Neural network architectures have been proposed as new computer architectures and a Hopfield neural network has been shown to find good solutions very fast in solving complex optimization problems. It should be noted, however, that a Hopfield neural network with fixed neural gains only guarantees to find local optimum solutions, not the global optimum solution. image segmentation, like other engineering problems, can be formalized as an optimization problem and implemented using neural network architectures if an appropriate optimization function is defined. To achieve a good image segmentation, the global or the nearly global optimum solutions of the appropriate optimization function need to be found. In this paper, we propose a new neural network architecture for image segmentation, `an annealed Hopfield neural network,' which incorporates an annealing schedule for the neural gains. We implemented image segmentation using this annealed Hopfield neural network with an optimization function proposed by Blake and Zisserman and achieved good image segmentation in detecting horizontal and vertical boundaries. Later, we proposed an extended optimization function to achieve better performance on detecting sharp corners and diagonally oriented boundaries. Finally, simulation results on synthetic and real images are shown and compared with general-purpose mean field annealing technique.

A corner detection scheme for chain coded curves is proposed that significantly improves on the performance of current algorithms. The proposed scheme measures the number of links to either side of a point that can produce the largest digital straight line. That value is used as an indication of curvature at that point with very high curvature being indicative of a corner. A modification of the proposed algorithm can further reduce the false detection rate with virtually no affect on the number of corners missed by omitting certain patterns that can arise from contours with arbitrarily small curvature.

As part of research into document image processing, an algorithm has been developed to detect the degree of skew in a scanned binary image. The principal components of the algorithm are component labelling, a procedure to reduce the amount of data to be processed, a technique to minimize the effect of non-textual data (graphics, forms, line art, large fonts, and dithered images) on the measurement of skew angle, and the Hough transform. The performance of the algorithm has been evaluated using a sample size of several hundred images of medical journal pages. Evaluation shows that a skew angle may be detected with an accuracy of about 0.50 degree.

In this paper we present a novel technique for rapidly partitioning surfaces in range images into planar patches. Essential for our segmentation method is the observation that in a scan line the points belonging to a planar surface form a straight line segment. Based on this observation, we first divide each scan line into straight line segments and subsequently consider only the set of line segments of all scan lines as segmentation primitives. The principle of our segmentation method is region growing in terms of line segments. We use a noise variance estimation to automatically set thresholds so that the algorithm can adapt to the noise conditions of different range images. The proposed algorithm has been tested on a large number of real range images acquired by two different range sensors. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is fast and robust.

A common challenge in many image analysis applications is the segmentation of the data into objects of interest (foreground) and background. Typically, the contrast of the data and the background greylevel varies across the image, thereby requiring some form of normalization prior to a threshold step. Previous morphological techniques for data normalization have been quite successful. These approaches include the `rolling ball' of Sternberg and the `top hat' of Serra. These techniques are particularly effective for patterns of interest that are spaced relatively far apart compared to their width. In contrast, the algorithm introduced in this paper is applicable to closely spaced thin broken lines on a highly variable background. Using a combination of greyscale morphology and conditional masking of image data, the approach is shown to be highly robust for closely spaced foreground/background patterns.

In this paper, different methods are presented for the detection of important directions on thermal infrared images. These methods are compared to the well-known Hough method which performs poorly for these types of images. These algorithms are especially designed for an automatic target recognition system, but could as well be used for other types of application.

Lowe demonstrated a method for automatically segmenting and smoothing image curves by varying degrees. It was intended to remove noise and unnecessary fine detail, aiding subsequent processing such as grouping and matching. An alternative technique is described in this paper that is based on recursively subdividing the curve into alternative sets of sections. Rather than use thresholds on the values of curvature and its derivatives to determine the segmentation and degree of smoothing our technique is driven by three qualitative measures: (1) a criterion for selecting potential breakpoints, (2) a criterion for determining the amount of smoothing for curve sections, and (3) a significance measure that determines which sections form the best selection. The advantages of the technique are robustness, scale invariance, and the absence of parameters.

The objective of the paper is to present a new object based image coding technique using morphological segmentation. These are the first results of a final objective of proposing a completely new coding/decoding scheme for storage and transmission applications based on Mathematical Morphology. The paper presents a new object based image coding algorithm that involves three main processing steps: segmentation, coding of contours and coding of the inside. The three fundamental coding steps of our approach work on a multiscale representation of the data. The coding of contours represents the shape and location of the region and is based on techniques relying on chain codes. The coding of inside consists in modeling the gray level function of the image and in filling each region with this model. Orthogonal polynomials are used for inside coding and bit allocation techniques are developed such that efficient compression rates are obtained. Several computer generated images are presented that show good visual results for a variety of different compression ratios. The techniques can also be applied to image sequences. Current research is under way to propose new coding techniques for both the contour and the inside coding using Mathematical Morphology.

A high-speed algorithm for extracting line segment features in an image is described. The extracted line segments are used as the geometric features for identifying and locating objects of interest, specifically in a Model Based Vision system. The algorithm is divided into two parts with each part being performed using separate computer hardware. The first part of the algorithm involves locating pixels in an image which correspond to edges. This part of the algorithm was implemented on the Datacube MaxVideo-20 pipelined image processing hardware executing in real time. The second part of the algorithm involves the extraction of the edge pixels in a connected manner so that line segments can be identified. This part of the algorithm was implemented in software on a Sun Sparc 2 workstation using a run-length encoded image and a chain-code mapped image generated by the Datacube MaxVideo-20 hardware.

Accurate quantitative measurements of airway and vascular dimensions are essential to evaluate function in the normal and diseased lung. In this report, a novel method is described for three-dimensional extraction and analysis of pulmonary tree structures using data from High Resolution Computed Tomography (HRCT). Serially scanned two-dimensional slices of the lower left lobe of isolated dog lungs were stacked to create a volume of data. Airway and vascular trees were three-dimensionally extracted using a three dimensional seeded region growing algorithm based on difference in CT number between wall and lumen. To obtain quantitative data, we reduced each tree to its central axis. From the central axis, branch length is measured as the distance between two successive branch points, branch angle is measured as the angle produced by two daughter branches, and cross sectional area is measured from a plane perpendicular to the central axis point. Data derived from these methods can be used to localize and quantify structural differences both during changing physiologic conditions and in pathologic lungs.
