image segmentation transforms pixel-level information from raw images to a higher level of abstraction in which related pixels are grouped into disjoint spatial regions. Such regions typically correspond to natural or man-made objects or structures, natural variations in land cover, etc. For many image interpretation tasks (such as land use assessment, automatic target cueing, defining relationships between objects, etc.), segmentation can be an important early step. Remotely sensed images (e.g., multi-spectral and hyperspectral images) often contain many spectral bands (i.e., multiple layers of 2D images). Multi-band images are important because they contain more information than single-band images. Objects or natural variations that are readily apparent in certain spectral bands may be invisible in 2D broadband images. In this paper, the classical region growing approach to image segmentation is generalized from single to multi-band images. While it is widely recognized that the quality of image segmentation is affected by which segmentation algorithm is used, this paper shows that algorithm parameter values can have an even more profound effect. A novel self-calibration framework is developed for automatically selecting parameter values that produce segmentations that most closely resemble a calibration edge map (derived separately using a simple edge detector). Although the framework is generic in the sense that it can imbed any core segmentation algorithm, this paper only demonstrates self-calibration with multi-band region growing. The framework is applied to a variety of AVIRIS image blocks at different spectral resolutions, in an effort to assess the impact of spectral resolution on segmentation quality. The image segmentations are assessed quantitatively, and it is shown that segmentation quality does not generally appear to be highly correlated with spectral resolution.

When mixed mail enters a postal facility, it must first be faced and oriented so that the address is readable by automated mail processing machinery. Existing US Postal Service (USPS) automated systems face and orient domestic mail by searching for fluorescing stamps on each mail piece. However, misplaced or partially fluorescing postage causes a significant fraction of mail to be rejected. Previously, rejected mail had to be faced and oriented by hand, thus increasing mail processing cost and time. Our earlier work successfully demonstrated the utility of machine-vision-based extraction of postal delimiters-such as cancellation marks and barcodes-for camera-based mail facing and orientation. Arguably, of all the localized information sources on the envelope image, the destination address block is the richest in content and the most structured in its form and layout. This paper focuses exclusively on the destination address block image and describes new vision-based features that can be extracted and used for mail orientation. Our results on real USPS datasets indicate robust performance. The algorithms described herein will be deployed nationwide on USPS hardware in the near future.

Brain surfaces provide a reliable representation for cortical mapping. The construction of correct surfaces from magnetic resonance images (MRI) segmentation is a challenging task, especially when genus zero surfaces are required for further processing such as parameterization, partial inflation and registration. The generation of such surfaces has been approached either by correcting a binary image as part of the segmentation pipeline or by modifying the mesh representing the surface. During this task, the preservation of the structure may be compromised because of the convoluted nature of the brain and noisy/imperfect segmentations. In this paper, we propose a combined, voxel and surface-based, topology correction method which preserves the structure of the brain while yielding genus zero surfaces. The topology of the binary segmentation is first corrected using a set of topology preserving operators applied sequentially. This results in a white matter/gray matter binary set with correct sulci delineation, homotopic to a filled sphere. Using the corrected segmentation, a marching cubes mesh is then generated and the tunnels and handles resulting from the meshing are finally removed with an algorithm based on the detection of non-separating loops. The approach was validated using 20 young individuals MRI from the OASIS database, acquired at two different time-points. Reproducibility and robustness were evaluated using global and local criteria such as surface area, curvature and point to point distance. Results demonstrated the method capability to produce genus zero meshes while preserving geometry, two fundamental properties for reliable and accurate cortical mapping and further clinical studies.

To reach higher compression ratios in video sequence coding the demands posed on the motion estimation module become greater and greater. In this paper we present a motion estimation scheme which gives a motion field defined on every block (typical 8 by 8 or 16 by 16) and resembles very well the real motion in the scene. In more complex coding schemes constraints were added to obtain better visual quality. The proposed algorithm is a `one-pass' algorithm and is not explicitly based on any statistical model. A classification procedure on a predefined number of motion vector candidates defines the final motion field. An overview is given of the concept of using global information to calculate the motion vector field. A thorough description of the new algorithm is given and some simulation results are presented on real sequences. Further research on this algorithm will be done to use it in a segmentation based codec for complex scenes.

Linear features from airport images correspond to runways, taxiways and roads. Detecting runways helps pilots to focus on runway incursions in poor visibility conditions. In this work, we attempt to detect linear features from LiDAR swath in near real time using parallel implementation on G5-based apple cluster called Xseed. Data from LiDAR swath is converted into a uniform grid with nearest neighbor interpolation. The edges and gradient directions are computed using standard edge detection algorithms such as Canny's detector. Edge linking and detecting straight-line features are described. Preliminary results on Reno, Nevada airport data are included.

