Flexible information coding in Human Auditory Cortex during Perception, Imagery, and STM of Complex Sounds

Auditory cortex is the first cortical region of the human brain to process sounds. However, it has recently been shown that its neurons also fire in the absence of direct sensory input, during memory maintenance and imagery. This has commonly been taken to reflect neural coding of the same acoustic information as during the perception of sound. However, the results of the current study suggest that the type of information encoded in auditory cortex is highly flexible. During perception and memory maintenance, neural activity patterns are stimulus specific, reflecting individual sound properties. Auditory imagery of the same sounds evokes similar overall activity in auditory cortex as perception. However, during imagery abstracted, categorical information is encoded in the neural patterns, particularly when individuals are experiencing more vivid imagery. This highlights the necessity to move beyond traditional brain mapping inference in human neuroimaging, which assumes common regional activation implies similar mental representations.

A mechanism for graded, dynamically routable current propagation in pulse-gated synfire chains and implications for information coding

Neural oscillations can enhance feature recognition (Azouz and Gray Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 97, 8110-8115 2000), modulate interactions between neurons (Womelsdorf et al. Science, 316, 1609-01612 2007), and improve learning and memory (Markowska et al. The Journal of Neuroscience, 15, 2063-2073 1995). Numerical studies have shown that coherent spiking can give rise to windows in time during which information transfer can be enhanced in neuronal networks (Abeles Israel Journal of Medical Sciences, 18, 83-92 1982;Lisman and Idiart Science, 267, 1512-1515 1995, Salinas and Sejnowski Nature Reviews. Neuroscience, 2, 539-550 2001). Unanswered questions are: 1) What is the transfer mechanism? And 2) how well can a transfer be executed? Here, we present a pulse-based mechanism by which a graded current amplitude may be exactly propagated from one neuronal population to another. The mechanism relies on the downstream gating of mean synaptic current amplitude from one population of neurons to another via a pulse. Because transfer is pulse-based, information may be dynamically routed through a neural circuit with fixed connectivity. We demonstrate the transfer mechanism in a realistic network of spiking neurons and show that it is robust to noise in the form of pulse timing inaccuracies, random synaptic strengths and finite size effects. We also show that the mechanism is structurally robust in that it may be implemented using biologically realistic pulses. The transfer mechanism may be used as a building block for fast, complex information processing in neural circuits. We show that the mechanism naturally leads to a framework wherein neural information coding and processing can be considered as a product of linear maps under the active control of a pulse generator. The humanity of coding design for human-machine display interface in the product design is studied by experimental method. During the experiment, three character types, three eye distances from the display interface, five character sizes are adopted. The correct rate and reaction time are chosen as the evaluation indexes. Analyzed by ANOVA, mathematical models of the information coding are established. Mathematical models proposed in this paper can be widely applied for man-machine display interface coding design, and provide theoretical basis for different kinds of products design.

To our knowledge, there is no paper in the open literature dealing with the topic in the title. This paper provides an information coding Ontology Model (ICOM) to shield semantic heterogeneous of information resources, and to achieve information integration. Sections 1 and 2 of the full paper present the information coding ontology model and its formal definition, then design the mapping framework of the information coding ontology model. Section 3 discusses the mapping algorithm of the information coding ontology model from three aspects: semantic similarity analysis, obtaining semantic similarity algorithm, and semantic mapping and its implementation. Section 4 gives Fig. 7 as the mapping flow chart of the information coding ontology model and uses a numerical example to illustrate the four-step procedure of the mapping implementation process.

A technology of ontological information coding was researched to be applied to information integration of manufacturing enterprises. The information resource was organized by classification of "information domains", and the hierarchical structure of ontological information coding system was constructed by analyzing relationship of sub-domains and information objects. Relationships between key attributes and accessorial attributes were organized by ontology, and a model of ontological information coding, which was validated by example of "Material" was formed. At last, a frame of information integration based on ontological information coding was designed with its actualizing mechanism expatiated.

