Methods for thinning connected components of an image differ in the size of support, type of connectivity preserved, degrees of parallelism and pipelining, and smoothness and fidelity to structure of the results. A unifying framework is presented, using image morphology, of all 4- and 8-connectivity-preserving (CP) transformations that use a 3 X 3 basis of support on binary images discretized on a square lattice. Two types of atomic CP transformations are defined: weak CP neither breaks nor joins components and strong CP additionally preserves the number of connected components. It is shown that out of thousands of possible 3 X 3 hit-miss structuring elements (SEs), in their most general form there are only four SEs (and their rotational isomorphs) for each of the two sets (4- and 8-connectivity) that satisfy strong CP for atomic operations. Simple symmetry properties exist between elements of each set, and duality relations exist between these sets of SEs under reversal of foreground/background and thinning/thickening operations. The atomic morphological operations, that use one SE, are intrinsically parallel and translationally invariant, and the best thinned skeletons are produced by sequences of operations that use multiple SEs in parallel. A subset of SEs that preserve both 4- and 8-connectivity and have a high degree of symmetry can be used in the most parallel fashion without breaking connectivity and produce very smooth skeletons. For thickening operations, foreground components either self-limit on convex or expand indefinitely. The self-limited convex hulls are formed either by horizontal and vertical lines, or by lines of slope +/- 1. Four types of boundary contours can result for thickening operations that expand indefinitely. Thickened text images result in a variety of typographically interesting forms.

A line segment image transform and inverse transform is used to detect and extract quasi- linear features in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The transform is a windowed version of the Radon transform. The transform begins by dividing the original image into overlapped subimages using a simple analysis filter. A Radon transform is applied to each subimage yielding a representation of the subimage in terms of line segments at varying angles and positions. The amplitude of each line segment is used to calculate the detection statistic for that line segment. Line segments whose detection statistics are above a specified threshold are passed, and the filtered subimage is reconstructed using an inverse Radon transform (convolution back projection). Finally, the filtered subimages are recombined to form the filtered version of the original image. The filtering procedure passes quasi-linear features in the original image, and rejected features that are not quasi-linear, such as speckle. The inversion procedure is designed so that the original image is reconstructed if the threshold is set to zero.

Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) has superior detection performance than mammography (DM) for population-based breast cancer screening, but the higher number of images that must be reviewed poses a challenge for its implementation. This may be ameliorated by creating a two-dimensional synthetic mammographic image (SM) from the DBT volume, containing the most relevant information. When creating a SM, it is of utmost importance to have an accurate lesion localization detection algorithm, while segmenting fibroglandular tissue could also be beneficial. These tasks encounter an extra challenge when working with images in the medio-lateral oblique view, due to the presence of the pectoral muscle, which has similar radiographic density. In this work, we present an automatic pectoral muscle segmentation model based on a u-net deep learning architecture, trained with 136 DBT images acquired with a single system (different BIRADS densities and pathological findings). The model was tested on 36 DBT images from that same system resulting in a dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 0.977 (0.967-0.984). In addition, the model was tested on 125 images from two different systems and three different modalities (DBT, SM, DM), obtaining DSCs between 0.947 and 0.970, a range determined visually to provide adequate segmentations. For reference, a resident radiologist independently annotated a mix of 25 cases obtaining a DSC of 0.971. The results suggest the possibility of using this model for inter-manufacturer DBT, DM and SM tasks that benefit from the segmentation of the pectoral muscle, such as SM generation, computer aided detection systems, or patient dosimetry algorithms.

The identification of key landmark points in an MR spine image is an important step for tasks such as vertebra counting. In this paper, we propose a template matching based approach for automatic detection of two key landmark points, namely the second cervical vertebra (C2) and the sacrum from sagittal MR images. The approach is comprised of an approximate localization of vertebral column followed by matching with appropriate templates in order to detect/localize the landmarks. A straightforward extension of the work described here is an automated classification of spine section(s). It also serves as a useful building block for further automatic processing such as extraction of regions of interest for subsequent image processing and also in aiding the counting of vertebra.

A unified model-based approach to ATR that uses 3D models to control detection, segmentation, and classification is described. Objects are modeled by rectangular boxes whose dimensions are Gaussian random variables. A fast predictor estimates the size and shape of expected objects in the image, which controls detection and segmentation algorithms. Segmentation fits oriented rectangles (length x width @ pose) to object-like regions detected using a multi-level thresholding/region tracking approach. Detections are classified by comparing measured to predicted region length and width in the pose direction. The method is fast and requires only a coarse characterization of objects/object classes.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology offers innovative remote sensing opportunity for the area of surveillance applications. However, for the Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) of aerial and ground vehicles from SAR data, there is a need for large-scale imagery of the target objects of interest (TOI's) from different perspective viewing angles - that is rarely available publically. Such large datasets can be very instrumental for the initial training of deep learning classifiers as well as for the achievement of improved transfer learning. In this paper, we address this shortcoming by introducing IRIS Electromagnetic (EM) modeling and simulation system for virtual staging and automatic generation of realistic synthetic (i.e. simulated) multi0perspective SAR imagery of the test vehicles for the purpose of training of ATR classifiers. Primarily, we prepared a collection of 250 physics-based CAD models containing different aerial and ground vehicles objects. A fourstep process was implemented. In the first step, an optimized multi-path ray-tracing technique was developed for obtaining the synthetic EM radiation backscattering reflectivity patterns of the test objects. In the second step, we furnish the synthetically generated SAR images with different backgrounds (e.g. ground, grass, and asphalt) by employing appropriate noise modulation transfer functions. In the third step, we introduced a method for projecting directional test objects' shadows from eight different perspective viewings. In the final step, the surface regions producing high-strength radiation backscatterings were highlighted to further enhance realism of the synthetically generated SAR images. To test and verify the validity and dependability of this proposed approach, we compared our simulated SAR imagery results against a number of comparable military and commercial vehicles from MSTAR dataset.

