This work reviews a number of algorithms to solve the location management problem in mobile networks for both static and dynamic scenarios. In the static mode, results of five algorithms are used to highlight the pros and cons for each algorithm. These results provide new insight into the mobility management problem that can influence the design of future wireless networks. In the dynamic mode in which mobile users' past movement patterns are used in making future paging decisions by the network, the performance of an online location management algorithm is examined under different deployment setups. Performance results of this algorithm show its advantages over the currently implemented and/or proposed static location management systems (including GSM).

Many system-development projects today are mainly driven by the complexity of their software interacting with sensors or actuators in an embedded context. Autonomous vehicle development is a domain where it seems inevitably necessary to apply modern development techniques to cope with complexity, increase development efficiency, and ensure appropriate quality. Furthermore, changes that are triggered by customers or inventions of competitors, as well as bugs, enforce a comprehensible, if necessary, yet agile development process with stringent quality management. In this paper, we describe the agile efficiency- and quality-focused change management mainly based on scenario-driven regression simulation used in the CarOLO project for the development of an autonomously driving vehicle to compete in the 2007 Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Urban Challenge program. The main contribution is the demonstration of the modern software engineering techniques' applicability to develop distributed embedded systems.

The U. S. Naval Air Systems Command is considering extended-life environmental sonobuoy concepts to better characterize littoral environments. Some conceptual designs contain thermistors to measure ocean temperatures and hydrophones to measure ambient noise. In this work, measured temperature profiles and predictions of ambient noise using ship densities in the Sea of Japan are used to simulate a) data collected with 3 "single-shot" fixed sonobuoys, b) data collected with 3 extended-life sonobuoys drifting over a 12-days, and c) "ground-truth" or actual conditions. Those environmental simulations are used to predict acoustic conditions;i.e., transmission loss, detection range, and detection probability at 100 Hz for an anti-submarine warfare application. The simulated environmental fields and predicted acoustic results for fixed and drifting sensors are compared to our best estimate of actual conditions. Results show that 3 drifting buoys yield significantly better representations of the actual temperatures, ambient noise, and derived acoustic fields than 3 discrete measurements. intelligent algorithms are used to locate tactical sonobuoys in the three environments. The calculated detection probabilities from the drifting buoy environment are 20% more accurate than those from the discretely measured environment.

Load-Balancing is a significant problem in heterogeneous distributed systems. There exist many load balancing algorithms, however, lost approaches are very problem specific oriented mid a comparison is therefore complex. This paper proposes a generic architectural pattern for a load balancing framework that allows for the plugging of different load balancing algorithms, reaching from unintelligent to intelligent ones, to ease the selection of the best algorithm for a certain problem scenario. As in complex network environments there is no "one-fits-all solution", also the integration of several different algorithms shall be supported. The presented pattern assumes autonomous agents and decentralized control. It can be composed towards arbitrary network topologies, foresees exchangeable policies for load-balancing, and uses a black-board based communication mechanism to achieve high software architecture agility. The pattern has been hnplemented and first instantiations of it with three algorithms have been bench implemented and first instantiations of it with three algorithms have been benchmarked.

The mobility requirement for Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) is expected to increase significantly as the number of conflicts shift from open terrain operations to the increased complexity of urban settings. In preparation for this role Defence R&D Canada - Suffield is exploring novel mobility platforms utilizing intelligent mobility algorithms that will each contribute to improved UGV mobility. The design of a mobility platform significantly influences its ability to maneuver in the world. Highly configurable and mobile platforms are typically best suited for unstructured terrain. intelligent mobility algorithms seek to exploit the inherent dexterity of the platform and available world representation of the environment to allow the vehicle to engage extremely irregular and cluttered environments. As a result, the capabilities of vehicles designed with novel platforms utilizing intelligent mobility algorithms will outperform larger vehicles without these capabilities. However, there exist many challenges in the development of UGV systems to satisfy the increased mobility requirement for future military operations. This paper discusses a research methodology proposed to overcome these challenges, which primarily involves the definition and development of novel mobility platforms for intelligent mobility research. It addresses intelligent mobility algorithms and the incorporation of world representation and perception research in the creation of necessary synergistic systems. In addition, it presents an overview of the novel mobility platforms and research activities at Defence R&D Canada - Suffield aimed at advancing UGV mobility capabilities in difficult and relevant military environments.

Multi-spectral imaging provides digital images of a scene or object at a large, usually sequential number of wavelengths, generating precise optical spectra at every pixel. We use the term "spectral signature" for a quantitative plot of optical property variations as a function of wavelengths. We present here intelligent spectral signature bio-imaging methods we developed, including automatic signature selection based on machine learning algorithms and database search-based automatic color allocations, and selected visualization schemes matching these approaches. Using this intelligent spectral signature bio-imaging method, we could discriminate normal and aganglionic colon tissue of the Hirschsprung's disease mouse model with over 95% sensitivity and specificity in various similarity measure methods and various anatomic organs such as parathyroid gland, thyroid gland and pre-tracheal fat in dissected neck of the rat in vivo.

The rapid growth of telecommunication networks worldwide has placed greater demands and challenges on conventional radio planning tools. One way of overcoming some of these demands is to introduce intelligent algorithms that are capable of extracting valuable knowledge from existing, data to support the planning process. Various forms of intelligent methods could be utilized for this purpose. An overview of the use of various intelligent algorithms that have been proposed for the purposes of optimizing the radio planning process is provided and considers an appropriate method that could be used for planning networks effectively for the South African context.

Telecommunication networks across Africa have witnessed the widespread use of mobile technologies to meet the demands of access to basic telecommunication services. With the rapid growth of these networks, greater demands are being placed on the development of wireless networks in terms of efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This paper focuses on work currently being done in the development of a cellular network planning tool that takes into consideration various 'environment' related data to influence the traditional cellular network planning methodologies. Particular emphasis is placed on the utilization of so called 'intelligent' algorithms to make effective decisions in the choice optimum values for various parameters in network. Specific focus is made on the choice of base station placement and subscriber characteristic identification for capacity related planning.
