Web3, decentralized web, is one of the buzz words brought up in the field of IT business as well as IT technology. Data ownership is supposed to be democratized by Web3, which means data is kept at its owner and the availability of the data is controlled and managed by the owner in the world of Web3. One of the mechanisms providing democratization of data ownership is interplanetary file system (IPFS) which leaves data as well as its meta data at its owner and only pointers to data are distributed over the network for data sharing. This paper discusses network layer support for IPFS to improve its performance. In particular, we propose to use Information Centric Networking as the network layer of IPFS to speed up data search in IPFS.

We focus on the problem of efficiently deploying a federated learning training task in a decentralized setting with multiple aggregators. To that end, we introduce a number ()I' improvements and modifications to the recently proposed IPLS protocol. In particular, we relax its assumption for direct communication across participants, using instead indirect communication over a decentralized storage system, effectively turning it into a partially asynchronous protocol. Moreover, we secure it against malicious aggregators (that drop or alter data) by relying on homomorphic cryptographic commitments for efficient verification of aggregation. We implement the modified IPLS protocol and report on its performance and potential bottlenecks. Finally, we identify important next steps for this line of research.

The proliferation of resourceful mobile devices that store rich, multidimensional and privacy-sensitive user data motivate federated learning, a paradigm that enables mobile devices to produce a machine-learning model without sharing their data. However, the majority of the existing federated frameworks follow a centralized approach. In this work, we introduce IPLS, a fully decentralized federated learning framework that is partially based on the interplanetary file system (IPFS). By using IPLS and connecting into the corresponding private IPFS network, any party can initiate the training process of a machine-learning model or join an ongoing training process that has been started by another party. IPLS scales with the number of participants, is robust against intermittent connectivity and dynamic participant departures/arrivals, requires minimal resources and guarantees that the accuracy of the trained model quickly converges to that of a centralized federated learning framework with a negligible accuracy drop of less than 1 parts per thousand.

Decentralized data storage systems like the interplanetary filesystem (IPFS) are becoming increasingly popular, e. g., as a data layer in blockchain applications and for sharing content in a censorship-resistant manner. In IPFS, data is hosted by an open set of nodes and data requests are broadcast to connected peers in addition to being routed via a distributed hash table (DHT). In this paper, we present a passive monitoring methodology that exploits this design for obtaining data requests from a significant and upscalable portion of nodes. Using an implementation of our approach for the IPFS network and data collected over a period of fifteen months, we demonstrate how our methodology enables profound insights into, among other things: the size of the IPFS network, activity levels and structure, and content popularity distributions. We furthermore present that our methodology can be abused for attacks on users' privacy. For example, we were able to identify and successfully surveil the IPFS nodes corresponding to public IPFS/HTTP gateways. We give a detailed analysis of the mechanics and reasons behind implied privacy threats and discuss possible countermeasures.

Blockchain and Internet of things are the most promising and upcoming technologies. Blockchain is a distributed, peer to peer database forming a chain between multiple blocks of data. The internet of things works on a similar paradigm where multiple devices are connected to the internet forming a network of networks. Combined together they offer solutions for various problems, especially in the field of healthcare where quick reporting of data or results is of utmost importance. Recent studies have proven that delays in providing healthcare are directly linked to patient confidence and chances of recovery. An unreliable storage of health records has only aggravated the problem. Our paper aims to provide a solution for these issues by proposing a Blockchain-Internet of things model where a bio-sensor measures and collects real time data with respect to a patient's medical status and stores it in the blockchain. In this way quick reporting and tamper proof storage of data occurs. By deploying a smart contract the final hospital bill can be calculated along with insurance coverage. This would negate the need of third party providers and create a transparent system. Our paper also proposes the use of Inter planetary file system to store discharged patients records thus reducing the load on the actual blockchain. Overall this will surely benefit patients and doctors alike by creating a safe and transparent environment along with quick response to a patient's need.

