In this paper, we present a design framework of interactivedistance Leaning (IDL) in distributed system environment. In this design framework, interactive distance learning (IDL) system is based on Java technology: Jini technology and Java Media Framework (JMF). Using Java language, a developed system is a platform independent both in software, e.g. operating systems (OS), and hardware, e.g. computer and mobile devices. Any target systems that can run Java Virtual Machine (JVM) are able to run our IDL. In addition, it also gives us a low complexity of implementation. To work with any firewalls in a network, we have proposed IDL gateway which allows us not only solving packet blocking problem but also solving multicast address problem. Moreover, the framework supports fully distributed services. For example service and database engines could be in separated physical location, e.g. video server and database server. This will allow the system scale up easily with small limited conditions. We have demonstrated our prototype software to show that it is working effectively.

This paper is devoted to description of environment for distance lessons, suitable for both remote lectures and hand-on trainings for mastering of particular software products. Proposed solution is based on interception of student's remote session on the server by teacher having administrator's rights. As a result we have managed to create a virtual computer with two sets of controls - two keyboards, two mice, two screens. One control set is located on the teacher's side and the other - on the student's side. That gives the ability to teacher and student to share the same instance of software product under study.

This project aims at designing and developing a new approach towards interactive distance learning to provide distance education in both asynchronous and synchronous modes. Various tools are embedded to meet the needs of both instructors and students. In asynchronous mode the interactive tools like Online Message Boards, Online Quizzes, Online exams, Online Course Registration, Online Grades Tool, Assignments, and Course-notes provide education effectively even when the instructors and the students do not participate at the same time. In synchronous mode interactive tools like Online Discussion Groups, Online Students Feedback tool and Microsoft NetMeeting provide education effectively when both the students and the instructors participate simultaneously. It also consists of effective tools which enable both the administrators as well as the instructors to update the respective databases making the tool more effective. This approach provides immediacy of interaction between the instructors and the students such as immediate feedback from the students to the instructor and immediate attention of the instructor to the students. It promotes active learning and student intellectual involvement, students also learn Internet skills that improve employment options after graduation. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

At the Western Institute of Technical and Further Education (WITAFE) in New South Wales (NSW), vocational education and training (VET) courses are being delivered to students in isolated homesteads and remote Aboriginal communities by interactivedistance elearning (IDL). IDL provides satellite-supported two-way broadband voice, one-way video and Internet access for school-age and adult distance education. Adults commonly access VET courses offered by WITAFE using the equipment provided to their children who are students of a 'School of the Air' or through community facilities in remote Aboriginal communities. By providing lessons via satellite to isolated students TAFENSW is helping to counter long-standing inequities in distance and rural education by decreasing the digital divide and assisting with rural renewal. Through a case study, this paper examines the influence of the provision of IDL and Internet access for adult students in isolated homesteads in NSW and also the benefits and challenges of teaching and learning with IDL.
