Three-dimensional vision-based sensing of GTAW: a review

Automated and robotic welding is now widely used in manufacturing industry. The control of the welding process plays a crucial role in producing quality welds in automated and robotic welding where the assistance from skilled welders is no longer available. In gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) which is the primary arc welding process for precision joining of metals, the weld pool is the major source of information that can be used to assure the production of desired weld penetration which is the most critical factor determining the weld integrity. To meet this challenge, various sensing technologies have been proposed/studied to sense and obtain the feedback for the weld pool state. This paper summarizes the researches on weld pool state sensing: conventional sensing technologies, vision sensing technology, and multi-sensor information fusion technology, with emphasis on the analysis of three-dimensional vision sensing methods. And three-dimensional vision sensing, multi-sensor technology, intelligent modeling, and effective commercial product development show the future trends of GTAW penetration sensing.

Intermittent fault diagnosis in connector components based on arc wave characteristics

Intermittent faults are widely present in aviation electronic devices, especially in various electrical connectors. It is usually hard to diagnose the source of the intermittent faults, which brings a huge challenge to the repair and maintenance of equipment. This paper focuses on the intermittent faults in typical aviation electrical connectors activated by shock test. The transient arc wave is observed on a nanosecond scale during the occurrence of the intermittent faults. An arc signal model is constructed to analyze the impact factors of the signal. Based on the arc wave characteristics, further intermittent fault diagnostic analyses are conducted on four types of connector components: damaged solder joints, cracked pin connections, loose wire connections and worn electrical connectors. The effective arc wave components of the raw signals are extracted using Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD), and a comparison is made between traditional diagnostic method and CNN-based deep learning method. The results show that the combination of VMD-CNN-SVM achieves the optimal diagnostic effect. The diagnostic results reflect that the proposed arc signal features are suitable for diagnosing intermittent faults in connector components.

A safe operation strategy for HTS-SMES magnets based on state prediction

The HTS-SMES magnets will inevitably produce AC loss during the charging and discharging process. The ex-istence of AC loss will cause the temperature of the magnets to rise, and then the critical current of the magnets will drop. The excessive temperature rise may even make the magnets damage. The temperature rise in the dynamic process of the HTS magnets is a key parameter that affects the safe and stable operation of the magnets. However, the detection of the temperature rise is delayed, so it is not feasible to monitor and protect the magnets by measuring the temperature. In this paper, a safe operation strategy for HTS-SMES magnets based on state prediction is proposed. By calculating the AC loss and temperature of the magnets at different initial tempera-ture, initial current, charging and discharging rate, a state database of the magnets is established. The AC loss and temperature of the magnets will be predicted by intelligent algorithms at the power demand stage of the power system to judge the state of the magnets. If the critical value is exceeded, the protection system will act. This is of great significance for ensuring the safe and stable operation of the HTS-SMES magnets.

Dynamic thermal management for industrial waste heat recovery based on phase change material thermal storage

To effectively utilize waste heat resulted in industrial production processes, this study investigates the dynamic thermal management using phase change material (PCM) thermal storage technique for the heat recovery system. The heat transfer process of a tube-type PCM storage module is analyzed and the dynamic model is developed for the optimization of system operation. The flag to indicate different working modes of the storage module is introduced as a system decision variable, which is used in developing an intelligent algorithm adopting biogeography-based optimization method for dynamic control of the system. The effectiveness of the dynamic model is verified via real demonstration experimental tests and the maximum relative error is 5.47%. The validation of the algorithm and evaluation of the dynamic thermal management are carried out by applications in the heat recovery of the steel sintering process. The influences of phase change enthalpy on the system performance are further studied to highlight the role of latent heat in thermal management. Results show that the proportions of fuel consumed in the off, flat and high peak energy utilization sections are optimized from the original 1:6.95:21.71 to 1:2.57:7.02 through the peak shaving and the total consumption of fuel per day is decreased from 6.81 t to 6.34 t. When the phase change enthalpy is reduced from 103 kJ kg(-1) to 1 kJ kg(-1), the decrease of the energy recovered by the PCM modules leads to the additional 0.06 t fuel consumption per day.

Theoretical, numerical, and experimental studies on controlled synchronization strategy of four-axis variable trajectory equal-thickness screen

The four-axis variable trajectory equal-thickness screen (FAVTETS) achieves equal-thickness screening by appropriate excitation force generated by four eccentric rotors in synchronized motion. The forced synchronization exciter is characterized by an unsatisfactory synchronization effect due to the wear of transmission parts. Hence, in this paper, the four-axis controlled synchronization of FAVTETS is investigated, and an intelligent control system is proposed. Firstly, research is conducted on the variable trajectory characteristics of FAVTETS. Next, the sliding mode, fuzzy, and PID controllers are designed and compared to obtain an ideal control effect. Moreover, the influence of torsional stiffness of flexible coupling on control accuracy is considered. The results show that the sliding mode controller has a good control effect. Based on the aforementioned, the simulation model of a four-axis controlled synchronization structure is established via MATLAB/Simulink. Finally, Labview is employed to design the four-axis controlled synchronization software system. Then, the physical experiment is carried out. The four-axis controlled synchronization and vibration trajectory measurement results verify the effectiveness and robustness of the intelligent control system.

