Serverless computing revolutionizes cloud software by eliminating the need to manage the underlying infrastructure, while providing efficient scaling, performance and security isolation as well as usage metering. The goal of Runboxes is to bring the benefits of serverless computing to interactive computing, involving ad-hoc, stateful, resource-intensive tasks, whose resource demand is directly affected by the observed user behavior. We evaluate Runboxes in the context of cost-efficient hosting of sandbox programming environments for Computer Science students.

Jupyter Notebooks for the study of advanced topics in Fluid Mechanics

In recent years, Jupyter Notebooks have become a very useful free and open-source tool in teaching, as they allow you to combine text, images, mathematical expressions, links and code into a single document. This gives students an interactive document with which they can experiment and learn with the help of high-level mathematical calculus. In Fluid Mechanics, it is very common for students to deal with complex computations that take away attention from the Mechanic, especially in advanced topics such as Rheology, Turbulence, or Boundary Layer. The subject "Advanced Fluid Mechanics" is an elective one of the last year of the Bachelor's degree in Industrial and Aerospace Technology Engineering at the Terrassa School of Industrial, Aerospace and Audiovisual Engineering at the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya. This subject has three ECTS credits and has been taught since the academic year 2020-2021 This subject complements the compulsory subject Fluid Mechanics and is developed in 6 weeks with 5 h of class each week. This work presents Fluid Mechanics modules with Jupyter Notebooks that complement the syllabus given in the compulsory subject. An elective subject is presented where subjects of Fluid Mechanics per week are studied independently, using different Python tools: symbolic calculation, modeling of experimental data, statistical analysis, numerical calculation, and so forth. The main goal is for the student to focus on mechanical concepts and actively learn to use the tools available, especially open source, to do the associated mathematical calculations.

Computers as interactive Machines: Can We Build an Explanatory Abstraction?

In this paper, we address the question of what current computers are from the point of view of human-computer interaction. In the early days of computing, the Turing machine (TM) has been the cornerstone of the understanding of computers. The TM defines what can be computed and how computation can be carried out. However, in the last decades, computers have evolved and increasingly become interactive systems, reacting in real-time to external events in an ongoing loop. We argue that the TM does not provide a mechanistic explanation for interactive computing. The reason is that the fundamental phenomena relevant to interactive computing are out of the scope of classical computability theory. Part of the explanatory power of the TM relies on what we propose to call an execution model. An execution model belongs to a level of abstraction where it is possible to describe both the functional architecture and the execution in mechanistic terms. An updated execution model is warranted to provide the minimal mechanistic description for interactive computation as a counterpart of what the TM could explain regarding Church-Turing computation. It would support an explanation of the ubiquitous computing devices we know - those interacting with humans, e.g., through digital interfaces. We show that such a model is not available within interactive models of computation and that relevant abstractions and concerns are available in computer engineering but need to be identified and gathered. To fill this void, we propose to reflect on the level of abstraction required to support the mechanistic description of an interactive execution and propose some preliminary requirements.

We describe an interactive computing environment called JetLag. JetLag implements the following features of Phylanx project: (1) Phylanx, a Python-based asynchronous array computing toolkit;(2) the APEX performance measurement library;(3) a performance visualization framework called Traveler;(4) the Tapis/Agave Science as a Service middleware;and (6) a container infrastructure that includes Docker-based Jupyter notebook for the client and a singularity image for the server. The running system starts with a user performing array computations on their workstation or laptop. If, at some point, the calculation the user is performing becomes sufficiently intensive or numerous, it can be packaged and sent to another machine where it will run (through the batch queue system if there is one), produce a result, and have that result sent back to the user's local interface. Whether the calculation is local or remote, the user will be able to use APEX and Traveler to diagnose and fix performance related problems. The JetLag system is suitable for a variety of array computational tasks, including machine learning and exploratory data analysis.

Calico: Relocatable On-cloth Wearables with Fast, Reliable, and Precise Locomotion

We explore Calico, a miniature relocatable wearable system with fast and precise locomotion for on-body interaction, actuation and sensing. Calico consists of a two-wheel robot and an on-cloth track mechanism or "railway," on which the robot travels. The robot is self-contained, small in size, and has additional sensor expansion options. The track system allows the robot to move along the user's body and reach any predetermined location. It also includes rotational switches to enable complex routing options when diverging tracks are presented. We report the design and implementation of Calico with a series of technical evaluations for system performance. We then present a few application scenarios, and user studies to understand the potential of Calico as a dance trainer and also explore the qualitative perception of our scenarios to inform future research in this space.

The Minnesota Supercomputing Institute (MSI) at the University of Minnesota has adopted a goal of supporting interactive high performance computing (HPC) as a first class service. For several years MSI has used Jupyterhub to provide a web gateway to interactive Jupyter notebook environments on HPC resources. In the past year MSI has additionally adopted Open OnDemand as a general purpose web gateway for interactive HPC services. This places MSI in the position to provide an experience-informed comparison of two popular open-source platforms for interactive web-based access to HPC resources. Open OnDemand is designed specifically to provide access to HPC resources, and includes facilities to manage files and jobs, access in-browser command line sessions, and provide virtual desktop access to GUI applications as well as proxied access to web applications such as Jupyter servers. Jupyterhub, in contrast, is designed to provide multi-user access to Jupyter servers, and when configured with the Batchspawner extension is able to manage such servers on scheduled HPC cluster resources. Jupyterlab, when accessed through a Jupyterhub so configured, likewise offers access to in-browser facilities such as command line terminals and file management, and can proxy access to some other web applications, in addition to supporting the main Jupyter Notebook application. From a systems perspective, both platforms provide a highly configurable base on which to build customized gateway solutions, but the differing focus of the two projects results in different characteristics and challenges. Despite different origins and project focus, Jupyterhub and Open OnDemand have evolved to be able to provide strongly overlapping services to users of an HPC center. This poster will compare the characteristics of the two platforms and the different advantages and limitations of each, from the perspective of an HPC center that has deployed both into production for use by a large base of research use

Mobile systems support portable, context-sensitive, and interactive computing that empower users to perform complex computations and communications on the go. Majority of the existing software systems run on web or workstation-based (traditional computing) platforms, lacking the capabilities of mobile systems, and are referred to as legacy software. The primary contribution of this research is a process-centric approach that enables automation and user decision support to modernize legacy software as context-sensitive and portable mobile-enabled application. Case study based validation complements the modernization process with scenario-based demonstration of the solution and qualitative evaluation of the modernized application. Evaluation results suggest that modernized application supports portable and context-sensitive computations, efficient utilization of device resources, and ease of use.

Project Jupyter is an open-source project for interactive computing widely used in data science, machine learning, and scientific computing. We argue that even though Jupyter helps users perform complex, technical work, Jupyter itself solves problems that are fundamentally human in nature. Namely, Jupyter helps humans to think and tell stories with code and data. We illustrate this by describing three dimensions of Jupyter: 1) interactive computing;2) computational narratives;and 3) the idea that Jupyter is more than software. We illustrate the impact of these dimensions on a community of practice in earth and climate science.

Over the past 18 months, the need to perform atomic detail molecular dynamics simulations of the SARS-CoV-2 virion, its spike protein, and other structures related to the viral infection cycle has led biomedical researchers worldwide to urgently seek out all available biomolecular structure information, appropriate molecular modeling and simulation software, and the necessary computing resources to conduct their work. We describe our experiences from several COVID-19 research collaborations and the challenges they presented in terms of our molecular modeling software development and support efforts, our laboratory's local computing environment, and our scientists' use of non-traditional HPC hardware platforms such as public clouds for large scale parallel molecular dynamics simulations.