This paper present;, the results of two psychophysical experiments designed to investigate the effects of size, location, blur, and contrast on the perceived visual interest of objects within images. In the first experiment, digital composting was used to create images containing objects (humans, animals, and non-living objects) which varied in controlled increments of size, location, blur, and contrast. Ratings of perceived interest were then measured for each object. We found that: (1) As object size increases, perceived interest increases but exhibits diminished gains for larger sizes;(2) As an object moves from the center of the image toward the image's edge, perceived interest decreases nearly linearly with distance: (3) Blurring imposes a substantial initial decrease in perceived interest, but this drop is relatively lessened for highly blurred objects;(4) As an object's RMS contrast is increased, perceived interest increases nearly linearly. Furthermore, these trends were quite similar for all three categories (human, animal, non-living object). To determine whether these data can predict the perceived interest of objects in real, non-composited images, a second experiment was performed in which subjects rated the visual interest of each of 562 objects in 150 images. Based on these results, an algorithm is presented which, given a segmented image, attempts to generate an object-level interest map.

This paper discusses research directions and results from a multidisciplinary effort to develop feature extraction tools for analysis of the changes in molecular distribution during cell movement. This work is part of a broader effort directed at developing hardware for a new digital imaging microscope, as well as image restoration algorithms which precede the extraction steps, making them simpler. New voxel based display techniques are also being developed for improved visualization of the two and three dimensional data sets. The most complete feature extraction algorithm developed so far analyzes a time sequence of two-dimensional phase contrast images of newt eosinophilic granulocytes (white blood cells). It tracks a moving cell and also identifies the lamellipods of the cell. This allows the extraction of quantitative information relating cell motility to lamellipod formation. The algorithm finds the cell by finding those pixels in the image which belong to the boundary of the cell . Potential boundary pixels are identified by locating intensity changes due to the phase contrast halo surrounding the cell. While most boundary based image segmentation algorthms form a closed boundary by moving from a starting boundary pixel along a path which locally or globally optimizes a cost function our algorithm does not trace a path from a starting point and does not minimize a cost function. Instead, we close the boundary by examining the geometrical and topological relationships among potential boundary pixels. Gaps in the boundary are closed by connecting gap points to the "closest" boundary point. "Close" is determined by a distance metric which combines Euclidean and other types of geometric information about the boundary pixels already found The position of the cell in the previous image is used both to constrain the location of the cell in the image being examined and to insure that the boundary eventually found is indeed closed.

Time varying simulations are common in many scientific domains to study the evolution of phenomena or features. The data produced in these simulations is massive. Instead of just one dataset of 512(3) or 1024(3) (for regular gridded simulations) there could now be hundreds to thousands of timesteps. For datasets with evolving features, feature analysis and visualization tools are crucial to help interpret all the information. For example, it is usually important to know how many regions are evolving, what are their lifetimes, do they merge with others, how does the volume/mass change, etc. Therefore, feature based approaches, such as feature tracking and feature quantification are needed to follow identified regions over time. In our previous work, we have developed a methodology for analyzing time-varying datasets which tracks 3D amorphous features as they evolve in time. However, the implementation is for single-processor non-adaptive grids and for massive multiresolution datasets this approach needs to be distributed and enhanced. In this paper, we describe extensions to our feature extraction and tracking methodology for distributed AMR simulations. Two different paradigms are described, a "fully distributed" and a "partial-merge" strategy. The benefits and implementations of both are discussed.

This paper describes the technologies and strategies underlying a state-of-the-art system for automatic handwritten address interpretation. The system is capable of interpreting both street addresses and post office box addresses. The input to the system is a grayscale image of a handwritten address and the goal is to determine the ZIP+4 code corresponding to the destination address on the mail piece. processing is accomplished through an integrated series of steps involving preprocessing, numeral field recognition (ZIP codes, street numbers, post office box numbers), national postal database retrieval, word and phrase recognition, database record matching, and a decision strategy. In a formal test, this system encoded 38.7 percent of the mail pieces, with an encode error rate of 8.4 percent. Adjusting system parameters designed to tradeoff encode rate for error rate produces an encode rate of 33.8 percent with a 3.9 percent encode error rate.
