An innovative algorithm is presented for the automatic detection of spot targets in infrared terrain image sequences. The algorithm is designed to successfully perform target detection also in presence of deceitful hot background structures such as rocks and sand representing the hottest regions of the scene. The original contribution is represented by the thermal model adopted for the infrared scene and which drives the intraframe processing by iteratively applying three processing steps: i) thresholding ii) clustering iii) semantic labeling. The aim of the intraframe segmentation module is first to detect well contrasted targets and then verify the presence of less contrasted ones on the hypothesis that they all belong to the same formation. At each iteration within the intraframe analysis the thermal threshold is lowered and the hot part of the scene is processed to look for the presence of targets. By theans of different clustering procedures the hot part of the scene is partitioned into a set of connected objects each characterized by a feature vector consisting of area peak thermal value and centroid coordinates. The objects which correspond to the target model are marked as potential targets. If they have been already detected during the previous iterations without sensible changes in the descriptive parameters they are labeled as " confirmed" targets. If on the contrary the area has significantly increased they are labeled as " expanded" targets. If a

In this paper, we evaluate different non-rigid image registration methodologies in the context of atlas-based brain image segmentation. Three non-rigid voxel-based registration regularization schemes (viscous fluid, elastic and curvature-based registration) combined with the mutual information similarity measure are compared. We conduct large-scale atlas-based segmentation experiments on a set of 20 anatomically labelled MR brain images in order to find the optimal parameter settings for each scheme. The performance of the optimal registration schemes is evaluated in their capability of accurately segmenting 49 different brain sub-structures of varying size and shape.

In this work;we introduced an algorithm for image reconstruction in helical cone-beam CT based upon the backprojection-filtration (BPF) algorithm. This algorithm is a backprojection-filtration-type algorithm that reconstructs images from rebinned data. It retains the properties of the original BPF algorithm in that it;requires minimum data and can reconstruct. ROI images from truncated data. More importantly, due to the elimination of the spatially-variant weighting factor in the backprojection, it, may improve the noise properties in reconstructed images. We have performed computer-simulation studies to investigate the ROI-image reconstruction and noise properties of this algorithm, and the;quantitative results verify and demonstrate the proposed algorithm.

We propose two new approaches which consider the specific sonar image segmentation problem in a statistical regularization framework, based on hierarchical Markov Random Field (MRF) modeling. Within this framework, data-driven parameters estimation is performed using a mixture distributions and the contextual parameters are estimated by using the ''qualitative box'' method. Then we developp two unsupervised segmentations algorithms. The first one, based on a multigrid approach, requires pyramidal structure of the label field, associated to a single observation level: the MRF energy function is re-written at each scale as a coarser MRF model (derived from the one defined at full resolution). The second algorithm we proposed is based on a multiresolution approach: an observation pyramid is obtained by image projection on biorthogonal wavelets. The Signal to Noise Ratio is thus increased and allows to give a good initialization for the regularization algorithm at each level. We also compare the robustness of these unsupervised multigrid and multiresolution approaches. Some convincing results are presented and validate these new approaches for synthetic and real sonar picture segmentation.

This paper describes an integrated approach to image segmentation and shape analysis and its application to left ventricle motion and deformation analysis based on CT volumetric data. The proposed approach is different from traditional image analysis scenario in which the image segmentation and shape analysis are usually considered separately. The advantage of integrating the image segmentation with the shape analysis lies in the fact that the shape characteristics of the object can be used as effective constraints in the process of segmentation while original image data can be made useful along with the segmentation results in the process of shape analysis. In the case of left ventricle motion estimation through shape analysis based on CT volumetric data, such an integration can be applied to obtain the estimation results that are consistent with both given image data and a prior shape knowledge. The initial segmentation of the images is obtained through adaptive K-mean classification and the boundary of the given objects is computed based on such segmentation. The shape analysis is accomplished through fitting the boundary points to the surface modeling primitives. These two processes are integrated through the feedforward and feedback channels so that the surface fitting is weighted by the confidence measures of the boundary points and segmentation refinement is controlled by the result of surface modeling. Its application to left ventricle motion analysis is implemented through identifying the correspondences between the parameters of surface modeling primitives and the parameters of motion and deformation modeling. The preliminary results of the application show the promising improvement of such integrated approach over the traditional approaches.

