In this paper, we perform a performance comparison of two different solutions for next generation mobile fronthauling, both based on digital signal processing (DSP) channel aggregation options, but in the two variants usually indicated as Time Division Multiplexing Access (TDMA) and Frequency Division Multiplexing Access (FDMA). The two DSP-based options are here compared for the scenarios of 48 (20 MHz) LTE-A, 96 (20 MHz) LTE-A or 24 new radio NR (100 MHz) channels by means of simulation on realistic intensity modulation and direct detection optical fronthauling link. We report on spectral occupation, DSP complexity and error vector magnitude (EVM) as performance metrics. We show that TDMA option has more compact bandwidth, it does not require pre-emphasis to equalize per channel EVM and gives out a slightly better EVM performance than FDMA when the optical channel shows significant frequency roll-off towards higher channels.

We propose a symbol synchronization scheme based on Gold sequences modulated on a single pilot subcarrier for the OFDMA-PON. The IMDD real-time experimental demonstrations are carried out with two ONUs and one OLT. The results show that the accurate symbol synchronization can be achieved at received optical power of -21dBm on the condition of SFO range from Oppm to 70ppm between two ONUs.

In this paper, we propose a timing synchronization scheme based on Gold sequences modulated on a single subcarrier for the orthogonal frequency-division multiple access passive optical network (OFDMA-PON). The intensity- modulation and direct-detection real-time experimental demonstrations are carried out over 25-km standard SMF, the performance of the synchronization is investigated by using two optical network units (ONUs) and one optical line terminal based on field-programmable gate array. The results show that the accurate timing symbol synchronization can be achieved at received optical power as low as -21 dBm on the condition of sampling frequency offset range from 0 to 70 ppm between two ONUs. The measured bit error rate is below the forward error correction threshold for both ONUs at received optical power of -18 dBm.

Offset and Power Optimization for DCO-OFDM in Visible Light Communication Systems

direct-current-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) is used in visible light communications (VLC) for high rate transmission. Due to the unipolarity of optical signals, a direct current (DC) offset along with proper clipping is adopted in DCO-OFDM. A high DC-offset causes a waste of power and a low DC-offset causes a severe clipping distortion. Thus, the DC-offset and information-carrying power shall be jointly optimized to balance clipping distortion and power consumption. We consider the offset and power optimization problem under the optical and/or electrical power constraints over flat and dispersive channels. In the flat case, we analytically characterize the optimal solution, based on which several important insights are provided. We also investigate the relation and impact of the two constraints, and propose efficient algorithms to obtain the optimal solution. In the dispersive case, we identify the scope of the optimal solution, and provide efficient algorithms to jointly optimize the offset and power. The optimality and superiority of the proposed methods are validated by numerical results.

A Single Pilot Subcarrier-Based Sampling Frequency Offset Estimation and Compensation Algorithm for Optical IMDD OFDM Systems

A sampling frequency offset (SFO) estimation and compensation scheme for asynchronous optical intensity-modulation and direct-detection orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems by using one single pilot subcarrier is proposed. Experimental demonstrations are also under taken to evaluate the performance of the mentioned scheme, and results show that precise SFO estimation with an accuracy of < +/- 0.2 ppm can be achieved under the SFO range from -1000 to 1000 ppm after 25 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) transmission. Meanwhile, an SFO compensation method by extending the channel response with the phase shift correction term is also presented;more than 1000 and 400 ppm SFO effects can be compensated by using the phase shift correction term and its approximation, respectively.

PDM-QPSK vector signal generation by MZM-based optical carrier suppression and direct detection

We experimentally demonstrate the generation of polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) modulated vector signal adopting Mach-Zehnder-modulator-based (MZM-based) optical-carrier-suppression (OCS) intensity modulation and direct detection. The MZM is driven by a 6-GHz precoded vector signal carrying 2-Gbaud QPSK transmitter data, and biased at its minimum transmission point to realize OCS modulation. The phase of the 6-GHz precoded vector signal is 1/2 of that of the regular QPSK symbol. Only one polarization beam splitter (PBS) is needed to implement optical polarization diversity. The bit-error rate (BER) for the 2-Gbaud PDM-QPSK modulated vector signal can reach the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3) after 80-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) transmission in the presence of optical dispersion compensation, and 80-km SMF-28 transmission causes no power penalty. Performance Investigation of IM/DD Compatible SSB-OFDM Systems Based on Optical Multicarrier Sources

The authors investigate and compare the performance of three different optical frequency comb sources in an intensity modulated and directly detected compatible SSB OFDM system. The influence of relative intensity noise and carrier-to-noise ratio of the different multicarrier sources, on the performance of a 12.5 Gb/s compatible SSB OFDM system, were investigated experimentally and by simulation. The results obtained show that, system performance depends significantly on the relative intensity noise and carrier-to-noise ratio levels of the specific multicarrier optical source employed. However, it is shown that optical multicarrier sources with low relative intensity noise and high carrier-to-noise ratio levels can assure very good performance in a WDM-OFDM system.

Nonlinear distortion compensation employing SSII cancellation in long reach OFDM PON system

In this work, a novel nonlinear distortion compensation employing SSII cancellation technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in an EAM-based IMDD OFDM system for the first time. The EAM nonlinearity-induced nonlinear distortion is regarded as part of SSII in the proposed model, so that it can be compensated by the calculated theoretical SSIL. Thus, the EAM nonlinearity- and dispersion-induced nonlinear distortion can be eliminated at the receiver simultaneously. Accordingly, the OMI of our system could be increased to reach better performance. Moreover, the SSII cancellation is demonstrated to achieve maximum 5-dB SNR improvement and 3.3-dB sensitivity improvement at FEC limit are demonstrated by incorporating the Nonlinear distortion compensation model into the SSII cancellation technique in 32-Gbps OFDM system over 150-km SSMF.

Position Accuracy of Time-of-Arrival Based Ranging Using Visible Light With Application in Indoor Localization Systems

This paper analyzes an indoor positioning system that uses white lighting LEDs. Modulated signals transmitted by the LEDs are used as the basis of time-of-arrival-based distance estimation. The theoretical limits on the accuracy of estimation are calculated by deriving the Cramer-Rao bound for intensity modulated-windowed sinusoidal signals. Calculations for a typical indoor scenario, assuming perfect synchronization between transmitter and receiver, but using realistic values for other parameters show that very accurate distance estimates are achievable, with typical errors being in the order of centimeters depending on the frequency and power of the sinusoidal signals, the distance from the LED and the properties of the LED and the photoreceiver.
