imperialist competitive algorithm optimized cascade controller for load frequency control of multi-microgrid system

Control of multi-energy source-based microgrid is a complex task due to the presence of unpredictable renewable energy sources (RES). This paper proposes a cascade structure of proportional derivative with (1+ PI) controller (C-PDF(1+ PI)) for load frequency control of an AC multi Micro-grid (MG). The MG contains a thermal power unit, Diesel Engine Generator (DEG), Micro Turbine (MT), Fuel Cell (FC), and uncontrolled solar and wind sources. Diverse storage device units like Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), Fly Wheel Energy Storage System (FESS), and Electric Vehicles (EV) are also included in the studied MG system. The proposed C-PDF(1+ PI) controller consists of a first stage Proportional Derivative controller with filter (PDF) and one plus proportional-integral (PI) controller in the second stage. The imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) is applied to optimize the controller parameters. To confer superiority of the C-PDF(1+ PI) controller, its responses are related with PI, PID, and PIDF controllers. It is observed that the ITAE improvement in percentage with the proposed approach is 70.64%, 53.23%, and 47.10% compared to PI, PID, and PIDF controller while considering the simultaneous variations in load, solar, and wind powers. To justify the efficacy of the ICA technique, it is compared with other well-established techniques like the Genetic algorithm (GA) and the Cuckoo Search algorithm (CSA). It is observed that for the identical system and C-PDF(1+ PI) controller, the ITAE value improvement in percentage by ICA compared to GA and CSA are 31.94% and 15.93%, respectively, while considering all the three uncertainty like changes in load condition, change in solar power irradiation and changes in wind power conditions. Finally, it is conferred that the proposed ICA optimized C-PDF(1+ PI) controller significantly improves microgrid dynamic performance under various operational conditions.

Automated generation of all feasible assembly sequences for a given product is highly desirable in manufacturing industry. Many research studies in the past decades described efforts to find more efficient algorithms for assembly sequence planning. imperialist competitive algorithm for assembly sequence planning is presented in this paper. Population individuals called countries are in two types: colonies and imperialists that all together form some empires. Each assembly sequence is encoded into the country. The proposed algorithm is tested and compared with genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization. Results show that imperialist competitive algorithm can improve the quality in solution searching and upgrade the opportunity to find optimal or near-optimal solution for assembly sequence planning.

imperialist competitive algorithm for minimum bit error rate beamforming

In this paper, the recently introduced optimisation strategy, imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) is used to design an optimal antenna array which minimises the error probability for binary phase shift keying modulation, called minimum bit error rate (MBER) beamforming. ICA is used to deal with the high complexity and high dimensionality of this challenging problem which can not be easily solved by gradient-based methods. The results are compared to that of both a genetic algorithm (GA) and the optimal array obtained by a properly set gradient based algorithm. Comparison shows that in contrast with GA, ICA leads to the array with error probability which is very close to the optimal value. Also, being faster than GA, ICA minimises the cost function with more consistency. The total results show that ICA is a powerful and reliable tool for solving complex optimisation problems such as MBER beamforming.

Dynamic economic dispatch (DED) aims to schedule the committed generating units' output active power economically over a certain period of time, satisfying operating constraints and load demand in each interval. Valve-point effect, the ramp rate limits, prohibited operation zones (POZs), and transmission losses make the DED a complicated, non-linear constrained problem. Hence, in this paper, imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) is proposed to solve such complicated problem. The feasibility of the proposed method is validated on five and ten units test system for a 24 h time interval. The results obtained by the ICA are compared with other techniques of the literature. These results substantiate the applicability of the proposed method for solving the constrained DED with non-smooth cost functions. Besides, to examine the applicability of the proposed ICA on large power systems, a test case with 54 units is studied. The results confirm the suitability of the ICA for large-scale DED problem. In this paper, we present an in-depth analysis of the unrelated parallel machine scheduling problem (UPMSP) in the context of washing machine production at Vestel Electronics. Vestel Electronics is a leading producer of washing machines and holds a noteworthy market position in the European consumer electronics industry. The production process at Vestel Electronics is make-to-order (MTO) and requires 20 assembly lines to produce 200 different products. The decision maker must consider several important factors while forming the production schedule, including job-assembly line compatibility, the release times and due dates of the jobs, and a workload balance among the different assembly lines. This study aims to develop an algorithm to minimize the total earliness and tardiness while considering sequence-and-machine-dependent setups, unequal release times, machine -job compatibility restrictions, and workload balance requirements. To address this complex scheduling problem, we propose a novel algorithm, the imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA), which has a strong exploration-exploitation balance while mimicking real-world dynamics. Our numerical results show that the ICA significantly outperforms the current practice in Vestel by 39% and the best-performing algorithms in the literature by 23% and 12%.