In this paper, we propose a method for low-level unsupervised image segmentation via texture recognition and feature space clustering. The texture measure is based on the computation of n-tuple features of gray level values within the co-occurrence operator. These features are extracted from small local areas of the image. The strategy results in a feature vector transformation of the image. Self-evolving clustering is then used to group these feature vectors into clusters of homogeneous textured regions. The method as presented is applied to, and shown to be capable of, segmenting natural texture image composites. The method is computationally simple and can be implemented in hardware for real-time operation.

The standard separable two-dimensional (2-D) wavelet transform (WT) has recently achieved a great success in image processing because it provides a sparse representation of smooth images. However, it fails to capture efficiently one-dimensional (1-D) discontinuities, like edges or contours.' These features, being elongated and characterized by geometrical regularity along different directions, intersect and generate many large magnitude wavelet coefficients. Since contours are very important elements in visual perception of images, to provide a good visual quality of compressed images, it is fundamental to preserve good reconstruction of these directional features. We propose a construction of critically sampled perfect reconstruction transforms with directional vanishing moments (DVMs) imposed in the corresponding basis functions along different directions, called directionlets. We also demonstrate the outperforming non-linear approximation (NLA) results achieved by our transforms and we show how to design and implement a novel efficient space-frequency quantization (SFQ) compression algorithm using directionlets. Our new compression method beats the standard SFQ both in terms of mean-square-error (MSE) and visual quality, especially in the low-rate compression regime. We also show that our compression method, does not increase the order of computational complexity as compared to the standard SFQ algorithm.

This paper describes how motion segmentation can be achieved by analyzing of a single static image that is created from a series of picture frames. The key idea is motion imaging; in other words, motion is expressed in static images by integrating, frame after frame, the spatiotemporal fluctuations of the gradient gray level at each local area. This tends to create blurred or attached line images (images with lines that show the path of movement of an object through space) on moving objects. We call this 'motion texture'. We computed motion texture images based on the animation of a natural scene and on a number of computer synthesized animations containing groups of moving objects (random dots). Moreover, we applied two different texture analyses to the motion textured images for segmentation: a texture analysis based on the local homogeneity of gray level gradation in similarly textured regions and another based on the structural feature of gray level gradation in motion texture. Experiments showed that subjective visual impressions of segmentation were quite different for these animations. The texture segmentation described here successfully grouped moving objects coincident to subjective impressions. In our random dot animations, the density of the basic motion vectors extracted from each pair of successive frames was set at a constant to compensate for the dot grouping effect based on the vector density. The dot appearance period (lifetime) is varied across the animations. In a long lifetime random dot animation, region boundaries can be more clearly perceived than in a short one. The different impressions may be explained by analyzing the motion texture elements, but can not always be represented successfully using the motion vectors between two successive frames whose density is set at a constant between the animations with the different lifetime.

This article presents a coding scheme using variable block-size transform coding together with vector quantization (VQ) called VBSTVQ (variable block-size transform vector quantization). The VBSTVQ shows a satisfying picture quality at bitrates of about 0.3-0.6 bit/pel (coding of the luminance signal only). The coding scheme is well suited for multimedia, computer and distribution applications due to its asymmetry in complexity and its inherent hierarchical structure. The picture is segmented into rectangles of different sizes. These rectangles are transformed by a two-dimensional DCT and coded by VQ based on analysis in the spatial and transform domain. A decomposition scheme of the rectangles into vectors which is adapted to non-stationary signals like edges will be introduced. Computer simulations compare the results of constant and variable blocksize TVQ.
