Joint inter-flow network coding and Opportunistic Routing in Multi-Hop Wireless Mesh networks: A Comprehensive Survey

network coding and opportunistic routing are two recognized innovative ideas to improve the performance of wireless networks by utilizing the broadcast nature of the wireless medium. In the last decade, there has been considerable research on how to synergize inter-flow network coding and opportunistic routing in a single joint protocol outperforming each in any scenario. This paper explains the motivation behind the integration of these two techniques, and highlights certain scenarios in which the joint approach may even degrade the performance, emphasizing the fact that their synergistic effect cannot be accomplished with a naive and perfunctory combination. This survey paper also provides a comprehensive taxonomy of the joint protocols in terms of their fundamental components and associated challenges, and compares existing joint protocols. We also present concluding remarks along with an outline of future research directions.

Wireless network performance is much restricted by the unreliability of the wireless channel and the competition among different flows for the shared network resources such as the bandwidth. network coding is a technique that exploits the broadcast of the wireless channel and can effectively address these two restrictions to improve network performance. For example, with network coding, an intermediate node of multiple flows can encode packets from these flows into one mixed packet and serve these flows using only one transmission instead of multiple transmissions in the traditional way, thus mitigating the competition among flows. inter-flow network coding (XNC), as a form of network coding, considers encoding packets from different flows, and it can benefit wireless mesh networks (WMNs) with either reliable or lossy links. In this paper, we present a survey on XNC in WMNs for unicast traffic, with various design factors related to XNC being covered. Specifically, our survey considers two types of WMNs, one with reliable links and the other with lossy links, and we study how XNC can be effectively utilized in both two types of WMNs. In addition to the benefits of XNC, we also present in this survey some drawbacks of applying XNC in WMNs. With this paper, we believe that readers will have a more thorough understanding of XNC on how it effectively mitigates the resource competition among flows and the channel unreliability problem in WMNs. HCOR: a high-throughput coding-aware opportunistic routing for inter-flow network coding in wireless mesh networks

coding-aware routing is an effective approach to create more coding opportunities in inter-flow network coding. To the best of our knowledge, most of the coding-aware routing schemes focus on maximizing the coding opportunities. However, for opportunistic transmission, the throughput is not always increased with the increase of coding opportunities. In this paper, we explore why this case will happen and how to measure the benefits of network coding in the opportunistic routing. According to the above conclusions, we propose a novel high-throughput coding-aware opportunistic routing (HCOR) to achieve the maximal throughput gain in wireless mesh networks. HCOR is based on anypath routing and takes advantage of the network coding gain to find out the route with minimal anypath cost reasonably. Meanwhile, it is also a 'multihop' network coding and changes the route with dynamical data loads adaptively. Simulation results demonstrate that HCOR has better performance than coding opportunity-aware routing and also obtains a significant throughput gain in wireless mesh networks.

The attention that the scientific community has paid to the use of network coding techniques over Wireless Mesh networks has remarkably increased in the last years. A large group of the existing proposals are based on the combination of packets belonging to different flows, so as to reduce the number of real transmissions over the wireless channels. This would eventually lead to better performances, together with an energy-aware operation. However, there are certain aspects that might prevent their use. In this paper we empirically study one of these deterrents;we propose an algorithm to establish the feasibility of applying network coding over random topologies, by identifying a set of nodes that might be able to act as coding entities. Besides, we discuss the appropriateness of such selection, by comparing the lengths of the corresponding paths. The results show that the probability of promoting these techniques is rather low.

To support real-time end-to-end reliability, we design and implement a Programming Protocol-independent Packet Processors (P4) based inter-flow network coding (PINC) procedure. PINC utilizes the programmability of P4 so that packets can be dynamically processed in react to the change of network environment. This work aims to show the packet processing by enabling inter-flow network coding. The performance and the the potential utilizing inter-flow network coding in P4 switches for end-to-end packet delivery will also be discussed.

