In this paper, we introduce an extension to 2-D case of Mallat's algorithm called 'Matching Pursuit'. This algorithm decomposes the image into a linear expansion of waveforms that belong to a redundant dictionary of functions. Using Gabor's space-frequency atoms and a test on the residual image norm, an image compression rate of 31.59 is also reached and a segmentation approach could be realized.

Determining the spatial image resolution required to perform automated target recognition (ATR) can provide crucial information to designers of sensors and systems employing ATR technology. We present an analytic framework for performing this determination based on a functional decomposition of the algorithmic portion of an ATR system. The effects of changes in resolution in each component are taken into consideration separately, then combined to provide a hierarchical description of the required spatial resolution.

The purpose of this study is to use modern image segmentation techniques to quantitate cyst area and number within a complete CT examination of the lungs. Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) was chosen because this disease produces many well defined thin- walled cysts of varying sizes throughout the lungs that provide a good test for 2D image segmentation techniques, which are used to separate LAM cysts from the normal lung tissue. Quantitative measures of the lung, such as cyst area versus frequency, are then automatically extracted. Three women with LAM were examined using CT slices obtained at 20 mm intervals, with 1 to 1.5 mm collimation, and a pixel size of 0.4 - 0.5 mm. Our segmentation algorithm operates in several stages. First, masks for each lung are automatically generated, thus allowing only lung pixels to be considered for the cyst segmentation. Next, we threshold the data under the masks at a level of -900 Hounsfield units. The threshold segments LAM cysts from normal lung tissue and other structures, such as pulmonary veins and arteries. In order to determine the size of individual cysts, we grow all regions having brightness values lower than the threshold within the masked regions. These regions, which correspond to cysts, are then sorted by size, and a cyst histogram for each patient is computed.

We propose a collection of robust algorithms for the segmentation of cell images from Papanicolaou stained cervical smears ("Pap" smears). This problem is deceptively difficult and often results on laboratory datasets do not carry over to real world data. Our approach is in 3 parts. First, we segment the cytoplasm from the background using a,novel method based on the Wilson and Spann multi-resolution framework. Second, we segment the nucleus from the cytoplasm using an active contour method, where the best contour is found by a global minimisation method. Third, we implement a method to determine a confidence measure for the segmentation of each object. This uses a stability criterion over the regularisation parameter lambda in the active contour. We present the results of thorough testing of the algorithms on large numbers of cell images. A database of 20,130 images is used for the segmentation tests and 18,718 images for the robustness tests.

A clinical instrument called a "Nevoscope" is used to image skin-lesions. The lesion is transilluminated by a fiber-optic annular ring light source that directs light into the skin area surrounding the lesion and thus forming a virtual source just beneath the lesion. Mirrors uniformly spaced around the lesion and tilted at various angles, provide orthographic projections of the skin lesion. Additional views are obtained by rotating the mirror assembly. These multiple views are used in a direct 3-D reconstruction of the lesion to estimate its depth of penetration. A pigment pattern analysis is performed on the direct view. This includes both color and texture segmentation. In this paper, we present preliminary results of our 3-D reconstruction and pigment pattern analyses of some lesions.

Accurate quantitative measurements of airway and vascular dimensions are essential to evaluate function in the normal and diseased lung. In this report, a novel method is described for three-dimensional extraction and analysis of pulmonary tree structures using data from High Resolution Computed Tomography (HRCT). Serially scanned two-dimensional slices of the lower left lobe of isolated dog lungs were stacked to create a volume of data. Airway and vascular trees were three-dimensionally extracted using a three dimensional seeded region growing algorithm based on difference in CT number between wall and lumen. To obtain quantitative data, we reduced each tree to its central axis. From the central axis, branch length is measured as the distance between two successive branch points, branch angle is measured as the angle produced by two daughter branches, and cross sectional area is measured from a plane perpendicular to the central axis point. Data derived from these methods can be used to localize and quantify structural differences both during changing physiologic conditions and in pathologic lungs.

In the current vast image segmentation literature, there is a serious lack of methods that would allow theoretical comparison of the algorithms introduced by using different mathematical methodologies. The main goal of this article is to introduce a general theoretical framework for image segmentation that would allow such comparison. The framework is based on the formal definitions designed to answer the following fundamental questions: What is the relation between an idealized image and its digital representation? What properties a segmentation algorithm must satisfy to be acknowledged as acceptable? What does it mean that a digital image segmentation algorithm truly approximates an idealized segmentation model? We use the formulated framework to analyze the front propagation (FP) level set algorithm of Malladi, Sethian, and Vemuri and compare it with the fuzzy connectedness family of algorithms. In particular, we prove that the FP algorithm is weakly model-equivalent with the absolute fuzzy connectedness algorithm of Udupa and Samarasekera used with gradient based affinity. Experimental evidence of this equivalence is also provided. The presented theoretical framework can be used to analyze any arbitrary segmentation algorithm. This line of investigation is a subject of our forthcoming work.

In this paper we present a new algorithm for segmenting SAR images. A common problem with segmentation algorithms for SAR imagery is the poor placement of the edges of regions and hence of the regions themselves. This usually arises because the algorithm considers only a limited number of placements for regions. The new algorithm circumvents this shortcoming, and produces an optimal segmentation into a prescribed number of regions. An objective function is derived from a statistical model of SAR imagery. This objective function is then minimised by the method of simulated annealing which is, assuming some weak constraints, guaranteed to give the global minimum. Starting with an initial segmentation, the algorithm proceeds by randomly changing the current state. The annealing then decides whether or not to accept the new configuration by calculating the difference between the likelihoods of the data fitting these segmentations. In practise there are many possible implementations of the algorithm. We describe an implementation which uses a free topological model and alters the segmentation on a pixel by pixel basis. This makes it possible to get results of high resolution, as shown in results obtained by applying the new algorithm to both airborne X-band and ERS1 imagery.

The goal of this paper is a theoretical and experimental comparison of two popular image segmentation algorithms: fuzzy connectedness (FC) and graph cut (GC). On the theoretical side, our emphasis will be on describing a common framework in which both of these methods can be expressed. We will give a full analysis of the framework and describe precisely a place which each of the two methods occupies in it. Within the same framework, other region based segmentation methods, like watershed, can also be expressed. We will also discuss in detail the relationship between FC segmentations obtained via image forest transform (IFT) algorithms, as opposed to FC segmentations obtained by other standard versions of FC algorithms. We also present an experimental comparison of the performance of FC and GC algorithms. This concentrates on comparing the actual (as opposed to provable worst scenario) algorithms' running time, as well as influence of the choice of the seeds on the output.
