We present an approach to automatic 3D reconstruction of objects depicted in Web images. The approach reconstructs objects from single views. The key idea is to jointly analyze a collection of images of different objects along with a smaller collection of existing 3D models. The images are analyzed and reconstructed together. Joint analysis regularizes the formulated optimization problems, stabilizes correspondence estimation, and leads to reasonable reproduction of object appearance without traditional multi-view cues.

This paper builds on the authors' previous work with Augmented Reality (AR) technology, where interactive three-dimensional (3D) content was developed and combined with traditional printed materials to enhance the visualization and understanding of technical information. In this study, we describe a method to rapidly create custom marker-based AR content using 3D data from real objects and an authoring tool developed in-house. We present a two step process, where 3D geometry is generated automatically by capturing and processing a series of photographs of a real object and subsequently converted to an AR element that can be linked to a unique marker and used with a marker-based AR system. This system provides an opportunity for instructors to quickly and effortlessly create their own AR content to support their innovative teaching practices.

The paper illustrates the project of an interdisciplinary team composed of archaeologists and researchers of the Scuola Normale Superiore and the University of Pisa. The synergy between these Centres has recently allowed for a more articulated 3D simulation of the agora of Segesta. Here, the archaeological excavations have brought to light the remains of a huge public building (stoa) of the Late-Hellenistic Period. Computer graphics and image-based modeling have been used to monitor, document and record the different phases of the excavation activity (layers, findings, wall structures) and to create a 3D model of the whole site. In order to increase as much as possible the level of interaction, all the models can be managed by an application specially designed for an immersive virtual environment (CAVE-like system). By using hands tracking sensor (Leap) in a non-standard way, the application allows for a completely hand-free interaction with the simulation of the agora of Segesta and the different phases of the fieldwork activities. More specifically, the operator can use simple hand gestures to activate a natural interface, scroll and visualize the perfectly overlapped models of the archaeological layers, pop up the models of single meaningful objects discovered during the excavation, and obtain all the relative metadata (stored in a dedicated server) which are visualizable on external devices (e.g. tablets or monitors) without further wearable devices. All these functions are contextualized within the whole simulation of the agora, so that it is possible to verify old interpretations and enhance new ones in real-time, simulating within the CAVE the whole archaeological investigation, going over the different phases of the excavation in a more rapid way, getting information which could have been ignored during the fieldwork, and verifying, even ex-post, issues not correctly documented during the fieldwork. Thanks to the advances in integrating photogrammetry and computer vision, as well as in some numeric algorithms and methods, it is possible to aspire to turn 2D (images) into 3D (point clouds) in an automatic, flexible and good-quality way. This article presents a new method through the development of PW (Photogrammetry Workbench) (and how this could be useful for architectural modeling). This tool enables the user to turn images into scale 3D point cloud models, which have a better quality than those of laser systems. Moreover, the point clouds may include the respective orthophotos with photographic texture. The method allows the study of the typology of architecture and has been successfully tested on a sample of ten religious buildings located in the region of Aliste, Zamora (Spain).

Materials have a hierarchical nature, deriving often their most useful properties from microscale or nanoscale constituents. Multiresolution analysis, a generalized continuum mechanics-based theory, uses extra degrees of freedom to account for an arbitrary number of these nested length scales. In the past, multiresolution analyses have focused mostly on metal alloys. While this article addresses recent advances in image-based multiresolution analysis of metal alloys, it also highlights extensions to multiresolution theory for modeling of bone mechanics and multiresolution analysis of polymers and polymer nanocomposites. A strong link between molecular dynamics simulations and macroscale multiresolution analyses is shown for both polymers and polymer nanocomposites. The forthcoming work is greatly indebted to the pioneering advances of Ted Belytschko in many areas of computational mechanics;his influence on our work and on the field of finite elements as a whole is substantial. Rapid geometric modeling for visual simulation using semi-automated reconstruction from single image

