Investigating the Performance of Various Relaxation Processes on the Surface Regularity and Dimensional Properties of Plain Knitted Fabrics Using the image processing technique

The main objective of this paper was to develop a more advanced finishing treatment for the stitch shape regularity and dimensional properties of knitted fabrics. In our previous work, we presented a novel definition of knitted fabric regularity. In the present study we utilised our pervious approach based on Radon transformation analysis to study the effect of different relaxation regimes on the above properties of plain fabrics. We applied various relaxation methods to plain fabrics to make the stitch shape closer to the ideal. The rhythm of stitch shape improvement was evaluated by measuring the deviation of the direction angle of the stitches against the ideal state. The results show that the average fabric irregularity index after ultrasonic-chemical relaxation treatment is better than other relaxation method indices. Moreover the average fabric constant dimensional parameter (Ks) after the above treatment is higher than values reported by pervious workers. Therefore we propose this relaxation treatment as a new relaxation method that is more effective with respect to plain fabric regularity and stability during usage.

Diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy by employing image processing technique to detect exudates in retinal images

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular complication of long-term diabetes and it is the major cause of visual impairment because of changes in blood vessels of the retina. Major vision loss because of DR is highly preventable with regular screening and timely intervention at the earlier stages. The presence of exudates is one of the primitive signs of DR and the detection of these exudates is the first step in automated screening for DR. Hence, exudates detection becomes a significant diagnostic task, in which digital retinal imaging plays a vital role. In this study, the authors propose an algorithm to detect the presence of exudates automatically and this helps the ophthalmologists in the diagnosis and follow-up of DR. Exudates are normally detected by their high grey-level variations and they have used an artificial neural network to perform this task by applying colour, size, shape and texture as the features. The performance of the authors algorithm has been prospectively tested by using DIARETDB1 database and evaluated by comparing the results with the ground-truth images annotated by expert ophthalmologists. They have obtained illustrative results of mean sensitivity 96.3%, mean specificity 99.8%, using lesion-based evaluation criterion and achieved a classification accuracy of 99.7%.

Potential of functional image processing technique for the measurements of contact area and contact pressure of a radial ply tire in a soil bin testing facility

The exploration principally deals with a promising applicability of image processing method for contact area determination. A digital camera mounted on a single-wheel tester was utilized to take images of contact area at four levels of tire inflation pressure (i.e. 70, 100, 140, and 175 kPa) and six levels of wheel load (i.e. 0.75, 1.75, 2.75, 3.75, 4.75, and 5.75 kN). Contact pressure measurements, subsequently, were performed utilizing seven embedded load cells incorporated in an instrumented housing in longitudinal and perpendicular direction of traversing. It was observed that contact area is a polynomial (with order of two) function of wheel load while there was a reverse linear relation between contact area and inflation pressure. Furthermore, contact pressure has linear relation with vertical load and inflation pressure. Models for contact area and contact pressure were developed by multiple regression analysis while a classical predicting model was assessed using contact area results of image processing technique. The models indicated acceptable coefficient of determinations amounts of 0.974 and 0.953 for contact area and contact pressure models, respectively. However, applied image processing method denoted R-2-value of 0.988 for contact pressure equation. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Hydration and dispersion are the two most common problems encounter in shale formation. These problems eventually give rise to some serious wellbore instability issues, which are difficult to handle through conventional mud systems. The application of nanotechnology has now provided some inimitable solution to those integrity issues. In the current study, for the first time comparison between activated carbon and silica coated iron oxide nanoparticles in terms of filtration and shale stability is reported. Limited literature is available for both these entities;therefore focus was primarily on these particles. Both the particles were added in water-base mud system in two different concentrations of (0.25-0.50) wt% that are equivalent to 0.875-1.75 g respectively. Result reveals that the effect of high concentration of activated carbon was effective in terms of reducing the loss of filtrate volume from the mud system. Furthermore, thin and smooth filter cake was obtained for both samples of nanoparticles and high weight percent samples of activated carbon. Moreover, both the samples of activated carbon demonstrate better shale inhibition characteristics. After an immersion test, the recovered shale sample from activated carbon exhibits less erosion and cracks on its outer surface. On the contrary, a larger quantity of salt deposition on the shale surface was witnessed in the nanoparticle sample. In addition, shale samples behave more hydrophobic under the influence of activated carbon. This hydrophobicity increases as the concentration of activated carbon increases in the mud system. The results of filtration and immersion tests were also modeled using the image processing technique in order to validate all the findings of this study.

A new method has been developed for evaluating the antibacterial activity of sample based on the area instead of the length of zone of inhibition, using image processing technique. The suggested method has been carried out on 51 Ag coated antibacterial fabrics and the results are compared with those of the standard test method. It is observed that, the results obtained from the present study follow the same trend as in standard method, in almost all samples with correlation coefficient of 0.96;this shows the reliability of described method.

