Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) inspection is a non-invasive diagnostic method to assess patients' internal health status which relies on visual observation by TCM doctors according to their clinical experience. With artificial intelligence (AI) technology, TCM inspection can be objectified and modernized by using image processing and analysis methods. In this paper, we make a brief survey on the objective research of intelligent inspection technologies in TCM tongue diagnosis based on image object detection, segmentation and classification methods. We summarize the current research status of objectification of image-based TCM inspection including different methods and their performances in tongue diagnosis, discuss the problems in objectification of TCM inspection and point out its future development directions for research.

Displacement feedback control of actuators for structural testing using image processing and analysis

External displacement control (EDC) is essential to a structural test in which a servo-hydraulic actuator is connected to the specimen through loading fixtures, steel plates, and bolts in order to ensure that the specimen deformation meets the predefined displacement profile accurately. However, external displacement transducers for actuator feedback control could be detached from the specimen due to concrete spalling or steel buckling, leading to potential risks associated with actuator control stability and safety. In this study, image-based displacement feedback control of actuators for structural testing is proposed and validated, which provides a noncontact approach to measure specimen deformation. In the proposed control scheme, a high-speed camera is used to capture the images of a feature on the specimen during the test. The specimen deformation is calculated by using the captured images through online image processing and analysis. The actuator controller utilizes the calculated displacement as the feedback signal for displacement control. Finally, the proposed control scheme is validated in the laboratory. Two types of loading protocols are adopted for experimental validation including quasi-static cyclic testing and dynamic loading testing. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed image-based displacement feedback control of the actuator completes quasi-static cyclic tests and dynamic loading tests successfully and stably with satisfactory displacement tracking performance. The proposed method provides an alternative for EDC in a structural test.

image processing and analysis of Mucosal Calretinin Staining to Define the Transition Zone in Hirschsprung Disease: A Pilot Study

Purpose Quantification of calretinin-stained mucosal nerve fibers by image processing and analysis (IPA) may objectively define the transition zone (TZ) of Hirschsprung disease (HD). We tested the utility of IPA as an adjunctive tool in HD. Materials and Methods Calretinin immunostain was performed on 15 HD pull-through specimens, and multiple images were captured from the proximal aganglionic zone, TZ, and probable normal zone (NZ). Pixel count (PC), defined as the percentage of brown-stained pixels in the mucosa, was quantified and plotted against distance from the rectal distal end. To validate the method, PCs from 45 images were compared with three-tiered visual scoring by five pathologists. Results were correlated against pertinent variables, which were retrieved from the clinical record. Results The PC gradually increased in the TZ toward the proximal resection margin in 10/13 (77%) cases. The PC variation in the probable NZ and around the circumference was substantial by the coefficient of variation. The mean PC of images with a visual score of 1 was less than scores of 2 and 3 by all five (100%) pathologists ( p <0.01). One patient had possible TZ pull-through that was clinically confirmed. Conclusion While the mucosal calretinin staining gradually increases in the TZ, for now, the boundaries of the TZ cannot be accurately defined by mucosal biopsies given the substantial variation of staining around the circumference at the same distance and in the NZ. However, the IPA technique does provide a continuous variable and warrants further utility in HD studies.

The aganglionic segment of bowel in Hirschsprung's disease (HD) varies in length. It is not clear whether total colonic aganglionosis (TCA) merely represents a long form of HD or a different phenotype of the disease. Animal model studies suggest that TCA may have a longer transition zone (TZ) than conventional colorectal HD. We compared mucosal innervation of TZ in 2 TCA cases and 10 conventional colorectal HD cases by quantifying calretinin-positive mucosal nerve fibers using image processing and analysis. One TCA was associated with esophageal atresia-tracheoesophageal fistula, the other with trisomy 21. The gradients of calretinin-stained pixel count increase per distance from the beginning of TZ (slope) for TCA were not significantly different from those for the conventional HD group. Given this observation, it is speculated that the length of TZ in TCA may fall within the range of and may not be much longer than conventional colorectal HD.

Subsurface DNAPL (dense non-aqueous phase liquid) contamination from (un-) intentional spilling typically leads to severe environmental hazards. A large number of studies have demonstrated the relevance of DNAPL source zone geometry for the determination of contaminant plume propagation in groundwater. Optical imaging represents a promising non-invasive method for identifying DNAPL saturation without disturbing multiphase flow dynamics. However, workflow and image analysis methodologies have not been sufficiently developed or described for general application to related experimental efforts. For example, the choice of dye(s) used for phase colorization affects image processing and can bias final estimations of DNAPL saturations. In this study, we perform a series of DNAPL migration and entrapment studies in transparent tanks that are filled with three different types of porous media. Different dyes are used and raw images are acquired. Subsequently, these are used to evaluate a suite of image processing and analysis approaches, which are organized into a workflow. Our approach allows for us to identify key image processing and analysis steps that introduce the most error. Applicable dye configurations led to uncertainties of up to 41% depending on the selection of processing steps. Based on these findings, it was possible to delineate a flexible framework for image processing and analysis that has the potential for transfer and application in other tank experiment setups.

