The soluble lead flow battery: image-based modelling of porous carbon electrodes

A novel numerical modelling framework coupling physics-based model equations and image-based input parameters is developed to simulate the behaviour of the soluble lead flow battery when reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) electrodes are used. Experimental results are presented to validate the model. Open-source software OpenImpala is used to predict the macro-homogeneous properties of RVC from computed tomography scans of various grades of RVC. The process is repeated on manipulated datasets where a voxel dilation technique has been used to estimate the geometry of RVC electrodes with a range of thicknesses of electrodeposited material. The model predicts that with a region of free electrolyte dividing the electrodes, the electrolyte velocity is low within the electrodes. This is exacerbated by a build-up of deposit close to the inlet. By dividing the electrodes with only a porous separator, a deposit build-up is no longer seen, and the concentration within the electrodes is shown to be far more even. Finally, with an applied current density of 50 mA cm(-2), the overpotential is predicted to be reduced by over 100 mV when 100 ppi RVC electrodes are used instead of 10 ppi electrodes. An experimentally validated voltage efficiency of over 80% is achieved.

Comparison of advanced discretization techniques for image-based modelling of heterogeneous porous rocks

This contribution presents an assessment of computational techniques enabling automated simulations of complex porous rocks microstructures based on 3D imaging techniques. A subset of a CT-scanned sandstone sample is used to compare the results obtained by two advanced discretization frameworks. Raw scan results are processed by a level-set-based segmentation technique to produce smooth geometries prone to finite element discretizations. A recently developed technique is outlined for conforming mesh generation for complex porous geometries described implicitly by functions. This allows generating high-quality tetrahedral meshes with selective refinement. Next to this, a technique that uses a kinematic enrichment by incompatible modes to represent the heterogeneous geometry is explained. Both techniques use the same implicit geometry as main input for the simulations. Mechanical simulations are conducted on a subset of a scanned sample of a sandstone under triaxial loading conditions for isotropic compressive loading and for loading conditions involving a stress deviator. The results are compared and discussed based on local stress distributions and on a Mohr-Coulomb criterion with tensile cut-off. The results show that both discretization strategies yield complementary tools and allow envisioning automated simulations based on raw CT scan data for porous rocks exhibiting complex pore space morphologies.

Characterization of transport mechanisms for controlled release polymer membranes using focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy image-based modelling

Mass transport mechanisms of drug release inside a pellet formulation through polymer membrane were investigated with focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM). Through careful control of imaging conditions, sub-surface cross sectional images were acquired on two controlled release membrane samples. image analysis of porosity, pore size distribution, and pore connectivity in 3D provided a matrix of parameters to quantitatively compare samples from different formulations and processing conditions. image-based computational fluid dynamics simulations were employed to correlate membrane microporosity with flow permeability. Through high resolution FIB-SEM characterization, quantitative microporosity analysis, and mechanistic investigations of flow via image-based simulations, it was found that a 10% difference in the water content of the mixed aqueous-organic solvent used to dissolve polymers had a significant impact on the controlled release performance. This approach provides an analytical avenue to evaluate effects of permeation enhancers, solvents, and other process conditions on controlled release formulations.

The intent of this paper is to demonstrate the cultural value that Virtual Heritage experiences can generate. As a proof of concept, game resolution assets were optimized from high polygon image based models (IBMs) and rendered in real-time, within a Head Mounted Display (HMD). The case study of lot 3317 was chosen to facilitate heuristic explorations pertinent to the history of the St. Lawrence Seaway, Canada. This case study explores methods in creating and validating heritage values, while valourizing assets as a cultural resource for use in the future. While at the same time, challenging the current spatial dynamics by conceptually reducing the distance between the viewer and the flooded landscape. In addition to demonstrating the cultural values generated through the veneration of lot 3317, the paper aims to provide a model for optimizing and post processing meshes produced through Under-Water image-Base modelling.

The supply of oxygen in sufficient quantity is vital for the correct functioning of all organs in the human body, in particular for skeletal muscle during exercise. Disease is often associated with both an inhibition of the microvascular supply capability and is thought to relate to changes in the structure of blood vessel networks. Different methods exist to investigate the influence of the microvascular structure on tissue oxygenation, varying over a range of application areas, i.e. biological in vivo and in vitro experiments, imaging and mathematical modelling. Ideally, all of these methods should be combined within the same framework in order to fully understand the processes involved. This review discusses the mathematical models of skeletal muscle oxygenation currently available that are based upon images taken of the muscle microvasculature in vivo and ex vivo. Imaging systems suitable for capturing the blood vessel networks are discussed and respective contrasting methods presented. The review further informs the association between anatomical characteristics in health and disease. With this review we give the reader a tool to understand and establish the workflow of developing an image-based model of skeletal muscle oxygenation. Finally, we give an outlook for improvements needed for measurements and imaging techniques to adequately investigate the microvascular capability for oxygen exchange.

