Research on the Measurement of Digitalization on the Integration of China's Manufacturing Industry into the RCEP Regional Value Chain

In this paper, the industry classification of digital economy is determined, the comprehensive index framework of digital economy development level in China is constructed, and the input-output analysis method and index method are used to measure the digital investment status of manufacturing industry in China. At the same time, based on the realistic demand that China's manufacturing industry needs to climb the regional value chain, this paper constructs the forward participation index, backward participation index, regional value chain position index, and regional value chain Balassa, and analyzes the current situation of China's manufacturing industry in RCEP region. Construct a semi-parametric additive model to explore the impact of digital investment on China's manufacturing industry's participation in the RCEP regional value chain. In addition, this paper uses the community analysis method to build the RCEP regional manufacturing digital input trade network, and comprehensively evaluates the trade network pattern of digital input from multiple dimensions. The results show that: (1) the digital investment in China's manufacturing industry is increasing year by year. (2) The indicators of manufacturing industry's participation in RCEP regional value chain show a fluctuating situation, which is generally consistent with China's economic development. (3) Within a certain range, digital investment will promote the participation of China's manufacturing industry in the RCEP regional value chain. China is gradually becoming an important participant in RCEP regional trade. According to the corresponding measurement results, it provides policy suggestions for the deep integration of China's manufacturing industry and digital economy.

Inequity of value-added gains and embodied carbon emissions in North-South trade during the restructuring of global value chains

In recent years, the restructuring of global value chains (GVCs) has led to significant transformations in production activities and the associated carbon emissions in both developed countries (referred to as Northern countries) and developing countries (referred to as Southern countries). This study calculates and compares the value-added and carbon emissions transfer of North-South trade from 2004 to 2017 based on a multiregional input-output table. Before the restructuring of GVCs, the value-added in North-South trade increased rapidly. Accordingly, the carbon emissions intensity of Southern countries' exports decreased significantly, and the inequity of value-added and carbon emissions in North-South trade improved. After 2011, with the restructuring of GVCs, the carbon emissions intensity of exports in the Southern regions, except for East and South Asia, has increased, and the inequity of North-South trade has not decreased further. According to the results of the structural decomposition analysis, this is mainly due to the gradual reduction in the positive driving effect of domestic carbon emissions intensity. It is noteworthy that in recent years, the trade-related effects of intermediate products closely related to GVCs have begun playing a positive role in the decline of the carbon emissions intensity of exports;however, considerable room remains for their improvement.

Migration of manufacturing industries and transfer of carbon emissions embodied in trade: empirical evidence from China and Thailand

At present, China's carbon emissions rank first in the world, which not only brings huge challenges to the sustainable development of China's economy, but also brings more pressure from public opinion in the international community. With the outward migration of China's manufacturing industries to Southeast Asia, the carbon emissions embodied in trade has also been transferred. These trends provide a good opportunity to analyze the characteristics of transnational industrial restructuring and spatial structure transformation of carbon emissions between China and Southeast Asian countries. In 2020, ASEAN has become China's largest trading partner, and Thailand, due to its unique industrial structure and investment environment, will surely become one of the main ASEAN countries to undertake the transfer of China's manufacturing industry. Over the years, the shift of carbon emissions by the continuous transfer of a large number of basic manufacturing industries from China to Thailand promoted the release of China's carbon emission pressure. In this article, on the basis of the data of import and export commodities between China and Thailand from 2012 to 2017, the input-output model is carried out to analyze the energy consumption of China's various industries, and three periods, namely 2012, 2015, and 2017, are used to be key periods to calculate the embodied carbon of China's manufacturing migration and Sino-Thailand trade. The empirical results show that the transfer of China's manufacturing to Thailand from 2012 to 2017 has continued to rise. The transfer of Chinese manufacturing to Thailand is positively correlated with the carbon emissions of trade between the two countries, which has promoted the relief of China's pressure on energy conservation and emission reduction. Value added and employment effects in Finland when wood fibre is substituted for plastic in food packaging-A case study

In the food and beverage industry, the development of new bio-based packaging materials and films is lively nowadays, and in the future, these materials will increasingly replace the current plastic-based packaging solutions. This demand, however, will inevitably have an impact on wood raw material availability. Using cold cuts and chocolate bars as pilot food package product cases and input-output analysis, this study evaluates projected roundwood need, value added, and employment in Finland when certain volumes of packaging materials are converted from traditional plastic to wood fibre-based. The results indicated that the substitution effects both for value added and employment remained rather small. In the cases studied, the substitution effect on consumption of softwood pulpwood was only a few thousand cubic meters over bark, whereas the reduction of plastics was up to 3,000 tonnes. Economic effects, however, would be highly significant if production were scaled to several different food packages, especially from the viewpoint of value added. More research is clearly needed to analyse economic, environmental, and social aspects on a larger scale, as well as pros and cons when plastic is replaced by alternative fibre-based materials in food packaging.

