System flow centrality index for evaluating the influence of a given system element in a network graph

This paper introduces a novel System Flow Centrality (SFC) index for evaluating node importance in network graphs, with a specific focus on system architecture analysis. Unlike traditional centrality measures such as betweenness centrality (BC), the SFC index considers all system paths and cycles, providing a more comprehensive assessment of a node's influence within the network. We present both a basic SFC algorithm and an enhanced version that incorporates system element classification, allowing for more nuanced analysis of component properties. The proposed index is validated through application to various network topologies, including common IEEE bus system configurations and a real-world medical motor driver architecture. Comparative analysis with established centrality measures demonstrates the SFC index's superior performance in identifying critical nodes, particularly in complex and asymmetric network structures. The SFC index shows promise as a valuable tool for multidisciplinary project teams, offering potential benefits in risk assessment, resource allocation, quality management optimization, and decision-making processes across diverse applications. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on network analysis and system architecture evaluation, providing a more accurate and system-oriented approach to quantifying node importance in complex networks.

Secure and privacy-preserving sharing of personal health records with multi-party pre-authorization verification

Wireless communications play an important role in ensuring ease of access to shared electronic health records (EHR) across health service providers which is essential and significant for prompt patients' care, especially in cases of emergency medical conditions. With the need to support anytime, anywhere access to, potentially bandwidth hungry, medical records, electronic healthcare applications will continue to benefit from advanced wireless network technologies such as 5G and beyond. With sharing, it is crucial to provide patients with security and privacy guarantees, and allow them to certain control of access to their data. Existing solutions mostly assume that patients are available to authorize requests to access their EHR, which is impractical as the patient may be unconscious. This paper proposes a secure and privacy protecting protocol whereby the patient can pre-delegate the authorization for the access of his/her EHR. Our patient(user)-centric proposal combines Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) concepts and model with Secure Multi-party Computation (SMPC) and Threshold Cryptography (TC) to enable secure identity and authorization verification. A block cipher encryption sharing approach is adopted for the threshold SMPC which extends the AES-GCM symmetric encryption model into a full-fledged cryptographic platform. Two mechanisms are implemented for the block cipher encryption, namely XOR and Cascade, and experiments are conducted to compare them. We conclude that the XOR mechanism can scale for larger thresholds, while Cascade performed better for a lower threshold (<= 3). This paper also performs a threat analysis of the protocol and approach, and validates its correctness and complexity. We conclude that the approach can achieve the security and privacy protection of the patient's personal EHR, as well as the autonomy of the patient to control the authorization for the access and sharing.

Next-generation information technologies will process unprecedented amounts of loosely structured data that overwhelm existing computing systems. N3XT improves the energy efficiency of abundant-data applications 1,000-fold by using new logic and memory technologies, 3D integration with fine-grained connectivity, and new architectures for computation immersed in memory.

Embedded system design using formal model refinement: An approach based on the combined use of UML and the B language

The approach proposed in this paper introduces a hardware/software co-design framework for developing complex embedded systems. The method relies on formal proof of system properties at every phase of the co-design cycle. The key concept is the combined use of UML and the B language for system modeling and design, and the seamless transition from UML specifications to system descriptions in B. The final system prototype emerges from correct-by-construction subsystems described in the B language;the hardware components are translated in VHDL/SystemC, while for the software components C/C++ is used. The outcome is a formally proven correct system implementation. The efficiency of the proposed method is exhibited through the design of a case study from the telecommunication domain.

Model-based systems engineering necessitates effective collaboration between different collaborators, teams, and stakeholders. Traditional approaches used for managing concurrent code-based development don’t naturally extend to collaborative modeling, which implies novel challenges. Owing to the increasing amount of computation in electromechanical devices, the role of software architect is often found in embedded-systems development. However, because computer scientists usually have limited knowledge of embedded-systems concepts such as controllers, actuators, and buses, embedded-software architects are often engineers with no education in software architecture basics, which is normally a topic in computer science courses. In these environments, serious architectural problems can occur, such as contradictory architecture decisions and inconsistencies between the architecture design and the architecture drivers. This article discusses the current profile of embedded-software architects, characteristics of embedded architectures designed by architects with no computer science background, and the shortcomings of architects whose knowledge is limited to information systems. The authors also discuss how to overcome these challenges.

Although the benefits of service orientation are prevalent in literature, a review, analysis, and evaluation of the 30 existing service analysis approaches presented in this paper have shown that a comprehensive approach to the identification and analysis of both business and supporting software services is missing. Based on this evaluation of existing approaches and additional sources, we close this gap by proposing an integrated, consolidated approach to business and software service analysis that combines and extends the strengths of the examined methodologies.

A Software Suite for Efficient Use of the European Qualifications Framework in Online and Blended Courses

Since introduction of the European qualifications framework (EQF) as one instrument to bridge from learning institutions to competence driven lifelong learning, it remains a challenge for instructors and teachers in higher education to make efficient use of this framework for designing, monitoring, and managing their lessons. This paper presents a software suite for enabling teachers to make better use of EQF in their teaching. The software suite extends course design based on well-defined learning outcomes, monitoring performance and competence acquisition according to the EQF levels, assessment using scoring rubrics of EQF levels and competences in a 360-degree feedback, as well as visualizations of learning analytics and open student models in dashboards for different social perspectives in social planes. This paper includes a case study with 20 teachers who used the software suite in all phases of the course lifecycle for three programming courses. The results show that integrated applications for adopting the EQF in teaching practice are strongly needed. These results also show that the suite can assist teachers in creating contextual awareness, kindling reflection, understanding students and course progress, and inferring patterns of success and failure in competences development.
