In order to overcome defects resulted from replacing the photo background color, an improved method is proposed for background replacement. The α-values in the alpha matte are transformed to enhance the details in the transition area. The new photo is composited by comprehensively considering the foreground portrait, new background, old background and the alpha matte. The experimental results show that the foreground portrait appears clearer and more complete, and the transition area between the foreground and background is more harmonious and more natural. © 2024 SPIE.

Garbage classification can be seen everywhere in today's society, but due to the changes of the times, the awareness that different types of waste should go into different types of bins is not widespread among most people. Even some people don't even know what kinds of garbage there are. Therefore, it is very important to identify garbage. In order to speed up training and recognition, the author improved the YOLOv8 algorithm newly released this year, and at the same time used crawlers to crawl thousands of pictures of different types of garbage on the Internet for training. The author obtained the model with the highest accuracy by increasing the number of epochs and adjusting the batch. © 2024 SPIE.

Studies by grassland workers have shown that the occurrence of degradation indicator plants in grassland is an important sign of grassland degradation. The detection of degradation indicator plants can provide a certain data basis for the study of grassland degradation. In this paper, a target detection algorithm for improving YOLOv5 model is proposed to detect the degradation indicator plants (wolfsbane) in grassland. Firstly, the target detection dataset of the grassland degradation indicator plant(wolfsbane)is constructed, and then the backbone network is optimized by adding a coordinate attention mechanism on the basis of the original YOLOv5 model;The original feature pyramid module in the feature fusion module is replaced by a weighted bidirectional feature pyramid (BiFPN) network structure, which realizes effective weighted feature fusion and bi-directional cross-scale connection;A small target detection layer is also added to further improve the detection accuracy of small targets. Experimental results show that the proposed improved algorithm achieves an average precision (AP) of 80.4%, which is 3.4% better than the original YOLOv5 model, and verifies the effectiveness of the improved model for the detection of degraded indicator plants (wolfsbane). © 2022 SPIE.

We compared different edge detection algorithms and found that the "Marr-Hildreth" edge detection [8] have the best performance for macrocalcification shape preservation in our MCCs detection system. Edge detection is one of the most commonly used operations in image analysis. The edges form die outline of the macrocalcifications. An edge is the boundary between an object and the background, and indicates the boundary between overlapping objects. This means that if the edges in an image can be identified accurately, all of the macrocalcifications can be located and the areas, perimeters, and shapes can be measured. So edge detection is one of the effect methods to preserve the shape of microcalcifications. Based on the edge enhancement method, a new mixed feature multistage method has been developed for improving the false positive (FP) reduction performance. Eleven features were extracted from both spatial and morphology domains in order to describe the micro-calcification clusters (MCCs) from different perspectives. These features are grouped into three categories: gray-level description, shape description and clusters description. This method was combined with neural network used in our false positive reduction, that reduce the false positive from 3.1/image to 0.1/image in 50 full field digital mammograms. The 50 mammograms are with 24 normal images and 26 abnormal images, including 41 microcalcification clusters in our database.

Accurately identifying field weeds is crucial for selecting appropriate agricultural machinery and herbicides. This paper focuses on nine common weed species during the seedling stage in natural backgrounds of field vegetables, proposing a novel weed foreground segmentation method based on image processing and a new weed classification model using sparse representation classification (K_SRC). Initially, K-means clustering and threshold segmentation are applied to the a component of Lab color space to obtain binary weed images, followed by area filtering to remove interference. The binary weed image is then masked with the original image to extract clean weed images. Color features and mLBP texture features are extracted from segmented weed images to form a training sample set. KNN computes a local dictionary, and sparse coefficients are calculated using the OMP algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate a classification accuracy of 95.22% compared to four other algorithms. Additionally, this research provides new insights into the application of sparse representation in agriculture. © 2024 SPIE.

Mathematical morphology, "algebra of shape", is used in many image processing applications including machine vision recognition, visually guided robot vision systems, biomedical image processing, and low-level vision problems. The fact that mathematical morphology deals with shape characteristics of an image makes it a tool for object recognition, defect detection, and feature extraction. The analogy between the morphological operations for shape and the convolution operations for signals suggests the dominance of mathematical morphology in the image processing applications related to shape, especially in machine vision.

Many governments have some form of "direct democracy" legislation procedure whereby individual citizens can propose various measures creating or altering laws. Generally, such a process is started with the gathering of a large number of signatures. There is interest in whether or not there are fraudulent signatures present in such a petition, and if so what percentage of the signatures are indeed fraudulent. However, due to the large number of signatures (tens of thousands), it is not feasible to have a document examiner verify the signatures directly. Instead, there is interest in creating a subset of signatures where there is a high probability of fraud that can be verified. We present a method by which a pairwise comparison of signatures can be performed and subsequent sorting can generate such subsets. © 2009 SPIE-IS&T.

The guiding principle of this study is to find an optimum way to simplify the contours produced by a second generation coding scheme based on morphological segmentation. For this purpose, evaluations of existing methods for contour simplification are carried out first. Based on the human visual phenomenon, a new nonlinear filter by means of majority operation is designed to simplify the contours in order to obtain an optimum compromise between the cost for contour coding and visual quality. Applications for region-based still image coding and video coding are demonstrated. Experimental results have shown an average of 20% reduction of bits for contour coding while keeping good visual quality.

Background normalization is a low-level image processing task typically used to enhance images by eliminating featureless, nonuniform background illumination. Automatic background normalization requires three distinct steps: threshold selection and segmentation, reconstruction of background image, and subtraction. We present here an algorithm which performs radar cross-section estimation by using techniques based on simulated annealing. Standard simulated annealing approaches to image restoration attempt to categorize each image element as belonging to one of a small number of predefined image states or values. This is restrictive for tasks such as radar cross-section estimation and we present here an algorithm which is capable of producing a real-valued output. This is achieved by introducing an edge detection stage into the simulated annealing process. The action of the annealing algorithm may be viewed as a filter which adapts to local image structure. We present results which demonstrate this behavior and in so doing allow us to estimate the residual noise levels we might expect.
