Single-View Reconstruction via Joint Analysis of image and Shape Collections

We present an approach to automatic 3D reconstruction of objects depicted in Web images. The approach reconstructs objects from single views. The key idea is to jointly analyze a collection of images of different objects along with a smaller collection of existing 3D models. The images are analyzed and reconstructed together. Joint analysis regularizes the formulated optimization problems, stabilizes correspondence estimation, and leads to reasonable reproduction of object appearance without traditional multi-view cues.

This paper builds on the authors' previous work with Augmented Reality (AR) technology, where interactive three-dimensional (3D) content was developed and combined with traditional printed materials to enhance the visualization and understanding of technical information. In this study, we describe a method to rapidly create custom marker-based AR content using 3D data from real objects and an authoring tool developed in-house. We present a two step process, where 3D geometry is generated automatically by capturing and processing a series of photographs of a real object and subsequently converted to an AR element that can be linked to a unique marker and used with a marker-based AR system. This system provides an opportunity for instructors to quickly and effortlessly create their own AR content to support their innovative teaching practices.

The paper illustrates the project of an interdisciplinary team composed of archaeologists and researchers of the Scuola Normale Superiore and the University of Pisa. The synergy between these Centres has recently allowed for a more articulated 3D simulation of the agora of Segesta. Here, the archaeological excavations have brought to light the remains of a huge public building (stoa) of the Late-Hellenistic Period. Computer graphics and image-based modeling have been used to monitor, document and record the different phases of the excavation activity (layers, findings, wall structures) and to create a 3D model of the whole site. In order to increase as much as possible the level of interaction, all the models can be managed by an application specially designed for an immersive virtual environment (CAVE-like system). By using hands tracking sensor (Leap) in a non-standard way, the application allows for a completely hand-free interaction with the simulation of the agora of Segesta and the different phases of the fieldwork activities. More specifically, the operator can use simple hand gestures to activate a natural interface, scroll and visualize the perfectly overlapped models of the archaeological layers, pop up the models of single meaningful objects discovered during the excavation, and obtain all the relative metadata (stored in a dedicated server) which are visualizable on external devices (e.g. tablets or monitors) without further wearable devices. All these functions are contextualized within the whole simulation of the agora, so that it is possible to verify old interpretations and enhance new ones in real-time, simulating within the CAVE the whole archaeological investigation, going over the different phases of the excavation in a more rapid way, getting information which could have been ignored during the fieldwork, and verifying, even ex-post, issues not correctly documented during the fieldwork. Microstructural Parameter-based modeling for Transport Properties of Collagen Matrices

Recent advances in modulating collagen building blocks enable the design and control of the microstructure and functional properties of collagen matrices for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. However, this is typically achieved by iterative experimentations and that process can be substantially shortened by computational predictions. Computational efforts to correlate the microstructure of fibrous and/or nonfibrous scaffolds to their functionality such as mechanical or transport properties have been reported, but the predictability is still significantly limited due to the intrinsic complexity of fibrous/ nonfibrous networks. In this study, a new computational method is developed to predict two transport properties, permeability and diffusivity, based on a microstructural parameter, the specific number of interfibril branching points (or branching points). This method consists of the reconstruction of a three-dimensional (3D) fibrous matrix structure based on branching points and the computation of fluid velocity and solute displacement to predict permeability and diffusivity. The computational results are compared with experimental measurements of collagen gels. The computed permeability was slightly lower than the measured experimental values, but diffusivity agreed well. The results are further discussed by comparing them with empirical correlations in the literature for the implication for predictive engineering of collagen matrices for tissue engineering applications.

Excavation is Destruction Digitization: Advances in Archaeological Practice

This article modifies an old archaeological adage-"excavation is destruction''-to demonstrate how advances in archaeological practice suggest a new iteration: "excavation is digitization.'' Digitization, in a fully digital paradigm, refers to practices that leverage advances in onsite, image-based modeling and volumetric recording, integrated databases, and data sharing. Such practices were implemented in 2014 during the inaugural season of the Kaymakci Archaeological Project (KAP) in western Turkey. The KAP recording system, developed from inception before excavation as a digital workflow, increases accuracy and efficiency as well as simplicity and consistency. The system also encourages both practical and conceptual advances in archaeological practice. These involve benefits associated with thinking volumetrically, rather than in two dimensions, and a connectivity that allows for group decision-making regardless of group location. Additionally, it is hoped that the system's use of almost entirely "off-the-shelf'' solutions will encourage its adoption or at least its imitation by other projects.