imperialist competitive algorithm for optimal STATCOM design in a multimachine power system

A new optimization technique, imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA), which is inspired from sociopolitical phenomenon of imperialistic competition, is proposed in this paper for optimal design of static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) in a multimachine environment. PV curves are illustrated to deduce the best location of STATCOM. The STATCOM parameter tuning problem is converted to an optimization problem which is solved by ICA. The performance of the proposed ICA based STATCOM (ICASTATCOM) is compared with Genetic algorithm (GA) based STATCOM (GASTATCOM) and open loop STATCOM under various operating conditions and disturbances. The superiority of the proposed technique in damping oscillations and enhancing voltage profiles over a wide range of operating conditions and system configurations is confirmed through eigenvalues and time domain simulation results. A novel chaotic improved imperialist competitive algorithm (CICA) is presented for global optimization. The ICA is a new meta-heuristic optimization developed based on a socio-politically motivated strategy and contains two main steps: the movement of the colonies and the imperialistic competition. Here different chaotic maps are utilized to improve the movement step of the algorithm. Seven different chaotic maps are investigated and the Logistic and Sinusoidal maps are found as the best choices. Comparing the new algorithm with the other ICA-based methods demonstrates the superiority of the CICA for the benchmark functions. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this study, a hybrid algorithm based on a refined high-order weighted fuzzy algorithm and an imperialist competitive algorithm (RHWFTS-ICA) is developed. This method is proposed to perform efficiently under short-term load forecasting (STLF). First, autocorrelation analysis was used to recognize the order of the fuzzy logical relationships. Next, the optimal coefficients and optimal intervals of adaption were obtained by means of an imperialist competitive algorithm in the training dataset. Lastly, the obtained information was employed to forecast the 48-step-ahead of the STLF problems. To validate the proposed method, eight case studies of real load data, collected from the UK and France during the years 2003 and 2004, were tested with the proposed algorithm and certain enhanced STLF forecasting models. The numerical results demonstrated the efficiency of the proposed algorithm in terms of the forecast accuracy. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

imperialist competitive algorithm for speed control of induction motor supplied by wind turbine

This paper proposes the speed control of induction motor (IM) fed by wind turbine using imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA). The wind turbine plays as a prime mover to a connected direct current (DC) generator. Pulse width modulation (PWM) is used to get three-phase alternating current (AC) voltage from the output of DC generator. The proposed design problem of speed controller is established as an optimization problem. ICA is adopted to search for optimal controller parameters by minimizing the time domain objective function. The behavior of the proposed ICA has been estimated with the behavior of the conventional Ziegler-Nichols (ZN) and genetic algorithm (GA) to prove the superiority of the proposed ICA in tuning proportional plus integral (PI) controller. Also, the behavior of the proposed controller has been tested over a wide range of operating conditions. Simulation results confirm the better behavior of the optimized PI controller based on ICA compared with other algorithms.

imperialist competitive algorithm for subcontractor selection in multiple project environments

The selection of subcontractors is a significant aspect of any project since it can have a meaningful impact on the success of the project. In other words, choosing the wrong subcontractor can lead to delays and cost overruns. Thus, selecting the best subcontractors is crucial for every general contractor. In this study, imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) is presented to solve the subcontractor selection problem (SSP) in multiple project environments by minimizing the general contractor's cost as the objective subject to resource and precedence constraints under two different circumstances. In the first circumstance, the project deadline can be postponed by paying a penalty;while the deadline cannot be deferred in the second one. The random key (RK) and the subcontractor list representation schemes are employed as encoding procedures, and the serial schedule generation scheme (SSGS) is utilized as a decoding scheme. Comparing the results of applying the presented ICA in a case study with the results obtained using an exact method and genetic algorithm (GA) validates the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to solve SSP in multiple project environments. The outcomes demonstrate that the proposed ICA is more efficient in cases where the project deadline is restricted.
