In this paper, a novel wavelet-morphology method for the detection of mass abnormalities in digital mammograms is presented. The new scheme utilizes the feature extraction capability of the wavelet transform followed by a novel recursive-enhancement morphology algorithm to detect the masses. A morphology-based segmentation algorithm is finally applied to the enhanced image to separate the mass from the normal breast tissues. This technique outlines the shape of the region of interest (mass in mammograms). Tests results have confirmed the efficacy of the technique in automated detection of abnormalities in wavelet based compressed mammograms.

An important first step in diagnosis and treatment planning using tomographic imaging is differentiating and quantifying diseased as well as healthy tissue. One of the difficulties encountered in solving this problem to date has been distinguishing the partial volume constituents of each voxel in the image volume. Most proposed solutions to this problem involve analysis of planar images, in sequence, in two dimensions only. We have extended a model-based method of image segmentation which applies the technique of iterated conditional modes in three dimensions. A minimum of user intervention is required to train the algorithm. Partial volume estimates for each voxel in the image are obtained yielding fractional compositions of multiple tissue types for individual voxels. A multispectral approach is applied, where spatially registered data sets are available. The algorithm is simple and has been parallelized using a dataflow programming environment to reduce the computational burden. The algorithm has been used to segment dual echo MRI data sets of multiple sclerosis patients using lesions, gray matter, white matter, and cerebrospinal fluid as the partial volume constituents. The results of the application of the algorithm to these datasets is presented and compared to the manual lesion segmentation of the same data.

Focus of attention is often attributed to biological vision system where the entire field of view is first monitored and then the attention is,focused to the object of interest. We propose using a similar approach for object recognition in a color image sequence. The intention is to locate an object based on a prior motive, concentrate on the detected object so that the imaging device can be guided toward it. We use the abilities of the intelligent image analysis framework developed in our laboratory to generate an algorithm dynamically to detect the particular type of object based on the user's object description. The proposed method uses color clustering along with segmentation. The segmented image with labeled regions is used to calculate the shape descriptor parameters. These and the color information are matched with the input description. Gaze is then controlled by, issuing camera movement commands as appropriate. We present some preliminary results that demonstrate the success of this approach.

The problem of estimating feature orientation from noisy image data is addressed using a multiresolution technique. It is shown that by an appropriate choice of representation of orientation, it is possible to employ simple linear smoothing methods to reduce estimation noise. The smoothing is done using a combination of scale-space recursive filtering and iterative estimation, giving significant improvements in estimated orientations at low computational cost. Applications to enhancement and segmentation are presented.

As advances in imaging technologies make more and more data available for biomedical applications, there is an increasing need to develop efficient quantitative algorithms for the analysis and processing of imaging data. In this paper, we introduce an innovative multiscale approach called Directional Ratio which is especially effective to distingush isotropic from anisotropic structures. This task is especially useful in the analysis of images of neurons, the main units of the nervous systems which consist of a main cell body called the soma and many elongated processes called neurites. We analyze the theoretical properties of our method on idealized models of neurons and develop a numerical implementation of this approach for analysis of fluorescent images of cultured neurons. We show that this algorithm is very effective for the detection of somas and the extraction of neurites in images of small circuits of neurons.

This paper describes a method for off-line recognition of handprinted and cursive words. The module takes as input a binary word image and a lexicon of strings, and ranks the lexicon according to the likelihood of match to the given word image. To perform recognition, a set of character models is used. The models employ a graph representation. Each character model consists of a set of features in spatial relationship to one another. The character models are automatically built in a clustering process. Character merging is performed by finding the appropriate correspondences between pairs of character sample features. This is accomplished by finding a solution to the assignment problem, which is an O(n³) linear programming algorithm. The end result of the training process is a set of random graph character prototypes for each character class. Because it is not possible to clearly segment the word image into characters before recognition, segmentation and recognition are bound together in a dynamic programming process. Results are presented for a set of word images extracted from mailpieces in the live mailstream.

We describe a deformable model based technique for Cardiac MRI segmentation. The technique assumes that the data is available in the form of 2-D slices of the heart. An initial approximation of the boundary of the object of interest, say, the left ventricle, is specified in one of the slices, via a user-interface. The initial contour deforms to a contour with minimum energy, which is defined to be the correct ventricular boundary. This contour is then propagated to other slices, both in space and in time, to get the segmented volume at various instants in the cardiac cycle. This work is a part of our ongoing effort on cardiac MR analysis. The segmentation algorithm discussed here is intended to be a preprocessing stage for our work in volume computation and cardiac wall motion analysis. We have tested the segmentation algorithm extensively on over 500 images, and our clinical collaborators have found the results to acceptable, both qualitatively, and quantitatively. Our system is being installed for use in routine clinical practice.

This paper describes a texture coding technique mainly suitable for segmentation-based coding schemes. The main features of the proposed technique are its efficiency in terms of bits per pixel for homogeneous regions and its ability to deal with local inhomogeneities that may be present in the image. The basic idea of the coding strategy is to divide the image into blocks and to classify the blocks in two categories: Referable and Nonreferable. Referable means that the block can be approximated by one block of the already transmitted texture and nonreferable is defined by opposition. Nonreferable blocks are transmitted with a general purpose coding scheme (for example a DCT-based technique) and referable blocks are transmitted by means of a simple transition vector indicating which sample of the transmitted texture has to be translated. We show that this technique is suitable for texture but produces distortions for strong contours. As a result, we propose to use it within a segmentation-based coding scheme where contours are transmitted by another strategy. Finally, the application to sequence coding is discussed. It is shown that this technique is particularly attractive to code the prediction error within a motion compensated video coding scheme.

In order to improve the segmentation accuracy of 3D point cloud model in feature ambiguous region, the unsupervised clustering algorithm based on surface fusion features combines the depth residuals with the normal deviation angle to form the fusion features with good descriptive properties and significant differentiation. Adopting the point cloud local density median proximity points as the candidate points for point cloud region growth, using point cloud cluster features instead of individual point features, for the problem of feature ambiguity in the edge region, the unattributed points are reclustered, so as to improve the cluster segmentation in the way of extended growth;experiments are conducted on the selected model dataset, and the results show that the method can achieve the reasonable segmentation of the complex point cloud model, and the under-segmentation situation has a obvious improvement on the under-segmentation situation. © 2024 SPIE.

Pulse coupled neural network (PCNN) algorithms for image preprocessing have minimal requirements for interconnects and essentially no memory requirements. They are an effective technique for rapid intensity segmentation and noise smoothing as an initial step in many image processing algorithms. A test array with 32x32 active PCNN pixels has been undergoing initial evaluation. Its performance is discussed and comparison with software versions of the PCNN algorithm is given.
