In this paper, principles and solving process of basic genetic algorithm are firstly summarized. Considering that in view of TSP, basic genetic algorithm is likely to converge to the local optimal solution and often converges with low speed, we absorb advantages of other intelligent algorithms, with the purpose to enhance performances of genetic algorithm for solving TSP. The crossover operation in the genetic algorithm is improved by the colonial assimilation in the discrete imperialist competition algorithm, and to enhance the diversity of the population variation, we improve the mutation operation of the genetic algorithm by combine it with the Levy flight method. Finally, we test the performance of our proposed algorithm with some typical instances in the internationally commonly used library of TSP(TSPLIB), and the results are compared with performances of basic genetic algorithm and discrete flower pollination algorithm over the same instances set. The experiment results show that our improved genetic algorithm has high quality and fast convergence speed.

Development of distribution systems lead in higher system losses and poor voltage regulation. Consequently, an efficient and effective distribution system has become more urgent and crucial. Hence, number, location and capacity of distributed generation can be optimized using evolutionary algorithm. This paper uses a hybrid optimization method based on discrete particle swarm optimization and imperialist competitive algorithm with the objective to minimize the overall cost of annual energy losses and depreciation on the cost of distributed generation in order to improve productivity. Furthermore, the Backward-Forward sweep iterative method was adopted to solve the radial load flow analysis. Simulations are carried out on 69-bus radial distribution network using Hybrid PSO approaches in order to show the accuracy as well as the efficiency of the proposed solution technique.

Using distributed generation resources (DGR) in distribution networks is increasing due to their many advantages. One of these advantages is that their capacity can be used as back up resources for supplying a portion of the load when the main source of the network is lost. In such cases, the distribution network can be divided into several islands. In each of these islands, the load outage duration and the energy not supplied (ENS) of the network can be decreased, considering its distributed generation capacity. This process affects the network restoration and increases the system's reliability. The most important feature of distributed generation for participation in load restoration is its capability of being islanded. One of the features which is essential for islanded operation of DG, is the self-starting capability of DG. This means that the generation unit is able to start without the need to an external voltage source. In this paper, a new approach based on the imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA), which is a well-known and powerful optimization algorithm, is presented for determining the optimal intentional islands in distribution networks. Then, the effect of not reconnecting distributed generation units on the cost of the energy not supplied and the boundaries of the intentional islands after occurrence of a permanent fault in the network is studied as a sensitivity analysis. The proposed approach is applied on the modified IEEE 33-bus test system with four DGs, and the results are presented.

Sugarcane is one of the profit-making crops cultivated in India. Sugarcane cultivation plays a major role in rural development by means of creating employment opportunities. Detection of problems associated with sugarcane yield at an early stage helps the decision makers to decide import and export policies. In this work, a multilevel adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) based on hybrid learning for sugarcane yield classification is proposed. In addition, clustering ANFIS parameters based on the optimization approaches Genetic algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) is also incorporated in order to enhance the accuracy of the system under study. The performance of the proposed multi level approach is compared with clustered GA, PSO and ICA .Experimental results show the superiority of the PSO approach in sugarcane yield classification.

A Bi objective uncapacitated multiple allocation p-hub median problem in public administration considering economies of scales

This paper addresses uncapacitated multiple allocation p-hub median problems, which deals with both the constructors' and the users' objectives in order to obtain an economically sustainable system. One objective is maximizing the overall investment return in road and hub construction and the users' satisfaction is translated by minimization of the overall usage cost. The problem is formulated in a way that can cover three possible policies as: Governmental requirement, constructor's break-even point and predefined make span. To make these models more pragmatic, variable discount factors are used in preference to fixed ones. Accordingly, a comprehensive discussion about discount factors and their components has been included to justify the use of variable discount factors. Then some meta-heuristic algorithms like the imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA), and an enhanced variation of a well-known multi-objective genetic algorithm called nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) are developed and applied to solve the problem. The performance of algorithms is compared to each other by utilizing some indicators such as hypervolume, e-indicator, spacing metric, and CPU time. Computational experiments emphasize the need for using stated assumptions and the variable discount factor. It also confirms the efficiency of the proposed ICA.