An Automated Measuring Methodology for Crystal Size in Sweetened Condensed Milk Using Digital image processing and analysis

Sweetened condensed milk is a widely studied product, including problems related to crystallization of the sugars during its process of industrial production and/or its shelf life. However, no studies on the standardization of techniques for measuring crystal size in sweetened condensed milk are found in the literature. In this work, a methodology for measuring crystal size in sweetened condensed milk samples, based on the use of the imageJ software for digital processing/analysis of images obtained by optical microscopy, is proposed and tested. In its final format, the proposed methodology essentially requires only the product samples, the preparation of two microscope slides containing around 0.003 g of sample covered by a lightly pressed glass coverslip, and the recording of 12 images for each slide, followed by the automated processing and analysis of these images. It provides representative values for the mean crystal size but underestimated values for the total number of crystals present in the sample.

3D characterization of Navajo sandstone cuttings using sub-micron X-ray computed tomography for permeability simulated by Lattice Boltzmann Method

Pore networks inside the Navajo Sandstone have been studied to understand the geological storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) in central Utah. Based on our micron X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) analysis of surface samples, 2.357 mu m voxel size was not high enough resolution to image the small pores. Due to the challenge of obtaining complete drill cores from depths greater than 6000 ft, only millimeter-sized Navajo Sandstone cuttings are available for analysis. Submicron X-ray CT successfully characterized the pores in cuttings from the depths of 6500 ft and 7600 ft using a voxel size of 717 nm. The results revealed the presence of pores/channels with diameters greater than 3 mu m. More importantly, a significant proportion of pores with an average diameter of 3 mu m was identified, representing between 47% and 88% of the total pore volume, located along the sand grain boundaries. The large channels and boundary pores were segmented by the pore diameter of 2.9 mu m (four voxels). Most boundary pores have significantly higher specific surface area per pore volume than the large channels, which may serve as important interfacial areas for carbonation reactions. Permeability simulated by the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) matched experimental measurements, and the visual of flow channels was similar to the large channels, indicating their primary role for fluid transportation. Furthermore, in 3D images of the Carmel formation cuttings at the same submicron resolution, no porosity was detected, suggesting that this formation could act as a seal for the Navajo formation, facilitating CO2 storage beneath it.

Computational detection, characterization, and clustering of microglial cells in a mouse model of fat-induced postprandial hypothalamic inflammation

Obesity is associated with brain inflammation, glial reactivity, and immune cells infiltration. Studies in rodents have shown that glial reactivity occurs within 24 h of high-fat diet (HFD) consumption, long before obesity development, and takes place mainly in the hypothalamus (HT), a crucial brain structure for controlling body weight. Understanding more precisely the kinetics of glial activation of two major brain cells (astrocytes and microglia) and their impact on eating behavior could prevent obesity and offer new prospects for therapeutic treatments. To understand the mechanisms pertaining to obesity-related neuroinflammation, we developed a fully automated algorithm, NutriMorph. Although some algorithms were developed in the past decade to detect and segment cells, they are highly specific, not fully automatic, and do not provide the desired morphological analysis. Our algorithm copes with these issues and performs the analysis of cells images (here, microglia of the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus), and the morphological clustering of these cells through statistical analysis and machine learning. Using the k-Means algorithm, it clusters the microglia of the control condition (healthy mice) and the different states of neuroinflammation induced by high-fat diets (obese mice) into subpopulations. This paper is an extension and re-analysis of a first published paper showing that microglial reactivity can already be seen after few hours of high-fat diet (Cansell et al., 2021 [5]). Thanks to NutriMorph algorithm, we unravel the presence of different hypothalamic microglial subpopulations (based on morphology) subject to proportion changes in response to already few hours of high-fat diet in mice.

3D Characterization of Internal Fractures in Rochester Ore Particles Crushed by Plant-Scale HPGR for Various Pressures Using High-Resolution X-Ray Computed Tomography

Recovery of metals from coarse ore particles is a great challenge for heap leaching operations of low-grade precious metal resources. Internal fractures of ore particles like micro-cracks can facilitate subsurface transportation of solution inside particles and leaching of valuable minerals. A plant-scale high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) unit at Coeur Mining's Rochester mine was operated at selected specific pressures to crush and prepare various products for crack analysis using high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (XCT). 3D shapes of cracks inside ore particles for selected size fractions reveal different damage mechanisms during HPGR crushing regarding particle size and crushing pressure. Close-to-surface cracks formed by abrasion were found in small 2.5 mm particles. Impact cracks with a high aspect ratio were found in particles of larger size and higher HPGR pressure. The volumetric percentage of internal fractures and the specific crack surface areas of selected ore particles are compared to give quantitative conclusions on particle damage by compression during HPGR crushing.

This article is devoted to the history of development and main research areas of the scientific school in the field of pattern recognition, image processing and analysis, and artificial intelligence and machine learning, founded in the early 1990s at the Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics, Lomonosov Moscow State University (SINP MSU) by Prof. Igor' Georgievich Persiantsev. For many years Persiantsev was the permanent leader of this scientific school;he laid down the basic principles and approaches to scientific research that still guide his disciples to this day. During this time, more than 30 people became students of Persiantsev's school, who carried out scientific work under his leadership or under the leadership of his disciples, defended their candidate's dissertations or diploma at the Faculty of Physics, Lomonosov Moscow State University. The article provides a brief historical background and an overview of the areas of research and major works published over more than 30 years (from 1992 to 2023) by Persiantsev and his disciples.