The aim of the present paper is to propose an image processing technique in order to study the interfacial behavior of air-water slug two-phase flow in horizontal pipes. Here, the experiments were performed in two sets of transparent acrylic pipes with inner pipe diameters of 16 mm and 50 mm. To observe the interfacial behavior of slug flow, the liquid and gas superficial velocities were set to 0.2-0.77 m/s and 0.7-2.83 m/s, respectively. Visualization studies by using high speed video camera combined with image processing techniques were since it offered numerous advantages. Moreover, a sequential procedure was implemented for processing of each image. This technique has succeeded to enhance the image contrast and remove the uneven background. Next, a number of steps applied to binary image were also performed in order to remove the dispersed bubble attached on bubble tail which becomes one of the biggest challenges for the visualization studies of slug flow. As a result, the developed image processing technique was able to minimize the errors in order to produce the accurate measurement. Moreover, the processed image have been utilized to gather the quantitative information. It reveals the comprehensive characteristics of slug flow in horizontal pipes. Finally, a good agreement between the present and previous works proves the reliability of the developed technique.

Study of near bed stochastic turbulence and sediment entrainment over the ripples at the bed of open channel using image processing technique

In this study, the coherent structure in near bed bursting events over the ripples and mechanism of sediment bed load transport were investigated experimentally. The experiments in this study were carried out in the laboratory flume, in two parts;fixed bed ripple and mobile bed ripple. Tow artificial ripples, were built and used for making both fixed and mobile bed. For the fixed bed part, velocity fluctuations were measured using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter. In order to apply bursting analysis for obtained data, a computer program was written in visual basic language. Then, variation of turbulence shear stress associated with different bed form geometries was determined and mechanism of sediment transport by ripple shape at the bed of open channel was investigated. For the mobile bed part, artificial ripples were used as mould to make ripples. An image processing technique was used to record amount of sediment particles which are entrained and deposited over the same selected points at the fixed bed part. Results of mobile bed part, confirmed the results of shear stress analysis of fixed bed part.

The Computational Study of Fluid Diffusion through Complex Porous Media in the Presence of Gravitational Force and at Different Temperatures Using image processing technique and D3Q27 Model of Lattice Boltzmann Method

In this project, the diffusion of fluid in complex porous media was simulated using D3Q27 model of Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) in the presence of gravity force and at different temperatures and porosities. Also, the second-discretization version of LBM with Double Relaxation Times (DRT) was utilized for simulations. For better understanding of the paper regarding the order of steps of LBM calculations, a picture was drawn using a special web software to illustrate these steps in a detailed but completely regular and clear flowchart. The model of vessel (canal) including soil-like porous medium was constructed through image processing in three-dimensional space with randomly selected pixels colored as black for fixed obstacles and white pixels for fluid. For increase of accuracy, the nodes of LBM were taken as coincident on pixels of image. The entire pixels of porous medium were examined for not forming any "lake." Furthermore, the critical point of calculation of exact value of gravity acceleration in LBM scale in various conditions and for different fluids was introduced. The mathematical programs were validated using density, velocity and pressure of fluid, and the excellent consistency in calculation of pressure from mechanics formula and thermodynamics formula was illustrated, and also, the satisfaction of valid equation of continuity was presented. For ensuring pure-diffusion regime for fluid (water vapor), the Peclet number Pe was assigned a value below 0.01. For taking into account the effect of presence of porous medium on diffusion coefficient of fluid, the tortuosity concept entered into calculations and a related equation in two forms was used and the comparison was made between them, with the Troeh et al. equation as a fundamental criterion in this regard. Development of an lif image processing technique for measuring drop sizes in a pre-swirl spray

Depth of field effects in laser sheet imaging were considered for droplet sizing of a pre-swirl spray. A pre-swirl spray is formed before the hollow-cone type main-swirl spray from a D.I. gasoline injector, and shows transient characteristics with high axial velocity. A microscopic imaging technique was applied to obtain high spatial resolution LIF tomograms of the pre-swirl spray. A I mm thick Nd:YAG laser sheet was used as a light source to make the LIF tomograms that were imaged using a high-resolution CCD camera. The droplet sizing of the pre-swirl spray was carried out using an image processing technique. In the image processing procedure, the laser sheet-straddling large-sized droplets were carefully taken into account to remove the errors caused by the depth of field effects from the limited thickness and the energy distribution of the laser sheet. The mean intensity of the individual droplets and the line profile of the LIF signal around the droplet edge were inspected to screen the laser sheet-straddling large-sized droplets. In order to consider the effects of the size-dependent LIF signal intensity, the size-classified or ensemble-averaged mean intensity of the individual droplets was introduced. The mean droplet sizes such as AMD and SMD were calculated using only screened droplets, and they slightly increase before considering the depth of field effects.

Nanotechnology is a new emerging technology having endless applications in the real world. It is a technology whose future is completely uncharted. It is an interdisciplinary field that has brought evolution in the current era of various applications and developments in various fields such as applied science, mechanical, electrical and many others. In this paper, we highlight the multidisciplinary "green" approach toward the mass production of carbon-based nanomaterials as a natural precursor by using rice bran. The synthesized carbon nanoparticle (CNP) was characterized by using various instrumental techniques like FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDAX, TEM and UV-Visible spectroscopy for confirming the presence of carbon particles in nanosize. Then, by using image processing technique in computer science, the CNP was identified through pixel intensity difference obtained in SEM image. Also the corresponding algorithm has been identified to be used in image processing technique.
