In 2002. at this meeting, we presented a framework for the evaluation of image segmentation methods. That framework suggested the consideration of both recognition and delineation tasks and described three groups of factors under precision, accuracy, and efficiency for evaluating segmentation methods. In this paper, focusing on accuracy, we argue that evaluations conducted on particular manifestations of any segmentation method M (as determined by fixed values of the parameters of M) do not characterize the range of behavior of M. To capture the entire range of behavior of M for a given application domain, we describe a method called Delineation Operating Characteristic (DOC) analysis. The DOC curve summarizes the behavior of M and the tradeoff that is inherent in M between false positive and false negative regions within the regions delineated by M. This, we argue, will allow more complete understanding and more meaningful comparison of the relative accuracy of different methods. This analysis may also allow the selection of more optimal manifestations of M for a given application domain. By way of illustration, we demonstrate with examples how DOC curves can be used for comparing the accuracy of several segmentation methods.

A region-based multi-criterion segmentation algorithm for image sequence coding is described in this paper. It is based on morphological segmentation, motion estimation, and compensation techniques. The concept of multi-criterion is introduced in the traditional gray-level segmentation process, which takes into account the high temporal redundancy. The current image is segmented into two different kinds of regions: homogeneous gray-level regions coded by texture modeling method or homogeneous motion regions represented by motion compensation. No prediction error needs to be transmitted. Contours are simplified by a new non-linear filter. Preliminary experimental results have demonstrated high potential performance, with the combination of the power of contour-texture approach and that of the motion compensation technique, for very low bitrate image sequence coding.

Document structure analysis can be regarded as a syntactic analysis problem. The order and containment relations among the physical or logical components of a document page can be described by an ordered tree structure and can be modeled by a tree grammar which describes the page at the component level in terms of regions or blocks. This paper provides a detailed survey of past work on document structure analysis algorithms and summarize the limitations of past approaches. In particular, we survey past work on document physical layout representations and algorithms, document logical structure representations and algorithms, and performance evaluation of document structure analysis algorithms. In the last section, we summarize this work and point out its limitations.

A Contrast and Attenuation-map (CT-number) Linearity Improvement (CALI) framework is proposed for cone-beam CT (CBCT) images used for brain stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). The proposed framework is used together with our high spatial resolution iterative reconstruction algorithm and is tailored for the Leksell Gamma Knife ICON (Elekta, Stockholm, Sweden). The incorporated CBCT system in ICON facilitates frameless SRS planning and treatment delivery. The ICON employs a half-cone geometry to accommodate the existing treatment couch. This geometry increases the amount of artifacts and together with other physical imperfections causes image inhomogeneity and contrast reduction. Our proposed framework includes a preprocessing step, involving a shading and beam-hardening artifact correction, and a post-processing step to correct the dome/capping artifact caused by the spatial variations in x-ray energy generated by bowtie-filter. Our shading correction algorithm relies solely on the acquired projection images (i.e. no prior information required) and utilizes filtered-back-projection (FBP) reconstructed images to generate a segmented bone and soft-tissue map. Ideal projections are estimated from the segmented images and a smoothed version of the difference between the ideal and measured projections is used in correction. The proposed beam-hardening and dome artifact corrections are segmentation free. The CALI was tested on CatPhan, as well as patient images acquired on the ICON system. The resulting clinical brain images show substantial improvements in soft contrast visibility, revealing structures such as ventricles and lesions which were otherwise un-detectable in FBP-reconstructed images. The linearity of the reconstructed attenuation-map was also improved, resulting in more accurate CT#.

This paper describes an efficient method of segmenting cell nuclei from complex scenes based upon the use of adaptive region growing in conjuction with nucleus-specific filters. Results of segmenting potentially abnormal (cancer or neoplastic) cell nuclei in Papanicolaou smears from 0.8 square micrometers resolution images are also presented.