A Photogrammetric and Computer Vision-based Approach for Automated 3D Architectural modeling and Its Typological Analysis

Thanks to the advances in integrating photogrammetry and computer vision, as well as in some numeric algorithms and methods, it is possible to aspire to turn 2D (images) into 3D (point clouds) in an automatic, flexible and good-quality way. This article presents a new method through the development of PW (Photogrammetry Workbench) (and how this could be useful for architectural modeling). This tool enables the user to turn images into scale 3D point cloud models, which have a better quality than those of laser systems. Moreover, the point clouds may include the respective orthophotos with photographic texture. The method allows the study of the typology of architecture and has been successfully tested on a sample of ten religious buildings located in the region of Aliste, Zamora (Spain).

Rapid geometric modeling for visual simulation using semi-automated reconstruction from single image

This paper presents a novel algorithm that enables the semi-automatic reconstruction of human-made structures (e.g., buildings) into piecewise planar 3D models from a single image. This allows the models to be readily used in virtual or augmented reality visual simulations or for data acquisition in 3D geographic information systems. Contrary to traditional labor-intensive but accurate single view reconstruction (SVR) solutions based purely on geometric constraints, and contrary to recent fully automatic albeit low-accuracy SVR algorithms based on statistical inference, the presented method achieves a compromise between speed and accuracy, leading to less user input and acceptable visual effects. The user input required in the presented approach is primarily a line drawing that represents an outline of the building to be reconstructed. Using this input, the developed method takes advantage of a newly proposed vanishing point (VP) detection algorithm that can simultaneously estimate multiple VPs in an image. With those VPs, the normal direction of planes-which are projected onto the image plane as polygons in the line drawing-can be automatically calculated. Following this step, a linear system similar to the traditional SVR solutions can be used to achieve 3D reconstruction. Experiments that demonstrate the efficacy and visual outcome of the developed method are also described, highlighting the method's potential use for rapid geometric model building of surrounding structures in visual simulation of engineering processes.

Interactive image-Guided modeling of Extruded Shapes

A recent trend in interactive modeling of 3D shapes from a single image is designing minimal interfaces, and accompanying algorithms, for modeling a specific class of objects. Expanding upon the range of shapes that existing minimal interfaces can model, we present an interactive image-guided tool for modeling shapes made up of extruded parts. An extruded part is represented by extruding a closed planar curve, called base, in the direction orthogonal to the base. To model each extruded part, the user only needs to sketch the projected base shape in the image. The main technical contribution is a novel optimization-based approach for recovering the 3D normal of the base of an extruded object by exploring both geometric regularity of the sketched curve and image contents. We developed a convenient interface for modeling multi-part shapes and a method for optimizing the relative placement of the parts. Our tool is validated using synthetic data and tested on real-world images.

Finite-Element Extrapolation of Myocardial Structure Alterations Across the Cardiac Cycle in Rats

Myocardial microstructures are responsible for key aspects of cardiac mechanical function. Natural myocardial deformation across the cardiac cycle induces measurable structural alteration, which varies across disease states. Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DT-MRI) has become the tool of choice for myocardial structural analysis. Yet, obtaining the comprehensive structural information of the whole organ, in 3D and time, for subject-specific examination is fundamentally limited by scan time. Therefore, subject-specific finite-element (FE) analysis of a group of rat hearts was implemented for extrapolating a set of initial DT-MRI to the rest of the cardiac cycle. The effect of material symmetry (isotropy, transverse isotropy, and orthotropy), structural input, and warping approach was observed by comparing simulated predictions against in vivo MRI displacement measurements and DT-MRI of an isolated heart preparation at relaxed, inflated, and contracture states. Overall, the results indicate that, while ventricular volume and circumferential strain are largely independent of the simulation strategy, structural alteration predictions are generally improved with the sophistication of the material model, which also enhances torsion and radial strain predictions. Moreover, whereas subject-specific transversely isotropic models produced the most accurate descriptions of fiber structural alterations, the orthotropic models best captured changes in sheet structure. These findings underscore the need for subject-specific input data, including structure, to extrapolate DT-MRI measurements across the cardiac cycle.
