Mass balance of the Antarctic Ice Sheet from 2013 to 2018 estimated using the input-output method with updated remote sensing products

The Antarctic Ice Sheet(AIS)has been losing ice mass and contributing to the rise in the global sea-level(GSL)for the last 4 decades,as quantified by using satellite *** developed a framework for implementing the state-of-the-art input-output(IO)method that has the advantage of explicit estimation of the mass balance of individual glaciers,basins and the *** estimated the mass balance of the AIS from 2013 to 2018 using improved observations and updated datasets recently made available,including annual ice flow velocity maps from the Inter-mission Time Series of Land Ice Velocity and Elevation(ITS_LIVE)dataset,the Bed Machine and the Princess Elizabeth Land(PEL)Earth System Science Data(ESSD)datasets,and the surface mass balance from the RACMO 2.3 *** example,using the improved ice thickness data,the proposed method for ice discharge estimation enables a 10%reduction of uncertainty in ice *** the period of 2013–2018,an ice discharge acceleration of 6.9±6.5 Gt yr^(–2)in West Antarctica(WA)was detected,which contributed significantly to the estimated mass loss of~1069 Gt(–178.2±108.9 Gt yr^(–1))in the *** the other hand,Queen Maud Land,East Antarctica(EA),showed clearly a mass gain rate of 56.0±10.0 Gt yr^(–1)due to the regional increase in surface mass *** results extended the estimation period by 3 years in comparison to the published study using the same annual velocity maps from the ITS_LIVE ***,our results,along with those from other studies using the IO method,reassures the acceleration of recent mass loss in WA and Wilkes Land in EA,which are caused by glacier thinning and ice shelf basal *** with the long-term mass balance record since 1979,our results suggest that the mass loss in AIS accelerated in the last *** developed framework can be modified for mass balance estimation of the AIS or for other ice sheets by using velocity maps from other satellite data or from differen

Analysis of water use characteristics in industrial sectors in Beijing based on an input-output method

Beijing is a megalopolis with a serious water shortage that has been further exacerbated by an unreasonable industrial water structure. This article uses an input-output method to calculate the water use coefficients in each industrial sector in Beijing and analyses the water use characteristics of the various industrial sectors. Then, an industry association index that represents the influence and sensitivity of sectors is combined with the water use characteristics to readjust the industrial structure with the objectives of water conservation and sustainable economic development. The results indicate that the agricultural water use coefficient is the highest and that the coefficients are generally higher for sectors in secondary industry than for those in tertiary industry. In addition, all coefficients display a downward trend. The water use multipliers vary widely among sectors. In secondary industry during the study period, the number of high water use sectors remained stable, the number of potentially high water use sectors increased and the number of general water use sectors decreased. A comprehensive analysis of the water use characteristics and industrial structure correlations could provide a reference for the optimal allocation of water resources.

This paper uses input-output method to analyze the Industrial Correlation and Industrial Ripple Effect of China textile industry based on input-output table. The results show that the growth rate of total output in textile industry slowed down in the recent 10 years. The Impact Coefficient Index and Sensitivity Coefficient Index of domestic textile industry are higher than the average index value of all the social industries. China textile industry can be considered as a model. industry sector, characterized by material orientation and low product added value.

This research defines the key sectors driving China's energy consumption and CO₂ emissions from the input-output relationship and demand elasticity. This method allows us to analyze the correlation of energy consumption and CO₂ emissions with economic activities of various sectors, and reveal which sectors deserve more attention as Chinese Government shapes appropriate policies for energy conservation and carbon emissions reduction. The results indicate that the key sectors in China's economic system not only drive energy consumption and CO₂ emissions of other sectors, but also consume substantial fossil energy and emit tremendous CO₂ stimulated by the demand from other sectors. Therefore, they should be paid close attention by Chinese government, especially the sectors of Manufacture of Basic Chemicals, Construction of Buildings, Wholesale and Retail Trade, Transport via Road, and Real Estate. In addition, the case study shows that China's road transportation experiences extensive developing mode and effective measures should be taken to help achieve its low-carbon development due to its dominant role in the whole transportation sector. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

The indirect energy consumption and CO₂ emission caused by household consumption in China: an analysis based on the input-output method

