A Simplified Estimator for Tridimensional Localization of Single incoherently distributed source

In this paper, a simplified parametric estimator for tridimensional localization of single incoherently distributed (ID) source with small angular spread is proposed. The proposed estimator firstly obtains two sample covariance matrices using the observation data of a L-shape array. And then the secondary diagonal elements of the sample covariance matrices are used to estimate the nominal azimuth and elevation of single ID source. Our technique does not involve any spectrum searching and the eigen-decomposition of the sample covariance matrix, and thus the computational burden has been significantly alleviated. Moreover, it is also a blind estimator which doesn't require any prior knowledge about the angular power density of the ID source. Numerical examples illustrate the performance of the proposed estimator.

Low-Complexity Estimation of DOA and Angular Spread for an incoherently distributed source

In this paper, a low-complexity method is proposed for the parametric estimation of an incoherently distributed (ID) source, using a uniform linear array. Based on the Taylor approximation property of the noise-free covariance matrix, the proposed method firstly decouples the estimation of the nominal direction-of-arrival (DOA) from that of the angular spread. And then utilizing the nominal DOA estimation and a special cost function, the angular spread can be estimated by constructing one-dimensional (1-D) searching spectrum. Compared with some existing techniques, our approach requires a much lower computational cost and can exhibit a better estimation performance in a single ID source case, especially for low signal-to-noise ratio. Simulation results illustrate the performance of the proposed method.

In practical array signal processing applications, the performance of DOA (direction-of-arrival) estimation methods is known to degrade severely in the presence of angular spread. In this paper, a new approach of estimating parameter via block sparse Bayesian learning is proposed for multiple incoherently distributed sources. Unlike traditional subspace based methods, the new technique makes use of a sparse representation of the received data with a perturbed overcomplete dictionary. Specifically, after using the temporal correlation between snapshots, the central DOA is estimated by using a Bayesian learning algorithm. The new method is able to mitigate the influence of angular spread, and its performance is demonstrated from numerical simulations.

MST-ID Algorithm for Angular Parameter Estimation of incoherently distributed sources

This paper presents an effective angular parameter estimation method based on the manifold separation technique (MST) for incoherently distributed sources, named as MST-ID algorithm. In the proposed method, at first, a mathematical model is established through the first-order Taylor expansion of the steering vector, in which the nominal direction of arrival (DOA) can be decoupled from the angular spread. Then, the decoupled steering vector is divided into two sub-steering vectors with equal dimensions, and further the nominal DOA is estimated by the shift invariant structure between the sub-steering vectors. Finally, the MST is used to separate the antenna array structure from the nominal DOA in the array steering vector, such that the signal covariance matrix can be easily obtained according to the antenna array structure and the estimated nominal DOA. On this basis, a spectrum search function is given to estimate the angular spread. Compared with the previous works, the presented method can not only improve the angular parameter estimation accuracy but also be suitable for arbitrary line array structures. Theoretical analysis and simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Direction-of-arrival estimation of incoherently distributed sources using Bayesian compressive sensing

Much attention has recently been paid to incoherently distributed sources (IDSs) in this field of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of distributed sources. This study introduces the sparse reconstruction theory to DOA estimation of IDSs and proposes two DOA estimation methods of IDSs based on different sparse representations. First, the DOA estimation problem of IDSs is translated into a sparse reconstruction problem by building two parametric sparse representation models (on-grid and off-grid), which indicate the fact that the central DOAs of IDSs may be not on the discretised sampling grid. Then, based on the two different models, the corresponding sparse reconstruction problem is solved using the Bayesian compressive sensing method. Accordingly, the central DOA estimation of IDSs is also obtained. Compared with the existing methods, the authors' approach can provide a better performance under the condition of low signal-to-noise ratio, limited number of snapshots and closely spaced sources. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

A new algorithm based on ESPRIT is proposed for the estimation of central angle and angular extension of distributed sources. The central angles are estimated using TLS-ESPRIT for both incoherently distributed (ID) and coherently distributed (CD) sources. For CD sources, the extension width is estimated by constructing a one-dimensionaI (1-D) distributed source parameter estimator (DSPE) spectrum for each source. For ID sources, the extension widths are estimated using the central moments of the distribution. The algorithm can be used for sources with different angular distributions.

Central DOA Estimation of incoherently distributed Noncircular sources with Cross-Correlation Matrix

In this communication, a new method is proposed to estimate the central direction-of-arrival (DOA) of multiple incoherently distributed noncircular sources from using the received data in two closely spaced uniform linear arrays. Both the received data vector and its conjugate are utilized to estimate the extended cross-correlation (CC) matrix. Singular value decomposition is then applied on the extended CC matrix to obtain the left and right singular vectors. Subsequently, the central DOA is estimated by using the left and right singular vectors associated with the largest singular values. The effectiveness and performance of the technique are accessed through numerical results.
