In cognitive radio wireless sensor networks (CRSN), the nodes act as secondary users. Therefore, they can access a channel whenever its primary user (PU) is absent. Thus, the nodes are assumed to be equipped with a spectrum sensing (SS) module to monitor the PU activity. In this manuscript, we focus on a clustered CRSN, where the cluster head (CH) performs SS, gathers the data, and sends it toward a central base station by adopting an ad hoc topology with in-network data aggregation (IDA) capability. In such networks, when the number of clusters increases, the consumed energy by the data transmission decreases, while the total consumed energy of SS increases, since more CHs need to perform SS before transmitting. The effect of IDA on CRSN performance is investigated in this manuscript. To select the best number of clusters, a study is derived aiming to extend the network lifespan, taking the SS requirements, the IDA effect, and the energy consumed by both SS and transmission into consideration. Furthermore, the collision rate between primary and secondary transmissions and the network latency are theoretically derived. Numerical results corroborate the efficiency of IDA to extend the network lifespan and minimize both the collision rate and the network latency.

An Energy Efficient and Reliable in-network data aggregation Scheme for WSN

data aggregation can reduce the data transmission between the nodes, and thus save the energy and extend the life of the network. Many related researches on in-network data aggregation take the generalized maximum functions. For the cases that the original packets of N nodes aggregated into M (1 < M < N) packets, it is a challenge to improve the energy efficiency and reduce the transmission delay under the transmission reliability guarantee. In this paper, a novel ring-based in-network data aggregation scheme is proposed to this problem. The network is partitioned into rings and the data aggregation is executed ring by ring from outside to inside. To ensure transmission reliability, the source or intermediate aggregating node unicasts multiple aggregated packet copies to its next hop node in the inner ring with the maximum residual energy. The reliability is higher with the more unicasting packet copies. However, more sending packets copies will lead to more additional energy cost. Besides, nodes close to the sink tend to relay more size of data packets and the energy is depleted more quickly than nodes far to the sink. Meanwhile, the nodes close to the sink need to relay the aggregated packets, which contain more information. If the number of packet copies is too small, the packets loss will greatly worse the transmission reliability. Based on this, the number of unicasting packet copies is adaptively adjusted through fuzzy logic. The proposed scheme adaptively unicasts variable number of aggregated packets copies continuously in a window according to the request transmission reliability and the imbalance of nodes energy cost. Our analysis and simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Fuzzy routing for in-network aggregation in wireless sensor networks

data aggregation is an inherent energy conservation paradigm in resource constrained wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to maximize the network lifetime. Nevertheless, the efficiency of data aggregation protocols depend on the routing structure employed. It is thus important to discover and maintain routes, especially during the selection of aggregation points and routing through these points. Therefore, the task of combining data aggregation and routing is a key challenge in WSNs. To overcome this challenge, this paper proposes a novel fuzzy routing for in-network aggregation (FRINA) algorithm for wireless sensor networks. FRINA is a distributed approach and employs fuzzy logic to construct the data aggregation tree, which addresses the issues of selecting the minimum number of aggregators, routing data from sensors to aggregators, and optimally routing the aggregated data to the sink. By utilizing an optimization approach, it tunes the parameters in the aggregator selection phase in order to improve network performance. Theoretical analysis proves that the complexity of FRINA is low. The performance of FRINA is tested under different scenarios and the experimental results corroborate that FRINA achieves optimal performance and outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of energy and network lifetime.

Energy efficiency is an important issue of wireless sensor networks. in-network data aggregation is a data collection technique that improves energy efficiency and alleviates congestive routing traffic by reducing data forwarding in wireless sensor networks. Ant-colony aggregation is a distributed algorithm that provides an intrinsic way of exploring the search space to optimize settings for optimal data aggregation. This paper aims to refine the heuristic function and the aggregation node selection method to maximize energy efficiency and to extend network lifetime. Two proposed algorithms are shown to yield longer maximum lifetime than the conventional algorithm with the same hop-count delay. One of the proposed algorithms is shown to have improved scalability than the conventional algorithm.