In order to improve the interactive performance of the complex system, the usability evaluation is carried out. In this paper, the usability of the existing complex system interface was evaluated, and the optimization strategy was studied based on the information encoding. The results were analyzed through eye movement experiments. The performance of each task in the information interface after information coding optimization was better than that of the previous interface. It had different degrees of advantages in task completion time and task completion rate. The degree of information coding optimization of the interface was negatively correlated with the task completion time. The degree of optimization of interface information coding is positively correlated with click efficiency. The higher the degree of optimization, the higher the click efficiency.

Quality Control of Mass-Encoded Nanodevices by Compartmented DNA Origami Frames for Precision information coding and Logic Mapping

Encoded nanostructures afford an ideal platform carrying multi-channel signal components for multiplexed assay and information security. However, with the demand on exclusivity and reproducibility of coding signals, precise control on the structure and composition of nanomaterials featuring fully distinguishable signals remains challenging. By using the multiplexing capability of mass spectrometry (MS) and spatial addressability of DNA origami nanostructures, we herein propose a quality control methodology for constructing mass-encoded nanodevices (namely MNTs-TDOFs) in the scaffold of compartmented tetrahedral DNA origami frames (TDOFs), in which the arrangement and stoichiometry of four types of mass nanotags (MNTs) can be finely regulated and customized to generate characteristic MS patterns. The programmability of combinatorial MNTs and orthogonality of individual compartments allows further evolution of MNTs-TDOFs to static tagging agents and dynamic nanoprobes for labeling and sensing of multiple targets. More importantly, structure control at single TDOF level ensures the constancy of prescribed MS outputs, by which a high-capacity coding system was established for secure information encryption and decryption. In addition to the multiplexed outputs in parallel, the nanodevices could also map logic circuits with interconnected complexity and logic events of c-Met recognition and dimerization on cell surface for signaling regulation by MS interrogation. We present mass-encoded nanodevices in which the arrangement and stoichiometry of mass nanotags are prescribed in compartmented DNA origami frames to generate characteristic mass spectra with multiple well-defined signal intensities. The results of mathematical simulation of propagation of optical signals in high-bit-rate dispersion-controlled fibreoptic communication lines are presented. information was coded by using the return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ DPSK) format to modulate an optical signal. A number of particular configurations of optical communication lines are optimised in terms of the bit error rate (BER). It is shown that the signal propagation range considerably increases compared to that in the case of a standard return-to-zero on-off keying (RZ OOK) format.

Photo-induced multi-color fluorescent hydrogels for optical information coding and encryption

In this study, we proposed a method to prepare multi-color fluorescent hydrogels with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the cross-linking network and 7-(6-carboxylpentoxy)-4-methylcoumarin (CPMC), N-ethoxyhexanoate-3,3dimethyl-6-nitro-indolinspiropyran (SPCOOH) and 2 & PRIME;,7 & PRIME;-dichlorofluorescein (DCF) were introduced to the system. Due to the hydroxyl group in PVA can form a reversible borate bond with borax, the hydrogel could be combined with each other through this chemical bond, thus hydrogels possess reversible cross-linking property and programmable property. The introduction of CPMC, SPCOOH and DCF into the hydrogel could give the hydrogel different photo-response properties. Under UV light irradiation, PVA-CPMC, PVA-CPMC/DCF, PVASPCOOH and PVA/DCF hydrogels could emit blue, cyan, pink purple and green fluorescence respectively. In addition, PVA/DCF and PVA-CPMC/DCF hydrogels could emit green fluorescence under 505 nm light irradiation. Based on the various properties of hydrogels, we respectively demonstrated the application of hydrogels in the fields of two-dimensional information encryption, three-dimensional information encryption, threedimensional information coding and anti-counterfeiting, which can achieve the expected results. Therefore, multi-color fluorescent hydrogels may have potential applications in information encryption, information coding, flexible display and other fields.

Increased demands on more efficient information handling can be met with cheap computers and electronic communication. However, information structure and information coding is often relatively underdeveloped, particularly for more complex projects. The proposed system for structuring and coding, with main codes consistently connected to three concepts, activities, resources and components, can give the logic flexibility and power which is needed for a more efficient information handling in 'learning' organizations, striving at reduced lead times, more efficient experience feedback, decentralization and competence development.
