Gravity inversion of basement relief using imperialist competitive algorithm with hybrid techniques

Classically, local deterministic optimization techniques have been employed to solve such nonlinear gravity inversion problem. Nevertheless, local search methods can also be easily implemented and demonstrate higher rates of convergence;but in highly nonlinear cases such as geophysical problems, they require a reliable initial model which should be adequately close to the true model. Recently, global optimization methods have shown promising results as an alternative to classical inversion methods. Each of the global optimization algorithms has unique benefits and faults;therefore, applying different combinations of them is one of the proposed solutions for overcoming their distinct limitations. In this research, the design and implementation of the hybrid method based on a combination of the imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) and firefly algorithm (FA) as tools of two-dimensional nonlinear modeling of gravity data and as a substitute for the local optimization methods were investigated. Hybrid of ICA and FA algorithm (known as ICAFA) is a modified form of the ICA algorithm based on the firefly algorithm. This modification results in an increase in the exploratory capability of the algorithm and improvement of its convergence rate. This inversion technique was first successfully tested on a synthetic gravity anomaly originated from a simulated sedimentary basin model both with and without the presence of white Gaussian noise (WGN). At last, the method was applied to the Bouguer anomaly from a real gravity profile in Moghan sedimentary basin (Iran). The results of this modeling were compatible with previously published works which consisted of both seismic analysis and other gravity interpretations. In order to estimate the uncertainty of solutions, several inversion runs were also conducted independently and the results were in line with the final solution.

Predicting the native structure of proteins based on half-sphere exposure and contact numbers has been studied deeply within recent years. Online predictors of these vectors and secondary structures of amino acids sequences have made it possible to design a function for the folding process. By choosing variant structures and directs for each secondary structure, a random conformation can be generated, and a potential function can then be assigned. Minimizing the potential function utilizing meta-heuristic algorithms is the final step of finding the native structure of a given amino acid sequence. In this work, imperialist competitive algorithm was used in order to accelerate the process of minimization. Moreover, we applied an adaptive procedure to apply revolutionary changes. Finally, we considered a more accurate tool for prediction of secondary structure. The results of the computational experiments on standard benchmark show the superiority of the new algorithm over the previous methods with similar potential function. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Discrete imperialist competitive algorithm for the resource-constrained hybrid flowshop problem with energy consumption

The resource-constrained hybrid flowshop problem (RCHFS) has been investigated thoroughly in recent years. However, the practical case that considers both resource-constrained and energy consumption still has rare research. To address this issue, a discrete imperialist competitive algorithm (DICA) was proposed to minimize the makespan and energy consumption. In the proposed algorithm, first, each solution was represented by a two-dimensional vector, where one vector represented the scheduling sequence and another one showed the machine assignment. Then, a decoding method considering the resource allocation was designed. Finally, we combined DICA and the simulated annealing algorithm (SA) to improve the performance of the proposed approach. Furthermore, we tested the proposed algorithm based on a randomly generated set of real shop scheduling system instances and compared with the existing heuristic algorithms. The results confirmed that the proposed algorithm can solve the RCHFS with high efficiency.

In this paper, an improved imperialistic competitive algorithm is presented for real-valued optimization problems. A new method is introduced for the movement of colonies towards their imperialist, which is called assimilation. The proposed method uses Euclidean distance along with Pearson correlation coefficient as an operator for assimilating colonies with respect to their imperialists. Applications of the proposed algorithm to classical and recently published hard benchmark problems, and statistical analysis associated with the corresponding experimental results illustrated that the achieved success is significantly better than a number of state-of-the art methods.

