Reconstructing vascular homeostasis by growth-based prestretch and optimal fiber deposition

Computational modeling of cardiovascular biomechanics should generally start from a homeostatic state. This is particularly relevant for image-based modeling, where the reference configuration is the loaded in vivo state obtained from imaging. This state includes residual stress of the vascular constituents, as well as anisotropy from the spatially varying orientation of collagen and smooth muscle fibers. Estimation of the residual stress and fiber orientation fields is a formidable challenge in realistic applications. To help address this challenge, we herein develop a growth based Algorithm to recover a residual stress distribution in vascular domains such that the stress state in the loaded configuration is equal to a prescribed homeostatic stress distribution at physiologic pressure. A stress-driven fiber deposition process is included in the framework, which defines the distribution of the fiber alignments in the vascular homeostatic state based on a minimization procedure. Numerical simulations are conducted to test this two-stage homeostasis generation algorithm in both idealized and non-idealized geometries, yielding results that agree favorably with prior numerical and experimental data.

Large parts of the urban layout of the abandoned Roman town of Bassianae (in present-day Serbia) are still discernible on the surface today due to the deliberate and targeted quarrying of the Roman foundations. In 2014, all of the town's intramural (and some extramural) areas were surveyed using aerial photography, ground-penetrating radar, and magnetometry to analyze the site's topography and to map remaining buried structures. The surveys showed a strong agreement between the digital surface model derived from the aerial photographs and the geophysical prospection data. However, many structures could only be detected by one method, underlining the benefits of a complementary archaeological prospection approach using multiple methods. This article presents the results of the extensive surveys and their comprehensive integrative interpretation, discussing Bassianae's ground plan and urban infrastructure. Starting with an overview of this Roman town's research history, we present the details of the triple prospection approach, followed by the processing, integrative analysis, and interpretation of the acquired data sets. Finally, this newly gained information is contrasted with a plan of Roman Bassianae compiled in 1935.

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is the most prevalent valvular heart disease, afflicting 2.5% of the western-world population, and is becoming the next cardiac epidemic. MR is characterized by incomplete closure of the mitral valve (MV) caused by either primary (myxomatous degeneration and rheumatic fever) or secondary (ischemic left ventricular remodeling) etiologic factors. Ischemic MR (IMR) afflicts at least 300,000 Americans annually, an alarmingly high number that keeps rising as the population ages and grows. IMR is present in over 50% of patients with reduced left ventricular function induced by myocardial infarction. There are two major treatment strategies for IMR: valve replacement and valve repair. Although repair has long been embraced as the preferred treatment strategy, almost one third of patients experience recurrence of MR within a year of treatment. While new concepts and techniques for MV repair are continually emerging, these novel approaches must be developed with a profound understanding of MV tissue structure and mechanical behavior, which will depend on placing the MV in a larger context of overall left heart function. In addition, a detailed connection must be drawn between stress/strain at the tissue level and cellular deformation, as well as the remodeling pathways triggered via mechanotransduction in response to disease-induced alterations in geometric boundary conditions. In carrying out the research presented in this dissertation, I have aimed to address the questions of when, how, and to what extent the MV apparatus tissues physically remodel in the presence of both pathological (e.g., infarction) and non-pathological (e.g., pregnancy) perturbations to cardiac function. Additionally, I have built advanced computational finite element models to simulate the mechanical effects of disease on valvular function, and to relate disease progression to cellular and tissue-level remodeling phenomena. Recent developments in the apparel market created new tasks for computer vision application. One such challenge is designing a system for trying on clothes virtually in real-time. Proposed solutions require setting up a special stationary system for body capture and mostly generate animated avatar instead of overlaying the garments in real-time. We propose a framework that utilizes state-of-the-art monocular-based 3D skeleton reconstruction and parametric body generation techniques allowing to operate under constrained resources, such as smartphones. In addition, we also consider the problem of dealing with visual artifacts as a result of 3D projection on a real-time image and design a solution to reduce them based on iterative closest point method.