The evolutionary theory of color perception is described. It is based on three main propositions: 1) The physical nature of light and the environmental distributions of its information carrying parameters, 2) Constraints implied by the available biological material and physiological processes, and 3) The evolutionary tendency toward optimal usefulness for the survival of the species. The theory leads directly to the main properties of color perception: a) Newtonian color circle, metamers, additive and subtructive color mixtures, b) Adaptive (relativistic) transformations and color constancy (invariance), c) An operational procedure of color measurements. Among the major predictions are Lorentz type formulas for color transformations, and the explanation of two-color projections. Predictions based on color transformations will be demonstrated with a simple demonstration kit.

Prostate segmentation in computed tomography (CT) images is useful for planning and guidance of the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. However, the low soft-tissue contrast of CT images makes the manual prostate segmentation a time-consuming task with high inter-observer variation. We developed a semi-automatic, three-dimensional (3D) prostate segmentation algorithm using shape and texture analysis and have evaluated the method against manual reference segmentations. In a training data set we defined an inter-subject correspondence between surface points in the spherical coordinate system. We applied this correspondence to model the globular and smoothly curved shape of the prostate with 86, well-distributed surface points using a point distribution model that captures prostate shape variation. We also studied the local texture difference between prostate and non-prostate tissues close to the prostate surface. For segmentation, we used the learned shape and texture characteristics of the prostate in CT images and we used a set of user inputs for prostate localization. We trained our algorithm using 23 CT images and tested it on 10 images. We evaluated the results compared with those of two experts' manual reference segmentations using different error metrics. The average measured Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and mean absolute distance (MAD) were 88 +/- 2% and 1.9 +/- 0.5 mm, respectively. The averaged inter-expert difference measured on the same dataset was 91 +/- 4% (DSC) and 1.3 +/- 0.6 mm (MAD). With no prior intra-patient information, the proposed algorithm showed a fast, robust and accurate performance for 3D CT segmentation.

This paper proposes a novel algorithm for the real-time detection and correction of occlusion and split in feature-based tracking of objects for surveillance applications. The proposed algorithm detects sudden variations of spatio-temporal features of objects in order to identify possible occlusion or split events. The detection is followed by a validation stage that uses past tracking information to prevent false detection of occlusion or split. Special care is taken in case of heavy occlusion, when there is a large superposition of objects. In this case the system relies on long-term 'temporal behavior of objects to avoid updating the video object features with unreliable (e.g. shape and motion) information. Occlusion is corrected by separating occluded objects. For the detection of splits, in addition to the analysis of spatio-temporal changes in objects features, our algorithm analyzes the temporal behavior of split objects to discriminate between errors in segmentation and real separation of objects, such as in the deposit of an object. Split is corrected by physically merging the objects detected to be split. To validate the proposed approach, objective and visual results are presented. Experimental results show the ability of the proposed algorithm to detect and correct, both, split and occlusion of objects. The proposed algorithm is most suitable in video surveillance applications due to: its good performance in multiple, heavy, and total occlusion;its distinction between real object separation and faulty object split;its handling of simultaneous occlusion and split events;and its low computational complexity.

The identification and measurement of buildings in imagery is important to a number of applications including cartography, modeling and simulation, and weapon targeting. Extracting large numbers of buildings manually can be time-consuming and expensive, so the automation of the process is highly desirable. This paper describes and demonstrates such an automated process for extracting rectilinear buildings from stereo imagery. The first step is the generation of a dense elevation matrix registered to the imagery. In the examples shown, this was accomplished using Global Minimum Residual Matching (GMRM). GMRM automatically removes gamma-parallax from the stereo imagery and produces a dense matrix of x-parallax values which are proportional to the local elevation, and, of course, registered to the imagery. The second step is to form a joint probability distribution of the image say levels and the corresponding height values from the elevation matrix. Based on the peaks of that distribution, the area of interest is segmented into feature and non-feature areas. The feature areas are further refined using length, width and height constraints to yield promising building hypotheses with their corresponding vertices. The gray shade image is used in the third step to verify the hypotheses and to determine precise edge locations corresponding to the approximate vertices and satisfying appropriate orthogonality constraints. Examples of successful application of this process to imagery are presented, and extensions involving the use of dense elevation matrices from other sources are possible.