In this paper, the recently introduced optimisation strategy, imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) is used to design an optimal antenna array which minimises the error probability for binary phase shift keying modulation, called minimum bit error rate (MBER) beamforming. ICA is used to deal with the high complexity and high dimensionality of this challenging problem which can not be easily solved by gradient-based methods. The results are compared to that of both a genetic algorithm (GA) and the optimal array obtained by a properly set gradient based algorithm. Comparison shows that in contrast with GA, ICA leads to the array with error probability which is very close to the optimal value. Also, being faster than GA, ICA minimises the cost function with more consistency. The total results show that ICA is a powerful and reliable tool for solving complex optimisation problems such as MBER beamforming.

imperialist competitive algorithm with Effective Assimilation Strategy: A Comparative Study on Numerical Benchmark Functions

In recent years, the nature-inspired optimization algorithms known as intelligent optimization methods have been applied successfully for solving the different problems, along with the well-known mathematical methods. One of the new evolutionary algorithms presented lately is the imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA). This algorithm is based on the behaviour of imperialists in their attempt to conquer the colonies. In this paper, the original ICA has been extended and a new version of ICA has been proposed entitled "MICA". The proposed MICA uses an efficient assimilation strategy to enhance the global exploration ability and to preserve a premature convergence. This new assimilation scheme uses the most powerful imperialist's information to update. To validate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, MICA is tested on a set of 28 non-linear benchmark functions with various dimensions and complexities. The results demonstrate that the proposed strategy enables the modified ICA to have better or at least comparable outcomes in comparison with the original ICA and the other state-of-the-art approaches at handing different types of problems.

The application of imperialist competitive algorithm for optimization of deposition rate in submerged arc welding process using TiO₂ nano particle

We used a novel optimization algorithm based on the imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) to optimize the deposition rate in the submerged arc welding (SAW) process. This algorithm offers some advantages such as simplicity, accuracy and time saving. Experiments were conducted based on a five factor, five level rotatable central composite design (RCCD) to collect welding data for deposition rate as a function of welding current, arc voltage, contact tip to plate distance, welding speed and thickness of TiO2 nanoparticles coated on the plates of mild steel. Furthermore, regression equation for deposition rate was obtained using least squares method. The regression equation as the cost function was optimized using ICA. Ultimately, the levels of input variables to achieve maximum deposition rate were obtained using ICA. Computational results indicate that the proposed algorithm is quite effective and powerful in optimizing the cost function.

A hybridized artificial neural network and imperialist competitive algorithm optimization approach for prediction of soil compaction in soil bin facility

We were inspired to furnish information concerning the promising applicability of a hybrid approach involving artificial neural networks (ANNs), with manifold network functions, and a meta-heuristic optimization algorithm for prediction of soil compaction indices. The employed network functions were the prevailed feed-forward network and the novel cascade-forward network algorithms to accommodate multivariate inputs of wheel load, tire inflation pressure, number of passage, slippage, and velocity each at three different levels for estimating the study objectives of soil compaction (i.e. penetration resistance and soil sinkage). The experimentations were carried out in a soil bin facility utilizing a single wheel-tester. Each ANN trials was developed merely and then by merging with the recently introduced evolutionary optimization technique of imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA). The results were compared on the basis of a modified performance function (MSE-REG) and coefficient of determination (R-2). Our results elucidated that hybrid ICA-ANN further succeeded to denote lower modeling error amongst which, cascade-forward network optimized by ICA managed to yield the highest quality solutions. A Modified imperialist competitive algorithm for Spoofing Attack Detection in Single-Frequency GPS Receivers

A GPS spoofing attack broadcasts counterfeit signals to resemble standard GPS satellite signals to take control of the correlation peaks of GPS signals to force the victim receiver to estimate a false position. The proposed approach is based on an intelligent dynamic algorithm focusing on distinguishing authentic and counterfeit signals. This paper presents a method based on the imperialist competitive algorithm to investigate correlation peaks of authentic and counterfeit signals. In this method, a feature vector is derived from the correlation function. When the spoofing signal tries to take control of the tracking loop, the feature values deviate. Accordingly, the cluster size of the spoofing signal increases until it becomes equal to or greater than the authentic signal size, and thus, the spoofing signal is detected. The performance of the presented detection approach is validated through simulations on real data. It reveals that the proposed method can detect spoofing attacks in 99.7% of cases.
