ROBUST 1-D EQUIVALENT OF PHASE-CORRELATION image registration algorithm

An alternative version of the phase-correlation algorithm for image registration is presented. It is based on consideration of an N2 elements 1-D vector instead of an N ?? N pixel matrix. While the total number of operations does not change, this organisation lends itself to a straightforward hardware implementation, which is less demanding in terms of memory performance.

Accurate registration of multi-focus images is essential in the fields of image fusion and shape from focus. A new image registration model, which is based on the geometry of multi-focus imaging, is presented for multi-focus images. The model contains only one parameter to be calibrated, and the parameter has explicit physical meaning. Golden section search is utilized to calibrate the parameter in our global image registration algorithm. Experimental results show that the model and algorithm can improve registration accuracy of multi-focus images and the method is superior to the widely used method based on affine transformation. Finally, factors affecting the registration error of our method are analyzed by simulation, and suggestions are given to improve the registration accuracy in practical applications. Aiming at the requirement of obtaining the panorama of the worktable in the automatic cutting system of workpiece groove based on machine vision, an image registration algorithm based on SIFT and improved PROSAC is proposed. First, SIFT algorithm is used for feature detection and feature description. Then, the bidirectional matching and cosine similarity method are used for rough matching of feature points. Finally, an improved PROSAC algorithm is proposed, which purifies the matching points and calculates the image transformation matrix. In image fusion, the weighted average method is used to fuse the overlapping parts of the image to obtain a whole image of the cutting platform. Experimental results show that the algorithm in this paper has been improved in terms of matching accuracy and time-consuming compared with several classical algorithms.

In the field of nanotechnology, tracking freely swimming microorganisms under a microscope is difficult. An image of the target often rotates and changes shape as it moves. Further, the difficulty increases with background changes and fluctuations of colors and the brightness because of differences in the surrounding environment. To address these problems, we propose a tracking method combined with robust image processing of the data obtained by the tracking system. Our system feeds image processing data back, and obtains accurate positions of swimming microorganisms in real-time.

Because of the flight of the remote sensing camera in the orbit, the successive images of the scenes captured by the remote sensing camera are different at any time. So it is difficult for the camera to implement autofocus. In this paper, an auto-focusing method in the remote sensing camera is proposed based on successive two images captured in a short time which have an overlapped region where scenes are same. Firstly, the space camera moving in the orbit, shoots one picture every time the camera adjusts its focus, and then we can obtain a sequence of images after several times, from which the displacement and the overlapped regions of two adjacent images can be calculated by image registration algorithm. We can take every two adjacent images as a group. Therefore, every image has a value of focusing accuracy by performing a sharpness evaluation function on the overlapped region of each image. Finally, according to the transfer characteristic of evaluation values of every two partly overlapped images, we can unify the evaluation values in a same merit evaluation system. And then find the maximum value of image evaluation values in a same evaluation system, so we can find the accurate focus. Simulation experiment shows that this method works pretty well in auto focusing when relative motion between the camera and the object is existed. This method can be used in aerial camera and remote sensing camera.

Non-Contact Assessment of Swallowing Dysfunction Using Smartphone Captured Skin Displacements

Early and accurate dysphagia diagnosis is essential for reducing the risk of associated co-morbidities and mortalities. Barriers to current evaluation methods may alter the effectiveness of identifying at-risk patients. This preliminary study evaluates the feasibility of using iPhone X-captured videos of swallowing as a non-contact dysphagia screening tool. Video recordings of the anterior and lateral necks were captured simultaneously with videofluoroscopy in dysphagic patients. Videos were analyzed using an image registration algorithm (phase-based Savitzky-Golay gradient correlation (P-SG-GC)) to determine skin displacements over hyolaryngeal regions. Biomechanical swallowing parameters of hyolaryngeal displacement and velocity were also measured. Swallowing safety and efficiency were assessed by the Penetration Aspiration Scale (PAS), Residue Severity Ratings (RSR), and the Normalized Residue Ratio Scale (NRRS). Anterior hyoid excursion and horizontal skin displacements were strongly correlated with swallows of a 20 mL bolus (r(s) = 0.67). Skin displacements of the neck were moderately to very strongly correlated with scores on the PAS (r(s) = 0.80), NRRS (r(s) = 0.41-0.62), and RSR (r(s) = 0.33). This is the first study to utilize smartphone technology and image registration methods to produce skin displacements indicating post-swallow residual and penetration-aspiration. Enhancing screening methods provides a greater chance of detecting dysphagia, reducing the risk of negative health impacts.

A Method for Achieving Nanoscale Visual Positioning Measurement Based on Ultra-Precision Machining Microstructures

Microscopic visual measurement is one of the main methods used for precision measurements. The observation morphology and image registration algorithm used in the measurement directly affect the accuracy and speed of the measurement. This paper analyzes the influence of morphology on different image registration algorithms through the imaging process of surface morphology and finds that complex morphology has more features, which can improve the accuracy of image registration. Therefore, the surface microstructure of ultra-precision machining is an ideal observation object. In addition, by comparing and analyzing the measurement results of commonly used image registration algorithms, we adopt a method of using the high-speed SURF algorithm for rough measurement and then combining the robust template-matching algorithm with image interpolation for precise measurements. Finally, this method has a repeatability of approximately 54 nm when measuring a planar displacement of 25 & mu;m.

Model-based design of a pneumatic actuator for a dynamically reconfigurable socket for transtibial amputees

In this work, a cost-effective, scalable pneumatic silicone actuator array is introduced, designed to dynamically conform to the user's skin and thereby alleviate localised pressure within a prosthetic socket. The appropriate constitutive models for developing a finite element representation of these actuators are systematically identified, parametrised, and validated. Employing this computational framework, the surface deformation fields induced by 270 variations in soft actuator array design parameters under realistic load conditions are examined, achieving predictive accuracies within 70 mu m. The results elucidate how individual design factors influence surface deformation and, consequently, pressure distribution. A novel speckle imaging technique is employed to address the complex non-linear deformations, enabling surface displacement measurements with an accuracy of approximately 40 mu m. These measurements confirm that the Ogden N3 model can predict actuator deformation with an accuracy of 16%. These findings elucidate the relationships among actuator geometry, material behaviour, and surface deformation. Although demonstrated in a dynamically reconfigurable socket for transtibial amputees, these insights are readily transferable to other robotics applications that require soft, deformable, load-bearing interfaces. This validated modelling strategy and imaging technique provide a foundation for optimising soft actuator arrays, ultimately improving user comfort and enhancing the functionality of future prosthetic and robotic devices.

A critical goal of Alzheimer disease research is to identify disease biomarkers that can be used in clinical trials to assist in the adjudication of treatment effects. While clinical validation remains a goal for many potential Alzheimer disease biomarkers, the rapid proliferation of markers has sparked comparative efforts as well. New data acquisition methods and sophisticated image-processing algorithms are poised to make a substantial impact on our ability to make precise measurements of the structure and function of regions within the living human brain and their connections and chemical composition. This commentary provides a perspective on a recently published paper and how it illustrates progress and challenges in the field.