Enhancing Energy Saving in Smart Farming through aggregation and Partition Aware IoT Routing Protocol

Internet of things (IoT) for precision agriculture or Smart Farming (SF) is an emerging area of application. It consists essentially of deploying wireless sensor networks (WSNs), composed of IP-enabled sensor nodes, in a partitioned farmland area. When the surface, diversity, and complexity of the farm increases, the number of sensing nodes increases, generating heavy exchange of data and messages, and thus leading to network congestion, radio interference, and high energy consumption. In this work, we propose a novel routing algorithm extending the well known IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low power and Lossy networks (RPL), the standard routing protocol used for IPv6 over Low-Power Wireless Personal Area networks (6LoWPAN). It is referred to as the Partition Aware-RPL (PA-RPL) and improves the performance of the standard RPL. In contrast to RPL, the proposed technique builds a routing topology enabling efficient in-network data aggregation, hence dramatically reducing data traffic through the network. Performance analysis of a typical/realistic precision agriculture case, considering the potato pest prevention from the well-known late blight disease, shows that PA-RPL improves energy saving up to 40% compared to standard RPL.

Wireless sensor networks are an emerging technology for low-cost, unattended monitoring of a wide range of environments. Their importance has been enforced by the recent delivery of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard for the physical and MAC layers and the forthcoming ZigBee standard for the network and application layers. in-network data aggregation is a cross-layer routing technique which is essential for wireless sensor networks with a large number of nodes. Although the technique enhances energy efficiency by reducing packet transmissions, it may require routing-layer waiting time which introduces additional delays in packet delivery. In this paper, we try to find the relationship between energy and delay to achieve scheme facilitates efficient tradeoff.

Energy scavenging from ambient sources represents a promising solution for sustaining continual operation for wireless sensor networks. An energy harvesting wireless sensor network (EH-WSN) can have two node types, harvesting enabled nodes (HNs) and non-harvesting enabled nodes (NHNs). In this paper, we consider the problem of achieving network longevity in EH-WSN when in-network data aggregation is used. The aim is to construct an aggregation tree that extends the network lifetime through reducing the overhead on NHN as much as possible. Two solutions are proposed;the first model the problem using a integer linear program, whereas the second solution uses minimum directed spanning tree. The objective of these protocols is to extend the network lifetime while reducing the runtime complexity. Both solutions are evaluated through extensive simulation experiments. The obtained results demonstrate their feasibility and ability in achieving the design goals.

The area of wireless sensor network (WSN) is shrouded with the issues of routing protocol that has been witnessed in the last few decade in the research community. One of the direct influences of routing protocol is the performance of data aggregation in WSN. This paper presents a novel routing protocol that performs a cost effective, reliable and robust routing mechanism in wireless sensor network with its highly compatibility with in-network data aggregation mechanism. A simulation study is performed Matlab, where along with proposed routing algorithm, two more conventional algorithm is chosen to perform the performance comparative analysis. The performance parameters selected for simulation study shows that the proposed routing protocol is robust against the conventional routing protocol with respect to efficiency and data delivery phenomenon.

In wireless sensor networks, a serial processing algorithm browses nodes one by one and can perform different tasks such as: creating a schedule among nodes, querying or gathering data from nodes, supplying nodes with data, etc. Apart from the fact that serial algorithms totally avoid collisions, numerous recent works have confirmed that these algorithms reduce communications and considerably save energy and time in large-dense networks. Yet, due to the path construction complexity, the proposed algorithms are not optimal and their performances can be further enhanced. To do so, in the present paper, we propose a new serial processing algorithm that, in most of the cases, approximates the optimal number of hops (i.e., it requires n - 1 communications to traverse a network of n nodes). The extensive OMNeT++ simulations confirm the outperformance and efficiency of the proposal in terms of scalability and energy/time consumption.