Criteria selection and multi-objective optimization of aircraft landing problem

Inspired by the similarities of the aircraft landing problem (ALP) and the single machine scheduling problem, we propose a criteria selection method that has been used successfully in the single machine scheduling problem to determine appropriate objective functions of ALP. First, for four different types of criteria-min-max, min-sum, completion time related, and due-dates related criteria-their corresponding physical meanings in ALP are elaborated. Then, a criteria selection method is proposed to determine several appropriate criteria, which are taken as the multi-objective while modeling ALP. Different solution algorithms, including imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA), are adopted to solve the multi-objective ALP. Finally, the performance of the proposed model and method are evaluated using a set of benchmark instances. The computational results demonstrate the efficiency of our approach for solving ALP, which can simultaneously improve punctual performance, enhance runway utilization, reduce air traffic controller workload, and maintain equity among airlines.

As flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) have come to maturity, major advances have been made in the field of power system dynamic stability and low frequency oscillation damping. Interline power flow controllers (IPFC) and static var compensators (SVC) members of FACT devices family which are used to, respectively, realize optimal power flow over transmission lines and inject reactive power to transmission lines for maintaining voltage magnitude. In this paper, following to the modeling of a single-machine infinite bus system equipped with IPFC and SVC, a power system stabilizer (PSS), without FACT devices controller, is designed. After selecting the most effectual IPFC control signal, with the use of residue theory, a coordinated control design of IPFC and SVC in absence of PSS is carried out. Moreover, the parameters of proposed controllers are optimized using imperialist competitive algorithm.

Distributed generation (DG) planning problem, i.e. finding the optimal size and location of DG units, is a Mixed Integer Non-linear Problem (MINLP). Typically finding the optimal solution of a MINLP problem is a complicated duty. This paper is focused on optimal solution of DG planning problem (DGPP) using imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) in distribution networks. DGPP is converted to an optimization problem with the multi-objective function including the minimum network power losses, the better voltage regulation and the improving voltage stability of the distribution system. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is confirmed on 33-bus and 69-bus test systems under different operating conditions. The comparative analysis is made between other evolutionary methods like GA and PSO through some performance indices to demonstrate its flexibility and effectiveness.

Techno-economical aspects of electrocoagulation optimization in three acid azo dyes’ removal comparison

This study compares the optimization models for three acid azo dyes removal by electrocoagulation (EC). First, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) models were evaluated and compared via four independent parameters, including initial pH (4–10), initial dye concentration (0–600 mg/L), current density (41.67–291.66 A/m 2 ), and reaction time (3–15 min). Then, second-order polynomial equations of dye removal and operating cost models were separately applied as benefit and cost functions in the two-objective imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA), respectively. According to the statistical analysis, not all the parameters are essential in removal efficiency for the three selected dyes. For example, the initial dye concentration and current density were the effective independent parameters in the Acid Red 18 removal model. According to the Pareto solutions, by changing the operating cost function from US$/m 3 to US$/Kg removed dye, the difference between the Pareto curve points of Acid Brown 14 and Acid Orange 7 decreased significantly. Therefore, the unit of operating cost and dye type can affect the treatment policy in practice. The two-objective optimization showed an RSM deficit in predicting some corner points as previously depicted in RSM main effect plots.

Optimal designs for linear regression models with skew-normal errors

This paper investigates optimal designs for linear regression models with skew-normal errors which provide an alternative to traditional models with symmetric normal errors and eliminate the need for data transformation. Using the maximum likelihood estimation approach, we consider various design criteria, includingD-,A-,𝐴𝑠-optimality. Equivalence theorems are provided to determine the optimality of the designs. Optimal designs for a centered parametrization model are also considered. Two examples are provided to illustrate the theoretical results. In addition, the efficiencies of the optimal designs based on skew-normal errors are compared with those based on normal errors.
