Minerva: Decentralized Collaborative Query Processing Over interplanetary file system

Data silos create barriers to accessing and utilizing data dispersed over networks. Directly sharing data easily suffers from the long downloading time, the single point failure and the untraceable data usage. In this paper, we present Minerva, a peer- to-peer cross-cluster data query system based on the interplanetary file system (IPFS). Minerva makes use of the distributed Hash table (DHT) lookup to pinpoint the locations that store content chunks. We theoretically model the DHT query delay and introduce a fat Merkle tree structure as well as the DHT caching to reduce it. We design the query plan for read and write operations on top of Apache Drill that enables the collaborative query with decentralized workers. We conduct comprehensive experiments on Minerva, and the results show that Minerva achieves up to 2.08x query performance acceleration compared to the original IPFS data query, and can complete data analysis queries on the Internet-like environments within an average latency of 0.615 second. With a collaborative query, Minerva could perform up to 1.39x performance acceleration than the centralized query with raw data shipment.

This paper presents a file storage and sharing system implemented using IPFS Pinata, *** and Hardhat which offer decentralized, effective, and secure access to digital assets. This system also enables the ability to upload files to the IPFS network for distributed storage and the ability to share them with peers. It also implements a time based access control system using smart contracts to easily control access to the files uploaded. This innovation improves security and facilitates timely exchange of information while also eradicating the necessity of having to manage access. This is due to the versatility of blockchain's unalterable nature together with IPFS distributed file-sharing system which provides a secure file-sharing method while keeping costs low and helps maintain adaptability.

IPFSz: An Efficient Data Compression Scheme in interplanetary file system

interplanetary file system (IPFS) is a peer-to-peer (P2P) distributed file system that allows data to be shared and exchanged between connected nodes. Recently, IPFS aims to replace existing protocols used in a centralized system (e.g., HTTP) by overcoming their weaknesses such as a single point of failure and arbitrary control. However, we observe that the performance of IPFS is worse as the data size increases since it demands large numbers of storage and network I/O operations. In this paper, we present an efficient data transmission scheme in IPFS called IPFSz to improve the I/O performance of IPFS. To do this, we extend IPFS by enabling real-time compression functionality while maintaining its existing operations in IPFS. In IPFSz, we compress/decompress the data during I/O operations by using a compression algorithm, manage the states of data (e.g., compressed or decompressed), and provide a compression/decompression interface to applications. Thus, IPFSz can reduce the number of storage and network I/O operations and storage space without sacrificing the integrity of the existing IPFS. We have implemented and evaluated IPFSz on five Amazon EC2 nodes. The experimental results show that IPFSz provides higher performance by up to $7.9\times $ and saves the storage space by up to $6.3\times $ compared with existing IPFS.

In centralized video streaming platforms, the platform owner, rather than the content producer, controls most of the content uploaded on the centralized video platform.-Blockchain-based video streaming systems aim to create decentralized peer-to-peer networks for video streaming services with various monetization options. Video transcoding is commonly used in the video streaming industry to convert videos into numerous formats for various viewers. We argue, however, that the standard media delivery framework may be modified by an interplanetary file system-based delivery network with Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure Live Streaming for any distribution model (live or on-demand). This paper examines the performance of decentralised video streaming platforms like NiftySubs, characterized by a 'pay-as-you-watch' subscription-based service paradigm, wherein the user only has to pay for the duration they watch the content on the Ethereum Blockchain. We also discuss the use of protocols like Unlock for providing access to locked content on the Blockchain, Superfluid Protocol money streams to enable actual time finance and storage of content on Content Delivery Network like interplanetary file system, which are based on content-based addressing mechanisms. Finally, we also discuss challenges and solutions by which the security of content can be established and maintained and how users can view accurate time usage statistics with the help of indexing solutions like the Graph Protocol.

Blockchain technology is popular due to properties such as immutability, transparency, distributed storage, and control decentralisation. Student certificates and skill verification are used for job applications and other purposes. Forgery of certificates with centralised authority is a major issue in online education. This challenge can be solved by using blockchain-based certificate management for students and skill evidence management for employees. However, these types of certificate managements have many issues like security and privacy breaches, fear of cyber-attack, hijacking of the session, identity theft of participants, etc. Because blockchain uses cryptographic hash and digital signature for sending and verifying transactions in blockchain peer-to-peer networks, we can overcome many security and privacy difficulties. We proposed a system that generates the identity of students using the tokens and stores them in the interplanetary file system (IPFS). The proposed system makes use of IPFS and EdDSA (Edward-curve Digital Signature Algorithm) for digital signature and verification, as well as SHA-256 for cryptographic hashing. Our proposed system results provide the transaction speed, time required for per transaction, and time required for signing and verifying a transaction. We compare our proposed system with the previously developed systems in terms of privacy, transaction cost, large file storage, blockchain implementation and registration cost.