The excavated architecture of the exceptional prehistoric site of Akrotiri on the Greek island of Thera/Santorini is endangered by gradual decay, damage due to accidents, and seismic shocks, being located on an active volcano in an earthquake-prone area. Therefore, in 2013 and 2014 a digital documentation project has been conducted with support of the National Geographic Society in order to generate a detailed digital model of Akrotiri's architecture using terrestrial laser scanning and image-based modeling. Additionally, non-invasive geophysical prospection has been tested in order to investigate its potential to explore and map yet buried archaeological remains. This article describes the project and the generated results.

A multi image-based approach for modelling plant-fertiliser interaction

Phosphorus fertilisation is crucial for crop yields. However, traditional phosphate resources are dwindling, thus a more efficient use of phosphorus fertilisers is required for sustainable farming. This study demonstrates the scope of image-based models parameterised by elemental maps by assessing how a dynamic root system architecture may improve phosphorus root uptake from a fertiliser pellet. A multi-image based modelling method was developed by utilising structural imaging coupled with elemental maps. Structural imaging was used to capture barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Optic) root, soil and fertiliser pellet configurations as a domain for numerical simulations. Elemental mapping was used to image phosphorus in soil thin-sections of the same samples. These two imaging modes were aligned using an automated method and image-based models describing the diffusion and root-uptake of phosphorus in soil were parametrised using the elemental maps. Structural imaging showed root length density was increased inside and near the fertiliser pellet. Averaging elemental data revealed phosphorus gradients from the pellet. modelling results suggested: the pellet only enhances phosphorus uptake of roots within 2 mm over 30 days, densely packed roots decrease phosphorus uptake efficiency, and a root system that responded to nutrients from a fertiliser have comparatively increased phosphorus uptake efficiency near the pellet. The combination of structural and elemental imaging provides the means to accurately parameterise both the geometric and chemical aspects of models describing phosphorus movement in root-soilfertiliser systems. This approach may be applicable to other plant-soil systems where structure and elemental quantities are important to the problem.

One of the major challenges in biology concerns the integration of data across length and time scales into a consistent framework: how do macroscopic properties and functionalities arise from the molecular regulatory networks-and how can they change as a result of mutations? Morphogenesis provides an excellent model system to study how simple molecular networks robustly control complex processes on the macroscopic scale despite molecular noise, and how important functional variants can emerge from small genetic changes. Recent advancements in three-dimensional imaging technologies, computer algorithms and computer power now allow us to develop and analyse increasingly realistic models of biological control. Here, we present our pipeline for image-based modelling that includes the segmentation of images, the determination of displacement fields and the solution of systems of partial differential equations on the growing, embryonic domains. The development of suitable mathematical models, the data-based inference of parameter sets and the evaluation of competing models are still challenging, and current approaches are discussed.

Capturing the Past for the Future: an Evaluation of the Effect of Geometric Scan Deformities on the Performance of Aerial Archival Media in image-based modelling Environments

image-based modelling (IBM) applications can be used to successfully extract two-and three-dimensional information from historic aerial and satellite imagery for use in archaeological and other landscape-oriented research. The robust and highly automated nature of these applications can allow for image matching and dense scene reconstruction, even when input images lack information necessary for processing in traditional photogrammetric workflows. However, the overall quality of the content derived from IBM applications can be directly influenced by a number of variables, including the manner in which archival content is digitized. Significant geometric distortion can be induced in the scanning process when using non-photogrammetric scanning devices, which can have a negative effect on the subsequent processing of scanned imagery and accuracy of derived content such as orthomosaics and digital elevation models (DEMs). While this is a well-known issue for users of high end photogrammetry packages, the advent of IBM applications has brought the use of photogrammetric-style techniques to a wider audience who may not be aware of the impact that geometric errors of this nature can have on the quality of derived data products. This issue is demonstrated here using a set of degraded historic World War II (WWII) Allied reconnaissance photographs that have been digitized on both photogrammetric and non-photogrammetric platforms and subsequently processed in a well-known IBM application using identical processing parameters. The results are compared to those from a recently collected set of vertical stereopairs and an airborne laser scan derived DEM. Copyright (C) 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