Spread efficiency of energy demand in the industrial chain: a perspective from economic distance

This paper investigates the spread efficiency of energy demand in the industrial chain based on the input-output method. The concept of intersectoral economic distance and spread efficiency was introduced to formulate the energy demand spread functions. Then, an empirical study was conducted based on China's 2017 input-output data and nearly 3,500 companies were listed in the Chinese A-share market. The results show that the sectoral average spread time is 32.75 days. Manufacturing plays a central role in the spread of energy demand. In the short term, the logistics sector has the greatest pulling effect on energy demand, while the electric power sector has the greatest impact on energy demand in the long term. Energy demand caused by exports is greater than consumption and investment. Finally, sectoral economic distances and actual spread functions for 9 main energy sources are provided to help us better predict energy demand.

The optimal industrial carbon tax for China under carbon intensity constraints: a dynamic input-output optimization model

To reduce carbon emissions, the Chinese government is considering introducing a differentiated industrial carbon tax on enterprises outside the carbon trading market in the future. An efficient carbon tax must consider not only how carbon taxes impact the current economy but also how the size of the tax should be adjusted across time due to external changes. To calculate the optimal industrial carbon tax for China which is subject to certain constraints, this paper investigates the economic and environmental effects of four possible industrial carbon tax rate models under carbon intensity constraints from 2021 to 2030 by a dynamic input-output optimization model. The results show that the dynamic tax rate model leads to larger fluctuations in GDP growth than the other tax models, with a low initial tax rate in the beginning and a high tax rate exceeding yen 180/t in 2030. Second, a large quantity of capital stock is distributed across the energy-intensive industries, which leads the existing capital investment structure to be path-dependent. This offsets the performance of carbon taxes. Third, indirect energy-intensive industries such as construction and transport are insensitive to the industrial carbon tax. Finally, comparing the impacts of the four tax rate models, the optimal industrial carbon tax for China is found to be a fixed differentiated tax rate, in which energy-intensive sectors are taxed yen 75/t and low-carbon sectors are taxed yen 50/t.

A study of CO2 emissions in China's domestic construction industry based on non-competitive input-output

To accurately calculate the actual CO2 emissions of China's domestic construction industry (CDC) under the influence of international trade factors, an improved import proportion method (IIPM) was suggested in this paper based on the non-competitive input-output (NC-IO) table in 2017. The NC-IO table of 10 years from 2010 to 2019 was complemented in combination with the Row arrange series (RAS) method, and the CO2 emissions of the CDC in the 10 years were calculated by the input-output (I-O) method. The results reveal that CO2 emissions of the CDC keep increasing, with an annual increase of 6.57%, and the proportion thereof to domestic CO2 emissions has increased from 17.00% to 22.52%, although the carbon intensity has decreased by 39.6%. On this basis, by Structural decomposition analysis (SDA) model analysis, the change in CO2 emission influencing factors in the past 10 years was analyzed from the perspective of CO2 emissions factor, industrial structure, and domestic final demand. The results indicate that the IIPMismore accurate and the calculation ismore reliable based on 5 indicators. Additionally, the optimization of the industrial structure after 2015 has had a significant dampening effect, and the final demand has played an absolute leading role in improving CO2 emissions. From the perspective of final demand, the current emission reduction measures in the CDC, including prefabricated buildings, are not satisfactorily effective, and more efforts need to be made in emission reduction. Furthermore, the contradiction between the growth of final demand and the demand for CO2 emissions reduction is prominent. (C) 2022 Institution of Chemical Engineers. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Review of Research on the Impact of Changes Resulting from the Hard Coal Mining Sector in Poland on the GDP Value

Energy transition is one of the main objectives of the European Union. Significant changes will mainly affect countries in which significant modifications will have to be made to their energy sources. The process will involve high investment in infrastructure and additional costs of the transformation, such as reduced production (which may affect the GDP value) in the economic sectors involved in the process. The aim of this article is to provide the energy transition community, namely the national economy in general and those involved in planning for structural change in particular, with the key lessons and challenges in researching the impact of production changes in the mining sector. This article also shows the relevance of the mining sector in the economy. Within this area, particular attention is given to the following issues: the impact of economic sectors on the country's GDP (gross domestic product);the identification of key sectors of the economy using the input-output method;the contribution of coal mining and the mining industry to Poland's GDP;an analysis of changes in the structure of Poland's economy using the input-output method;and the use of the input-output method in the context of changing/reducing the supply of economic sectors.

Water and Energy Conservation across Provinces and Sectors in China: Based on a Complex Network Perspective

Previous studies on the water-energy nexus mainly focused on the calculation and comparison of resource consumption at the national or regional level, lacking interprovincial sector-sector transfer analysis. In this study, the intensity of water and energy consumption of various sectors in China was calculated, the key nodes and paths of resource networks were identified, and countermeasures for resource conservation were proposed from the new perspective of the "dual saving" and "bidirectional saving" of water and energy. The results showed that the metallurgical industry (Me) in Jiangsu and the chemical industry (Ch) in Hebei and Jiangsu had high node strength in the water and energy network and were key sectors in China with "dual saving" effects of water and energy. The construction industry, Ch, Me in Jiangsu, electricity and hot water production and supply industry in Beijing, and Me in Hebei had high node strength in the water-related energy network and energy-related water network, significantly supporting the "bidirectional saving" effect of water and energy in China. The electrical equipment industry (El) in Jiangsu -> El in Zhejiang, El in Zhejiang -> El in Shanghai frequently appeared in key paths, which could effectively reduce the resource consumption of the entire network.