When the COVID-19 pandemic erupted in early 2020, the world made an unprecedented shift to remote work. As a precaution, some Internet providers scaled back service levels temporarily, although that probably wasn't necessary for countries in Asia, Europe, and North America, which were generally able to cope with the surge in demand caused by people teleworking (and binge-watching Netflix). That's because most of their networks were overprovisioned, with more capacity than they usually need. But in countries without the same level of investment in network infrastructure, the picture was less rosy: Internet service providers (ISPs) in South Africa and Venezuela, for instance, reported significant strain.

A novel decentralized model for storing and sharing neuroimaging data using ethereum blockchain and the interplanetary file system

Current methods to store and transfer medical neuroimaging data raise issues with security and transparency, and novel protocols are needed. Ethereum smart contracts present an encouraging new option. Ethereum is an open-source platform that allows users to construct smart contracts—self-executable packages of code that exist in the Ethereum state and allow transactions under programmed conditions. The present study developed a proof-of-concept smart contract that stores patient brain tumor data such as patient identifier, disease, grade, chemotherapy drugs, and Karnofsky score. The interplanetary file system was used to efficiently store the image files, and the corresponding content identifier hashes were stored within the smart contracts. Testing with a private, proof-of-authority network required only 889 MB of memory per insertion to insert 350 patient records, while retrieval required 910 MB. Inserting 350 patient records required 907 ms. The concept presented in this study exemplifies the use of smart contracts and off chain data storage for efficient retrieval/insertion of medical neuroimaging data. © 2021, Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of Computer Applications and Management.

As the Internet of Things (IoT) grows exponentially, it is becoming deeply embedded in our daily lives. As the quantity and quality of data produced by devices have also gradually increased, there have been increasing attempts to use these useful IoT big data for various applications and to combine IoT with machine learning and deep learning to process a large amount of useful data. However, in the centralized deep learning method, privacy issues have been raised because the server can use personal data collected from the user's IoT. Due to this reason, Federated Learning (FL) method that can protect users' personal data while doing machine learning has been studied. However, current FL also has the possibility of data poisoning attacks and other problems. Therefore, this work, by suggesting distributed FL framework combined with interplanetary file system and Differential Privacy, proposes a method that allows users to participate in FL safely and efficiently. Through this method, participants share some parts of data, and these data are collected by specific nodes. These data are combined to make a new dataset of FL network for defending against data poisoning attack and vouch for training's accuracy. Also, an aggregation mechanism is proposed to suppress the effect of a malicious node poisoning attack. Finally, this framework is tested in python environment. With this method, one can freely open a project and anyone can join in with distributed condition, even when he or she has no enough dataset for learning but computing capability, vice versa. If a malicious node tries to interrupt the learning with poisoned dataset, aggregation mechanism and combined validation set from the network's nodes will suppress the bad effect. We have tested through python and open-source code to verify the efficiency and privacy.

The pervasive issue of degree fraud poses a significant challenge to the credibility of academic credentials, necessitating innovative solutions to ensure the integrity of diploma verification processes. This paper proposes an integrated solution leveraging Blockchain, interplanetary file system (IPFS), and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption technologies to establish a secure and transparent diploma management system. IPFS offers a decentralized approach to file storage and distribution, eliminating reliance on centralized authorities and enhancing data availability and accessibility. Similarly, Blockchain technology provides a tamper-resistant ledger for storing diploma data, ensuring transparency and immutability through distributed consensus mechanisms. Ethereum, with its smart contract functionality, facilitates the automation of transactional processes, further enhancing the system's efficiency and reliability, finally, AES ensures the confidentiality of certificate contents through strong encryption, preventing unauthorized access to sensitive information. The loading process for university diplomas involves encrypting PDF files with AES encryption, uploading them to the IPFS cluster, and recording their unique hash values on the Ethereum blockchain. Subsequently, the verification process requires accurate specification of both the file and transaction hash values, ensuring the authenticity of diplomas through blockchain-based verification. The implementation of the proposed system demonstrates its efficacy in securely uploading and verifying diplomas, utilizing technologies such as MetaMask for Ethereum authentication and AES encryption for data confidentiality. By ensuring the integrity and authenticity of diplomas, the system mitigates the risk of fraud and upholds the integrity of educational qualifications.

interplanetary file system (IPFS) is a peer-to-peer distributed file system. It enables users to publish and retrieve contents with only an ID of the content. But IPFS suffers from high delay in publishing and retrieving contents. The reason is that IPFS uses Kademlia to calculate the location of contents. This means many message exchanges among IPFS peers. In this paper, we propose to use Named Data Networking to replace IPFS's Kademlia search as a way to improve the overall performance. Our current test results in a private network suggests great improvement when IPFS publish or retrieve contents.