Today, a wide range of domains encompassing, e.g., movie and video game production, virtual reality simulations, augmented reality applications, make a massive use of 3D computer generated assets. Although many graphics suites already offer a large set of tools and functionalities to manage the creation of such contents, they are usually characterized by a steep learning curve. This aspect could make it difficult for non-expert users to create 3D scenes for, e.g., sharing their ideas or for prototyping purposes. This paper presents a computer-based system that is able to generate a possible reconstruction of a 3D scene depicted in a 2D image, by inferring objects, materials, textures, lights, and camera required for rendering. The integration of the proposed system into a well-known graphics suite enables further refinements of the generated scene using traditional techniques. Moreover, the system allows the users to explore the scene into an immersive virtual environment for better understanding the current objects' layout, and provides the possibility to convey emotions through specific aspects of the generated scene. The paper also reports the results of a user study that was carried out to evaluate the usability of the proposed system from different perspectives.

This paper describes a new approach for image-based modeling based on thermographic images and applied to efficiency energy studies of building facades. The approach is automatic and allows obtaining thermographic 3D models and orthoimages, which can be used to assess energy efficiency of building facades. The classical photogrammetry approach is reinforced and combined with computer vision algorithms, especially for the processes of image matching and dense surface generation, so that they have a robust performance with thermographic images. Experimental results presented here demonstrate the capability of the proposed approach using the Polytechnic Advanced School of Avila (Spain) as a case of study. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Recently, computer graphics is widely used in movies and games, etc., and modeling three-dimensional virtual objects is important for synthesizing realistic images. Since modeling realistic objects often requires special skills and takes long time, many methods have been developed to help the user generate models such as plants and buildings. However, little attention has been paid to the modeling of fish shapes because of the complexity of their shapes. We propose an interactive system for modeling a realistic fish shape from a single image. We also introduce a method called Direct Manipulation Blendshapes[1] for improving the usability of our system.

An Approximate Shading Model with Detail Decomposition for Object Relighting

We present an object relighting system that allows an artist to select an object from an image and insert it into a target scene. Through simple interactions, the system can adjust illumination on the inserted object so that it appears naturally in the scene. To support image-based relighting, we build object model from the image, and propose a perceptually-inspired approximate shading model for the relighting. It decomposes the shading field into (a) a rough shape term that can be reshaded, (b) a parametric shading detail that encodes missing features from the first term, and (c) a geometric detail term that captures fine-scale material properties. With this decomposition, the shading model combines 3D rendering and image-based composition and allows more flexible compositing than image-based methods. Quantitative evaluation and a set of user studies suggest our method is a promising alternative to existing methods of object insertion.

Incremental Structure-from-Motion (SfM) techniques have exhibited superior practicability in many recent studies;however, efficiency and robustness remain key challenges for these techniques. In this work, we propose a new incremental SfM method that overcomes these problems in a united framework that contains two iteration loops. The inner loop is a track selection loop, where a well-conditioned subset of the feature tracks is iteratively selected to accelerate the time-consuming bundle adjustment. The outer loop is a camera registration loop, where the a priori camera rotations are estimated via rotation averaging on multiple orthogonal maximum spanning trees (OMSTs) of the view-graph and used as weak supervision for the registration. The calibrated camera poses that agree with the a priori camera rotations are preferentially registered, and after all the consistent cameras have been calibrated, the remaining cameras are incrementally registered. The results of extensive experiments demonstrate that our system can reconstruct both general and ambiguous image datasets, and our system outperforms many state-of-the-art SfM systems in terms of efficiency and robustness.

ShadowPlay2.5D: A 360-Degree Video Authoring Tool for Immersive Appreciation of Classical Chinese Poetry

An immersive experience brought about by virtual reality can potentially enhance the appreciation of classical Chinese poetry, which is difficult to describe clearly in everyday language or ordinary media. However, making 3-dimensional illustrations for a 360-degree display in virtual reality is usually a labor-intensive and time-consuming procedure and hard to master for non-professional media creators, such as teachers. Motivated by the homology theory of classical Chinese poetry and painting, we propose an image-based approach of building 2.5-dimensional immersive stories to visualize classical Chinese poetry. Specifically, using Chinese shadow play as a metaphor, we have designed and implemented ShadowPlay2.5D, a sketch-based authoring tool to help novices create 360-degree videos of classical Chinese poetry easily. To ensure coverage of the diverse themes in Chinese poetry and preserve the sense of culture, we build a Chinese ink-painting style image repository of essential poetic elements identified via crowdsourcing. To facilitate construction of 2.5-dimensional scenes, we design features that support puppet-like animation, instancing, and camera organization in a 3-dimensional environment. Through two user studies, we show that ShadowPlay2.5D can help novices make a short 360-degree video in about 10-15 minutes, and the 2.5D stylized illustrations created can bring about a better immersive experience for poetry appreciation.