In this paper, we propose to use 4D graph cuts for the segmentation of large spatio-temporal (4D) datasets. Indeed, as 4D datasets grow in popularity in many clinical areas, so will the demand for efficient general segmentation algorithms. The graph cuts method(1) has become a leading method for complex 2D and 3D image segmentation in many applications. Despite a few attempts(2-5) in 4D, the use of graph cuts on typical medical volume quickly exceeds today's computer capacities. Among all existing graph cuts based methods(6-10) the multilevel banded graph cuts(9) is the fastest and uses the least amount of memory. Nevertheless, this method has its limitation. Memory becomes an issue when using large 4D volume sequences, and small structures become hardly recoverable when using narrow bands. We thus improve the boundary refinement efficiency by using a 4D competitive region growing. First, we construct a coarse graph at a low resolution with strong temporal links to prevent the shrink bias inherent to the graph cuts method. Second, we use a competitive region growing using a priority queue to capture all fine details. Leaks are prevented by constraining the competitive region growing within a banded region and by adding a viscosity term. This strategy yields results comparable to the multilevel banded graph cuts but is faster and allows its application to large 4D datasets. We applied our method on both cardiac 4D MRI and 4D CT datasets with promising results.

Some of the recently developed image reconstruction algorithms for cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) involve the. computation of the finite Hilbert transform. We have previously studied noise property of the finite Hilbert transform and observed that it can be used for potentially improving the image noise property within a region of interest (ROI) in IGRT. Imaging radiation dose is one of the critical issues in IGRT, and in addition to existing dose-reduction schemes by use of ROI imaging, it is possible to achieve further patient dose reduction through modulating beam intensity so-that a sub-ROI in the ROI be exposed by high flux of x-ray photons and the rest of the ROI be exposed by low flux of them. In this work, we investigate the technique for obtaining sub-ROI images, which is supposed to include the target under treatment, with high contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and the images within the rest of the ROI with low CNR. Numerical studies have been conducted as a preliminary in this work.

In this paper we introduce a new algorithm for segmentation of medical images of any dimension. The segmentation is based on geometric methods and multiscale analysis. A sequence of increasingly blurred images is created by Gaussian blurring. Each blurred image is segmented by locating its ridges, decomposing the ridges into curvilinear segments and assigning a unique label to each, and constructing a region for each ridge segment based on a flow model which uses vector fields naturally associated with the ridge finding. The regions from the initial image are leaf nodes in a tree. The regions from the blurred images are interior nodes of the tree. Arcs of the tree are constructed based on how regions at one scale merge via blurring into regions at the next scale. Objects in the image are represented by unions and differences of subtrees of the full tree. The tree is used as input to a visualization program which allows the user to interactively explore the hierarchy and define objects. Some results are provided for a 3D magnetic resonance image of a head.

We have implemented a prototype system consisting of a Java-based image viewer and a web server extension component for transmitting Magnetic Resonance images (MRI) to an image viewer, to test the performance of different image retrieval techniques. We used full-resolution images, and images compressed/decompressed using the Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT) image compression algorithm. We examined the SPIHT decompression algorithm using both non-progressive and progressive transmission, focussing on the running times of the algorithm, client memory usage and garbage collection. We also compared the Java implementation with a native C++ implementation of the non-progressive SPIHT decompression variant. Our performance measurements showed that for uncompressed image retrieval using a 10Mbps Ethernet, a film of 16 MR images can be retrieved and displayed almost within interactive times. The native C++ code implementation of the client-side decoder is twice as fast as the Java decoder. If the network bandwidth is low, the high communication time for retrieving uncompressed images may be reduced by use of SPIHT-compressed images, although the image quality is then degraded. To provide diagnostic quality images, we also investigated the retrieval of up to 3 images on a MR film at full-resolution, using progressive SPIHT decompression. The Java-based implementation of progressive decompression performed badly, mainly due to the memory requirements for maintaining the image states, and the high cost of execution of the Java garbage collector. Hence, in systems where the bandwidth is high, such as found in a hospital intranet, SPIHT image compression does not provide advantages for image retrieval performance.

Retinal images have been used in the diagnosis of many ocular diseases such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Here, automatic detection of optic disk (OD) is essential in deriving clinical parameters to assist clinical diagnosis. In fact, detecting OD center and its boundary is the essential step of most vessel segmentation, disease diagnostic, and retinal recognition algorithms. In this study, we proposed a new approach for localizing OD by combining local histogram matching and the concept of deep learning. The algorithm is composed of 4 steps, image partitioning, Local histogram matching and validation, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classification, and OD detection. Here, we used OD of the five reference retinal images in each dataset to extract the histograms of each color channel. Then, we calculated the mean of histograms for each channel as template for creating some OD candidates. An AlexNet-like CNN was applied to classify candidates as ODs or nonODs. The candidates used as an input to feed the CNN for final classification. In this study, we worked on three databases (one rural, MUMS-DB, and two publicly available databases, DRIVE, STARE) including 520 retinal images to evaluate the proposed method. The accuracy of our algorithm was 100%, 90%, and 95% for the DRIVE, STARE, and MUMS-DB respectively. It is shown that this method provides higher detection rates than the existing methods that have reported.
