A formalism has been introduced for program description and synthesis, namely the matrix description of instructions. In this paper we put that formalism to work by associating with it computation methods based on a generalized P-function concept. algorithms are derived for the optimal implementation of programs in asynchronously organized structures.

A MATRIX FORMALISM FOR ASYNCHRONOUS implementation of algorithms

We show that well-known instructions such as if then else, fork, join, while do, can be represented as row matrices or column-matrices. We define a matrix-instruction which encompasses and generalizes the above instructions. This instruction provides us with a compact tool for describing algorithms and for synthesizing them in synchronous and asynchronous structures. We show, e.g., that the synthesis of a program by means of elementary instructions reduces to the factorization of a matrix into elementary matrices. A formalism and a computation method are introduced which generalize the author's previous work on the subject.

This paper shows that synthesizing binary decision programs (formed by means of decision instructions of the type if then else and of execution instructions of the type do) and proving theorems can be carried out by using the same approach. It is proved that the same transformations acting on P-functions can be interpreted in terms of binary program synthesis and of theorem proving. Since binary program leads to algorithmic state machine design while theorem proving leads to declarative programming, this allows us to lay a bridge between logic design and declarative languages such as Prolog.

Review and analysis of three components of the differential evolution mutation operator in MOEA/D-DE

A decomposition-based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm with a differential evolution variation operator (MOEA/D-DE) shows high performance on challenging multi-objective problems (MOPs). The DE mutation consists of three key components: a mutation strategy, an index selection method for parent individuals, and a bound-handling method. However, the configuration of the DE mutation operator that should be used for MOEA/D-DE has not been thoroughly investigated in the literature. This configuration choice confuses researchers and users of MOEA/D-DE. To address this issue, we present a review of the existing configurations of the DE mutation operator in MOEA/D-DE and systematically examine the influence of each component on the performance of MOEA/D-DE. Our review reveals that the configuration of the DE mutation operator differs depending on the source code of MOEA/D-DE. In our analysis, a total of 30 configurations (three index selection methods, two mutation strategies, and five bound-handling methods) are investigated on 16 MOPs with up to five objectives. Results show that each component significantly affects the performance of MOEA/D-DE. We also present the most suitable configuration of the DE mutation operator, which maximizes the effectiveness of MOEA/D-DE.

This article presents the fundamentals of calculation modeling of a well-known tribological triad "interaction- damage destruction of the friction surfaces" as exemplified with the plain bearings. In order to analyze the terms of interaction between the friction surface, the algorithms of finite element method are developed for the following tasks: fluid flow in the gap;contact interaction between the surfaces taking into account nonlinear properties of the "third body". Furthermore, the article describes the durability estimation scheme, which accounts for the possibility of the simultaneous occurrence of several damaging processes: caused by the bulk fatigue and caused by the wear-contact damages of different nature. The technique is based on the spatial and temporal discretization of processes of damage accumulation (various types of damage) in the object with a non-uniform field of external actions. The levels of accumulated damage caused by fatigue and by different types of wear are evaluated in separate sections of the loaded volume. The probabilistic models of these processes of damage are used. Damage of groups of sites related by certain conditions of wear compatibility and such fatigue damage characteristics as the probability of small crack occurrence (first and any subsequent) or the probability of macro-crack occurrence (first and any subsequent) are estimated on the basis of simple formulas of probability theory. The article describes the basic principles of an approximate estimate of interference of various damage processes.