This paper proposes a quality of service (QoS) management framework for high throughput satellite (HTS) systems using extremely high frequency (EHF) frequency bands, which can achieve high capacity provided that feeder link outage events caused by severe weather conditions can be properly counteracted. To this regard, smart gateway diversity architectures implementing advanced gateway handover procedures are certainly attractive, although they can only partly mitigate the negative effects of adverse weather conditions in terms of packet losses, delays, and jitters, which significantly degrade the performance of delay-sensitive and delay-insensitive traffic flows. To cope with these technical challenges, we propose an incremental rerouting scheme to control congestion events because of capacity reduction during the transient phase, consisting of offloading high-priority QoS traffic flows from the affected gateway towards gateways operating in more favorable conditions. Moreover, we apply inter-flow network coding at the gateways to protect delay-insensitive flows from packet losses occurring during feeder link outage. Finally, extra capacity is reserved at the gateways to handle the additional traffic resulting from gateway handover. The theoretical analysis (validated by simulation campaigns) allowed characterizing network coding performance and confirming the potentialities of our QoS management framework for HTS systems.

network coding has been recently proposed as a new promising technique that can potentially improve the performance of a wireless multi-hop network significantly. However, most existing studies in this field perform network coding without considering the interplay between transmission power/rate and network coding gain. In many scenarios, the selection of the transmission power/rate brings big impact on network coding gain and consequently network throughput because they have big impact on both reception/overhearing probability and spatial reuse. Therefore, how to improve network throughput by appropriately exploiting the interplay between transmission power, data rate, and network coding gain via localized network operations has been a crucial issue in a multi-hop wireless network. That is, how to achieve a good trade-off between the space-time network resource usage (represented by level of spatial reuse and transmission time) and the network coding gain? To address this problem, in this paper, we propose a decentralized network coding aware power/rate control mechanism, which can enable each node to adjust its transmission power and data rate such that the space-time resource usage is optimized. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed mechanism yields higher performance in network throughput as compared with existing mechanisms. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we propose a location-based friend-assisted coding-aware routing protocol (LFCR) for wireless multihop networks. To achieve improved network throughout, LFCR performs inter-flow network coding based routing with the assistance of location information. Specifically, LFCR combines friend-assisted path discovery and coding-aware routing. Further, when making decision on next hop selection, LFCR takes into account both coding opportunities and forwarding progress in next hop selection and attempts to make a good tradeoff between them. Simulation results show that LFCR significantly outperforms existing work in terms of network throughput, packet delivery ratio, and coding frequency.

Back-pressure scheduling has been considered as a promising strategy for resource allocation in wireless multi-hop networks. However, there still exist some problems preventing its wide deployment in practice. One of the problems is its poor end-to-end (E2E) delay performance. In this paper, we study how to effectively use inter-flow network coding to improve E2E delay and also throughput performance of back-pressure scheduling. For this purpose, we propose an efficient network coding based back-pressure algorithm (NBP), and accordingly design detailed procedure regarding how to consider coding gain in back-pressure based weight calculation and how to integrate it into next hop decision making in the NBP algorithm. We theoretically prove that NBP can stabilize the networks. Simulation results demonstrate that NBP can not only improve the delay performance of back-pressure algorithm, but also achieve higher network throughput. Copyright (C) 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In wireless multihop bidirectional communication environment, there is a possibility that packet collision and retransmission owing to the hidden node problem decrease efficiency of throughput. The aim of this article is to achieve efficient and reliable packet transmissions in such environments. To do so, we propose a packet transmission scheme named inter-flow network coding with passive acknowledgment. In inter-flow network coding with passive acknowledgment, it is necessary to optimize the encoding latency and to avoid passive acknowledgment packet collision, so we address these issues in this article. Finally, we also confirm that the inter-flow network coding with passive acknowledgment scheme is effective in terms of the collection ratio and delay through simulations.