This paper presents a novel algorithm that enables the semi-automatic reconstruction of human-made structures (e.g., buildings) into piecewise planar 3D models from a single image. This allows the models to be readily used in virtual or augmented reality visual simulations or for data acquisition in 3D geographic information systems. Contrary to traditional labor-intensive but accurate single view reconstruction (SVR) solutions based purely on geometric constraints, and contrary to recent fully automatic albeit low-accuracy SVR algorithms based on statistical inference, the presented method achieves a compromise between speed and accuracy, leading to less user input and acceptable visual effects. The user input required in the presented approach is primarily a line drawing that represents an outline of the building to be reconstructed. Using this input, the developed method takes advantage of a newly proposed vanishing point (VP) detection algorithm that can simultaneously estimate multiple VPs in an image. With those VPs, the normal direction of planes-which are projected onto the image plane as polygons in the line drawing-can be automatically calculated. Following this step, a linear system similar to the traditional SVR solutions can be used to achieve 3D reconstruction. Experiments that demonstrate the efficacy and visual outcome of the developed method are also described, highlighting the method's potential use for rapid geometric model building of surrounding structures in visual simulation of engineering processes.

This paper introduces the meshfree Reproducing Kernel Particle Method (RKPM) in conjunction with a stabilized conforming nodal integration for 3D image-based modeling of skeletal muscles. This approach allows for construction of simulation model based on pixel data obtained from medical images. The model consists of different materials and muscle fiber direction obtained from Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) is input at each pixel point. The reproducing kernel (RK) approximation also allows a representation of material heterogeneity with smooth transition. A multiphase multichannel level set based segmentation using Magnetic Resonance images (MRI) and DTI formulated under a modified functional has been integrated into RKPM framework. The use of proposed methods for modeling the human lower leg is demonstrated.

This paper presents a novel approach to automatically generate a plausible 3D model from a single outdoor image. Outdoor scene can be modeled as a set of planar billboards such as ground, sky and vertical trees or buildings. This Cut-and-Fold system takes the advantages of the statistical classification method for high-level geometric labeling of the image regions and the automatic image segmentation algorithm for detailed boundaries of the geometric regions to generate accurate geometric labeling and realistic rendering of novel views. Taking a single image as input, our method first roughly classifies each sub-region to the geometric categories: vertical, ground or sky. Then image segmentation algorithm is employed to refine the labeling results and generate accurate boundaries for the geometric regions. After cutting the image into several regions with their geometric labels, the system folds the regions into 3D billboards with accurate boundaries. The experimental results demonstrate that our method is capable of creating plausible 3D models automatically for a wide range of outdoor scenes.

Computer methods for follow-up study of hemodynamic and disease progression in the stented coronary artery by fusing IVUS and X-ray angiography

Despite a lot of progress in the fields of medical imaging and modeling, problem of estimating the risk of in-stent restenosis and monitoring the progress of the therapy following stenting still remains. The principal aim of this paper was to propose architecture and implementation details of state of the art of computer methods for a follow-up study of disease progression in coronary arteries stented with bare-metal stents. The 3D reconstruction of coronary arteries was performed by fusing X-ray angiography and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) as the most dominant modalities in interventional cardiology. The finite element simulation of plaque progression was performed by coupling the flow equations with the reaction-diffusion equation applying realistic boundary conditions at the wall. The alignment of baseline and follow-up data was performed automatically by temporal alignment of IVUS electrocardiogram-gated frames. The assessment was performed using three six-month follow-ups of right coronary artery. Simulation results were compared with the ground truth data measured by clinicians. In all three data sets, simulation results indicated the right places as critical. With the obtained difference of 5.89 +/- A similar to 4.5 % between the clinical measurements and the results of computer simulations, we showed that presented framework is suitable for tracking the progress of coronary disease, especially for comparing face-to-face results and data of the same artery from distinct time periods.

A semi-automatic image-based approach for city street modeling was proposed, which takes two types of images as input. One is an orthogonal aerial image of the area of interest and the other is a set of street-view spherical panoramic images. This paper focuses on the accuracy enhancement of camera trajectory recovery, which is crucial in registering two types of image sources. Scale-invariant Feature Transform feature detection and matching methods were employed to identify corresponding image points between each pair of successive panoramic images. Due to the wide field-of-view of spherical panoramic images and high image recording frequency, the number of resultant matches is generally very large. Instead of directly applying RANSAC which is very time consuming, we proposed a method to preprocess those matches. We claim that the majority of incorrect or insignificant matches will be successfully removed. Several real-world experiments were conducted to demonstrate that our method is able to achieve higher accuracy at estimating camera extrinsic parameters, and would consequently lead to a more accurate camera trajectory recovery result.
