relief. In this paper, the operation of the present fast watershed algorithms is analyzed and a new extension is proposed. Drawbacks of the present algorithms are pointed out, studied, and illustrated with test images. These problems lead, in several cases, to a loss of information about image details and structures or even to unprocessed areas in the image. The new watershed algorithm overcomes these deficiencies and preserves more information about image details. The new algorithm is based on a split-and-merge scheme. It constantly monitors the presence of isolated areas during the immersion simulation, considering them as new catchment basins. Application of the split-and-merge watershed algorithm to marker-based image segmentation is discussed.

Object based coding is a new technique which is being investigated to achieve high compression ratios for video sequences. The classical approach to video coding is a four-step algorithm: segmentation, motion estimation and compensation, coding of the segmentation information and finally coding of the prediction errors. In order to reduce the number of bits needed for coding the objects, we propose another approach where we try to combine the first three steps: do the motion estimation and segmentation together and at the same time collect important information for the coding of the segmentation information.

Metal-on-metal (MoM) hip arthroplasties have been utilised over the last 15 years to restore hip function for 1.5 million patients worldwide. Althoug widely used, this hip arthroplasty releases metal wear debris which lead to muscle atrophy. The degree of muscle wastage differs across patients ranging from mild to severe. The longterm outcomes for patients with MoM hip arthroplasty are reduced for increasing degrees of muscle atrophy, highlighting the need to automatically segment pathological muscles. The automated segmentation of pathological soft tissues is challenging as these lack distinct boundaries and morphologically differ across subjects. As a result, there is no method reported in the literature which has been successfully applied to automatically segment pathological muscles. We propose the first automated framework to delineate severely atrophied muscles by applying a novel automated segmentation propagation framework to patients with MoM hip arthroplasty. The proposed algorithm was used to automatically quantify muscle wastage in these patients.