Evaluation method for moisture content of oil-paper insulation based on segmented frequency domain spectroscopy: From curve fitting to machine learning

In recent years, frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) is often used to evaluate oil paper insulation state in power transformer bushing. But it is still very difficult to evaluate the moisture content accurately and quickly. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes an intelligent algorithm based on random forest regression (RFR) to construct an efficient evaluation method through segmented FDS curves. Furthermore, the characteristics of FDS curves were studied and the intelligent method was compared with support vector regression (SVR) and deep neural networks (DNN). The results show that the dielectric loss, the real part and imaginary part of complex capacitance all move upward with the moisture increasing, so they can be used as the input feature of the evaluation model;The moisture content evaluation accuracy of the RFR model in the whole frequency band is higher than that of SVR and DNN models;With the increase of lower cut off frequency (FDS test stop frequency), the FDS test time is greatly shortened, and the accuracy of the RFR model can still meet the evaluation requirements. Therefore, the data in a compromise frequency band can be used to evaluate the moisture content of oil paper insulation accurately and quickly.

Soft Wrist-Worn Multi-Functional Sensor Array for Real-Time Hand Gesture Recognition

Soft electronics have been widely applied to wearable electronics, hand gesture detection and human robot interaction (HR I). Soft wrist-worn sensor system (SWSS) with electromyography (EMG), strain/pressure sensing abilities has been created for continuous hand gesture recognition, which includes multi-source data sensing, data collection and process, and wireless communication. SWSS is conformal contact with skin surface as the softness of SWSS, and it would improve the wearability with the wrist during long-term hand gesture monitoring. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and support vector machines (SVM) algorithms are applied to hand gesture recognition with average accuracy 83.67%, 86.8% for Group #1 (wrist flexion (WF), wrist extension (WE), finger flexion (FF), finger extension (FE), radial deviation (RD), and ulnar deviation (UD)) and 84.71%, 88.53% for Group #2 (sign language 0-9 digits), respectively. It is found that the recognition accuracy has just a little decreased during the long-term hand gesture detection at different sessions (at initial time, one day after, three days after and seven days after). This paper demonstrated the feasibility of gesture recognition via SWSS on wrist, and it could be integrated into wrist-worn electronic system for human robot interaction.

Transverse thickness profile control of electrical steel in 6-high cold rolling mills based on the GA-PSO hybrid algorithm

In order to meet the shape control requirements of "dead flat" transverse thickness profile of electrical steel sheet in cold rolling process, the 3D finite element model (FEM) for roll stacks and strip of 6-high tandem cold rolling mills (TCMs) was built with the developed Edge Drop Control Work Rolls for Non-shifting (EDW-N). The efficiency curves of the work roll bending (WRB), the intermediate roll bending (IRB), and the intermediate roll shifting (IRS) in cold rolling process are obtained for transverse thickness profile control performance. The control strategy of multi-stand and multi-variable profile and flatness control actuators, i.e., WRB, IRB, and IRS of stands 1 similar to 5 in 6-high TCMs is proposed based on the GA-PSO hybrid algorithm with better optimization ability. The results show that the control strategy can fully exploit the shape control ability and achieve the high precision control for transverse thickness profile of 6-high TCMs. The industrial application on the production gives remarkable results that the rate of the measured strip crown less than 7 mu m increased from 38.58 to 67.74% for electrical steel sheet in the 1420-mm 6-high TCMs. The control strategy has applied to the production successfully.

Dynamic neural network method-based improved PSO and BR algorithms for transient probabilistic analysis of flexible mechanism

To improve the computing efficiency and precision of transient probabilistic analysis of flexible mechanism, dynamic neural network method (DNNM)-based improved particle swarm optimization (PSO)/Bayesian regularization (BR) (called as PSO/BR-DNNM) is proposed based on the developed DNNM with the integration of extremum response surface method (ERSM) and artificial neural network (ANN). The mathematical model of DNNM is established based on ANN on the foundation of investigating ERSM. Aiming at the high nonlinearity and strong coupling characteristics of limit state function of flexible mechanism, accurate weights and thresholds of PSO/BR-DNNM function are discussed by searching initial weights and thresholds based on the improved PSO and training final weights and thresholds by the BR-based training performance function. The probabilistic analysis of two-link flexible robot manipulator (TFRM) was investigated with the proposed method. Reliability degree, distribution characteristics and major factors (section sizes of link-2) of TFRM are obtained, which provides a useful reference for a more effective TFRM design. Through the comparison of three methods (Monte Carlo method, DNNM, PSO/BR-DNNM), it is demonstrated that PSO/BR-DNNM reshapes the probability of flexible mechanism probabilistic analysis and improves the computing efficiency while keeping acceptable computational precision. Moreover, the proposed method offers a useful insight for reliability-based design optimization of flexible mechanism and thereby also enriches the theory and method of mechanical reliability design. Model and algorithm for 4PLRP with uncertain delivery time

To address the challenge of logistics routing decision under uncertain environment, this paper studies a fourth party logistics routing problem (4PLRP) with uncertain delivery time (4PLRPU). A novel 4PLRPU model based on uncertainty theory is proposed by describing the delivery time of a third party logistics (3PL) provider as an uncertain variable. After that, the model is transformed into an equivalent deterministic model, and several improved genetic algorithms are designed to get solutions. To handle the problem of infeasible solutions in the proposed 4PLRPU, an improved node-based genetic algorithm (INGA) and an improved distance-based genetic algorithm (IDGA) are developed to reduce the computing time required to repair infeasible solutions, and an improved genetic algorithm based on the simple graph and Dijkstra algorithm (SDGA) is proposed to avoid the generation of infeasible solutions. Numerical experiments are conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed algorithms and verify the effectiveness of the proposed 4PLRPU model. The results show that INGA and SDGA are more effective than the standard genetic algorithm and IDGA at solving large-scale problems.
