We present a framework for multi-atlas based segmentation in situations where we have a small number of segmented atlas images, but a large database of unlabeled images is also available. The novelty lies in the application of graph-based registration on a manifold to the problem of multi-atlas registration. The approach is to place all the images in a learned manifold space and construct a graph connecting near neighbors. Atlases are selected for any new image to be segmented based on the shortest path length along the manifold graph. A multi-scale non-rigid registration takes place via each of the nodes on the graph. The expectation is that by registering via similar images, the likelihood of misregistrations is reduced. Having registered multiple atlases via the graph, patch-based voxel weighted voting takes place to provide the final segmentation. We apply this approach to a set of T2 MRI images of the prostate, which is a notoriously difficult segmentation task. On a set of 25 atlas images and 85 images overall, we see that registration via the manifold graph improves the Dice coefficient from 0.82 +/- 0.05 to 0.86 +/- 0.03 and the average symmetrical boundary distance from 2.89 +/- 0.62 mm to 2.47 +/- 0.51 mm. This is a modest but potentially useful improvement in a difficult set of images. It is expected that our approach will provide similar improvement to any multi-atlas segmentation task where a large number of unsegmented images are available.

An algorithm is proposed to estimate the general motion of multiple moving objects in an image sequence. The general motion is described by a general motion model which is specified by number of parameters called motion parameters. By estimating the individual motion of the objects, segmentation according to motion is achieved at the same time. The algorithm works directly on an image sequence without using any higher level information such as corners and edges. Furthermore, it is not necessary to go through the estimation of optical flow as an intermediate step, avoiding the error caused by estimating optical flow.

Ovarian masses are categorised into different types of malignant and benign. In order to optimize patient treatment, it is necessary to carry out pre-operational characterisation of the suspect ovarian mass to determine its category. Ultrasound imaging has been widely used in differentiating malignant from benign cases due to its safe and non-intrusive nature, and can be used for determining the number of cysts in the ovary. Presently, the gynaecologist is tasked with manually counting the number of cysts shown on the ultrasound image. This paper proposes, a new approach that automatically segments the ovarian masses and cysts from a static B-mode image. Initially, the method uses a trainable segmentation procedure and a trained neural network classifier to accurately identify the position of the masses and cysts. After that, the borders of the masses can be appraised using watershed transform. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been tested by comparing the number of cysts identified by the method against the manual examination by a gynaecologist. A total of 65 ultrasound images were used for the comparison, and the results showed that the proposed solution is a viable alternative to the manual counting method for accurately determining the number of cysts in a US ovarian image.

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging (MRSI) is a promising and developing tool in medical imaging. Because of various difficulties imposed by the imperfections of the scanner and the reconstruction algorithms, its applicability in clinical practice is rather limited. In this paper, we suggest an extension of the constrained reconstruction technique (SLIM). Our algorithm, named B-SLIM, takes into account the the measured field inhomogeneity map, which contains both the scanner's main field inhomogeneity and the object-dependent magnetic susceptibility effects. The method is implemented and tested both with synthetic and physical two-compartment phantom data. The results demonstrate significant performance improvement over the SLIM technique. At the same time, the algorithm has the same computational complexity as SLIM.

This paper mainly addresses the problem of the automatic segmentation of X-ray image which is applied in Non-destructive inspection on weld defects and proposes a new automatic segmentation method which does not use the histogram but the statistics of the image. A mathematical model and an implementation algorithm are proposed and discussed, and several experimental results (photographs) have been given out to show the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Detection of road lane markings is attractive for practical applications such as advanced driver assistance systems and road maintenance. This paper proposes a system to detect and recognize road lane markings in panoramic images. The system can be divided into four stages. First, an inverse perspective mapping is applied to the original panoramic image to generate a top-view road view, in which the potential road markings are segmented based on their intensity difference compared to the surrounding pixels. Second, a feature vector of each potential road marking segment is extracted by calculating the Euclidean distance between the center and the boundary at regular angular steps. Third, the shape of each segment is classified using a Support Vector Machine (SVM). Finally, by modeling the lane markings, previous falsely detected segments can be rejected based on their orientation and position relative to the lane markings. Our experiments show that the system is promising and is capable of recognizing 93%, 95% and 91% of striped line segments, blocks and arrows respectively, as well as 94% of the lane markings.

Radar-based sensing emerges as a promising alternative to cameras and wearable devices for indoor human activity recognition. Unlike wearables, radar sensors offer non-contact and unobtrusive monitoring, while being insensitive to lighting conditions and preserving privacy as compared to cameras. This paper addresses the task of continuous and sequential classification of daily life activities, unlike the problem to isolate distinct motions in isolation. Upon acquiring raw radar data containing sequences of motions, an event detection algorithm, the Short-Time-Average/Long-Time-Average (STA/LTA) algorithm, is utilized to detect individual motion segments. By recognizing breaks between transitions from one motion type to another, the STA/LTA detector isolates individual activity segments. To ensure consistent input shapes for activities of varying durations, image resizing and cropping techniques are employed. Furthermore, data augmentation techniques are applied to modify micro-Doppler signatures, enhancing the classification system's robustness and providing additional data for training.

A tree-structured wavelet transform has been developed for texture classification in our previous work. The new transform, which offers a non-redundant representation, is able to zoom into dominant frequency channels containing significant information of textures and can be interpreted as the decomposition of a 2-D function with the wavelet packet basis. In this research, we extend our work to the texture segmentation problem. A new multiscale texture segmentation algorithm based on the tree-structured wavelet transform and hierarchical fuzzy clustering technique is proposed. Numerical experiments are given to demonstrate the performance of our new algorithm.

This paper describes the Bayesian image reconstruction algorithm with entropy prior with space variant hyperparameter. The spatial variation of the hyperparameter allows different degrees of resolution in areas of high and low signal/noise ratio, thus avoiding the large residuals present in algorithms that use a constant balancing parameter. The space variant hyperparameter determines the relative weight between the prior information and the likelihood defining the degree of smoothness of the solution. To compute the variable hyperparameter we used a segmentation technique based on artificial neural networks of the Self- Organizing Map type. Using this technique we segmented the image in 25 regions and computed a different value of the hyperparameter for each one. We applied the method to the Hubble Space Telescope Cameras and to ground based CCD data.