In recent decades, China's rapid economy development has been coupling with the steadily increasing household consumption, which, in turn, leads to ever-growing energy consumption and CO2 emission. With a focus on the decade of 2000-2010, this study examines the energy consumption and CO2 emission caused by household consumption using the input-output method, as well as the influencing factors of the indirect CO2 emission. The results show that, first, the indirect energy consumption and CO2 emission appear the main parts of total energy consumption and CO2 emission caused by household consumption, accounting for 69%-77% and 77%-84%, respectively. Second, the indirect CO2 emission indicates an increasing trend mainly driven by per capita household consumption and energy intensity. Finally, the five sectors with relatively higher direct or total CO2 emission intensity are the key sectors for reducing CO2 emission in China, i.e., (1) Production and Distribution of Electric Power and Heat Power (PDEH), (2) Smelting and Pressing of Metals (SPM), (3) Processing of Petroleum, Coking, Processing of Nuclear Fuel (PPCPN), (4) Manufacture of Non-metallic Mineral Products (MNM), and (5) Manufacture of Chemical Materials (MCM). The fault detection (FD) problem for discrete-time fuzzy networked systems with time-varying delay and multiple packet losses is investigated in this paper. The communication links between the plant and the FD filter (FDF) are assumed to be imperfect, and the missing probability is governed by an individual random variable satisfying a certain probabilistic distribution over the interval [0 1]. The discrete-time delayed fuzzy networked system is first transformed into the form of interconnect ion of two subsystems by applying an input-output method and a two-term approximation approach, which are employed to approximate the time-varying delay. Our attention is focused on the design of fuzzy FDF (FFDF) such that, for all data missing conditions, the overall FD dynamics are input-output stable in mean square and preserves a guaranteed performance. Sufficient conditions are first established via H-infinity performance analysis for the existence of the desired FFDF;meanwhile, the corresponding solvability conditions for the desired FFDF gains are characterised in terms of the feasibility of a convex optimisation problem. Moreover, we show that the obtained criteria based on the input-output approach can also be established by applying the direct Lyapunov method to the original time-delay systems. Finally, simulation examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

Forecasting the delayed impact of energy price fluctuations on China's general prices based on a temporal input-output approach

The Chinese economy is facing the impact of soaring energy prices, including the prices of coal, electricity and oil. The impacts of energy price fluctuations on general prices have a significant delayed effect. A novel pricetemporal input-output (I-O) method is proposed to measure these delayed effects. A series of time-delay functions caused by a single price fluctuation and continuous price fluctuations is obtained through polynomial fitting. Then, the impact of price regulation and price delay adjustment on the delayed effect is further examined. Finally, China's latest 2017 I-O table, 4186 listed companies, and actual oil price adjustment data for 2020 are used to conduct empirical research. The delayed effect of oil, coal, electricity and gas price fluctuations on general prices and price indices, such as the consumer price index (CPI) and producer price index (PPI), are comprehensively investigated, and a corresponding time-delay ratio table for rapid querying is provided. The results indicate that the delayed impact of energy price fluctuations on the prices of various sectors lasts for half a year or even longer;additionally, these effects are very different. Logistics prices and the PPI are the most affected by oil price fluctuations, while trade prices and the CPI are the least affected by oil price fluctuations. China's oil price adjustments in 2020 led to a decline in general prices, and prices rebounded at the end of the year. Price regulation, especially electricity price regulation, reduces the impact of energy price fluctuations on general prices, and price delay adjustments extend the length of the time delay. This study can help improve how governments and enterprises address the impact of energy price fluctuations.

A method for economic input-output social impact analysis with application to US advanced manufacturing

Industrial sustainability performance has, up until recently, been mainly based on a combination of economic and environmental measures. The social dimension of sustainability performance remains largely unknown. The lack of understanding of social performance, i.e., how stakeholder needs are impacted by industrial production, limits the capacity of decision makers to pursue fully informed choices. Fortunately, large quantities of economic and social data exist in the public domain. The vast economic and social data enable the creation of industry-related social impact metrics that can describe how industry directly affects society. However, assessing social impacts in an economy requires a multidisciplinary modeling approach. The proposed method, economic input-output social impact assessment, is developed to integrate economic production with two new social impact metrics based on employee/worker-needs: Cost Of Injuries identifies employee safety/security needs, and Employees below a Living Wage identifies worker basic needs. The model is applied using a case study that introduces the economically important and technologically innovative Advanced Manufacturing cluster of industries in the United States. In 2012, Advanced Manufacturing represented over 39% of U.S. manufacturing output and 7.8%, or $2.25 trillion. of the U.S. total economic output ranking 6th in the total economy. As a result of the model, Advanced Manufacturing was attributed 8.5%, or $13 billion, for the total national social impacts of Cost Of Injuries, ranking 5th in the U.S. economy. Advanced Manufacturing was also attributed 3.5%, or 3 million employees, for the total national social impacts of Employees below a Living Wage, ranking 12th out of the 16 economic sectors studied. The economic input-output social impact assessment method is demonstrated to provide a measurable path forward to evaluate the social performance of industries. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd.
