This paper addresses the problem of language recognition according to stochastic attributed context-free grammars. Starting with an application as the main motivation-automatic sleep analysis-a heuristic recognizer for attributed grammars is proposed. The algorithm (an extension of a previously developed method for stochastic context-free grammars) is there used both in the process of grammar inference and on the classification of sleep macrostructure. The generality of the method features its application into other areas, namely in natural language and speech understanding.

We extend our previously proposed quasi Bayes adaptive learning framework to cope with the correlated continuous density hidden Markov models with Gaussian mixture state observation densities in which all mean vectors are assumed to be correlated and have a joint prior distribution. A successive approximation algorithm is proposed to implement the correlated mean vectors' updating. As an example, by applying the method to online speaker adaptation application, the algorithm is experimentally shown to be asymptotic convergent as well as being able to enhance the efficiency and the effectiveness of the Bayes learning by taking into account the correlation information between different models. The technique can be used to cope with the time varying nature of some acoustic and environmental variabilities, including mismatches caused by changing speakers, channels, transducers, environments and so on.

This paper describes a Higher Order Logic (HOL) theory formalizing an extended version of the Gong, Needham, Yahalom (GNY) belief logic, a theory used by software that automatically proves authentication properties of cryptographic protocols. The theory's extensions to the GNY logic include being able to specify protocol properties at intermediate stages and being able to specify protocols that use multiple encryption and hash operations, message authentication codes, computed values (e.g., hash codes) as keys, and key-exchange algorithms.

An application specific parallel defuzzification architecture is presented which is capable of performing high-speed true centre-of-gravity (CoG) computations. This architecture uses values determined by the integrals of the output membership functions (MFs), as opposed to using singleton values. This is done by storing pre-calculated values of areas and moments within embedded memory blocks. During run-time the defuzzification processor uses these individual pre-calculated values to compute the final CoG result. The design is especially well suited for families of high capacity complex programmable logic devices (CPLDs) that have a large number of I/O pins and whose ability to be reconfigured allows the application specific pre-calculated structure to be practical for real world systems.

In many control cases, we encounter the problem of tuning the coefficients of PID controllers. The often used methods such as the Ziegler-Nichols method can not guarantee to be the most effective one. This paper proposes a fuzzy PID gain conditioner algorithm (FPGA), a method based on the fuzzy control, which tunes the PID controller online. We probe into the VLSI architecture of the algorithm. The FPGA prototype implementation based on this VLSI structure is also given. Finally, a virtual control system is used to test the effectiveness of the design. The results obtained are encouraging.

In this paper, we present a new block replacement algorithm for disk caches. Our Fuzzy Block Replacement Algorithm (fuzzy block-RA) utilizes nine fuzzy rules to pick out the block to be evicted when an I/O reference causes a miss on a filled up disk cache. The decision making process is based on the age of a block and the frequency at which references are made to it. Optimization of the knowledge base to specific applications is easily possible by modifying the inference rules or tuning of the membership functions. The simulations performed using our algorithm shows that the miss rate improves with a fuzzy block-RA when compared with standard algorithms. The use of disk traces gathered from a commercial disk subsystem in the simulation ensures the practical validity of the results.

The current-mode approach for analog VLSI design in implementing a connectionist network, a binary relation inference network, to solve minimax path problems (MPP) is presented. Previous works focused on using current-mode maximum and minimum circuits as separate entities for fuzzy system applications. This paper proposes a network architecture and solution to the MPP by using the current-mode maximum and minimum circuits as basic building blocks in a uniform feedback arrangement. Conceptually, the network is able to obtain the global optimal solution in a time independent of the problem size. Practically, the current-mode connectionist network has been shown to give comparable performance to the conventional voltage-mode circuits, with a significant reduction in circuit complexity component counts, and power consumption.

During past years, several methods have been developed for learning Bayesian networks from a given database. Some of these algorithms, due to their inherent nature, are computational intensive, and others which employ a greedy search heuristic can not guarantee to obtain an I-map (independency map) of the underlying distribution of the data even if the sample size is sufficiently large. The focus of this paper is on developing efficient methods for learning Bayesian networks. A number of attributes about a Bayesian network end learning metric are identified. Based on these properties, new learning algorithms are developed which can be shown to be computationally efficient and guarantee the resulting network converging to a minimal I-map given a sufficiently large sample size.

This paper focuses on the equivariant nature of source separation: the unknown parameter of source separation is an invertible matrix, i.e. it belongs to a multiplicative group. In this instance, inference theory calls for 'equivariant' estimation. This paper discusses some consequences of equivariance with respect to implementation and performance of source separation algorithms.

This paper proposes an automatic selection method for key search algorithms. The methodology has been implemented in a system called KESE2. Key search algorithms are selected according to user's requirements through conversation controlled by inferences performed upon an evaluation table. The evaluation table has values representing fitness between search algorithms and their characteristics, or properties, to the applications. The selection algorithm presented determines candidates of key search algorithms by reducing unsuitable methods step by step. The questions to be asked to the user are driven by inferences over the restricted set. The paper also proposes an assisting facility that consists of both a supporting function and a program synthesis function. Experimental results show that by using the selection algorithm, the number of questions to be asked in order to select the appropriate key search algorithm was less than half the number of questions without inferences.