Digital vaccination passports are being proposed by various governments internationally. Trust, scalability and security are all key challenges in implementing an online vaccine passport. Initial approaches attempt to solve this problem by using centralised systems with trusted authorities. However, sharing vaccine passport data between different organisations, regions and countries has become a major challenge. A platform for creating, storing and verifying digital COVID-19 vaccine certifications is presented, making use of interplanetary file system (IPFS) to guarantee that there is no single point of failure and to allow data to be securely distributed globally. Blockchain and smart contracts are also integrated into the platform to explicitly determine policies and log access rights to the passport data while ensuring all actions are audited and verifiably immutable. Our proposed platform realises General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requirements in terms of user consent, data encryption, data erasure and accountability obligations. We assess the scalability and performance of the platform using IPFS and Blockchain test networks.

Current social media platforms centralize user data, control content moderation, and employ opaque algorithms, raising concerns about privacy, censorship, and user control. By suggesting a decentralized social media platform that makes use of blockchain technology and the interplanetary file system, this study seeks to close this gap. The platform makes use of smart contracts for user authentication and trustless transactions, as well as the security and transparency of blockchain technology for data storage. Additionally, interplanetary file system offers decentralized storage for content, fostering censorship resistance. It features functionalities to add, remove, and view tweets posted to the blockchain by different wallet addresses. This approach empowers users with data ownership and control over their online interactions, contributing to a more equitable and inclusive digital society.

interplanetary file system (IPFS) is one of the most promising decentralized off-chain storage mechanisms, particularly relevant for blockchains, aiming to store the content forever, thus it is crucial to understand its composition, deduce actor intent and investigate its operation and impact. Beyond the network functionality that IPFS offers, assessing the quality of nodes, i.e. analysing and categorising node software and data, is essential to mitigate possible risks and exploitation of IPFS. To this end, in this work we took three daily snapshots of IPFS nodes within a month and analysed each node (by IP address) individually, using threat intelligence feeds. The above enabled us to quantify the number of potentially malicious and/or abused nodes. The outcomes lead us to consider using a filter to isolate malicious nodes from the network, an approach we implemented as a prototype and used for assessment of effectiveness.

In recent years, centralized storage systems have been extensively adopted by many companies, organizations, and individuals for storing and sharing data. These systems, however, make concerns for users of a single point of failure and the involvement of a centralized entity or third party. Therefore, there is a need for developing decentralized storage systems to overcome the drawbacks of traditional approach. In order to enhance secure and transparent characteristics of decentralized storage systems, in this paper, we present a combination of IPFS (interplanetary file system), ABE (Attribute-based Encryption), Multi-Authority ABE (MA-ABE), and Ethereum blockchain. In particular, we facilitate the advantages of IPFS network to store user's data in a distributed manner. Furthermore, we make the use of MA-ABE to encrypt a document, which an user needs to share it among multiple organizations. The hash returned by the IPFS network will be stored in the Ethereum blockchain network to provide trustworthy for all users participating in our system. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first storage system using IPFS, ABE, MA-ABE, and blockchain technologies together to ensure decentralized, secure, and transparent characteristics for storing and sharing data.

Supply chain data management faces challenges in traceability, transparency, and trust. These issues stem from data silos and communication barriers. This research introduces DIDChain, a framework leveraging blockchain technology, Decentralized Identifiers, and the interplanetary file system. DIDChain improves supply chain data management. To address privacy concerns, DIDChain employs a hybrid blockchain architecture that combines public blockchain transparency with the control of private systems. Our hybrid approach preserves the authenticity and reliability of supply chain events. It also respects the data privacy requirements of the participants in the supply chain. Central to DIDChain is the cheqd infrastructure. The cheqd infrastructure enables digital tracing of asset events, such as an asset moving from the milk-producing dairy farm to the cheese manufacturer. In this research, assets are raw materials and products. The cheqd infrastructure ensures the traceability and reliability of assets in the management of supply chain data. Our contribution to blockchain-enabled supply chain systems demonstrates the robustness of DIDChain. Integrating blockchain technology through DIDChain offers a solution to data silos and communication barriers. With DIDChain, we propose a framework to transform the supply chain infrastructure across industries.
