It is a challenging problem to track a maneuvering target. Compared to an algorithm with only one model of maneuvering targets tracking, an IMM algorithm for tracking maneuvering targets achieves better performance because different maneuvering target tracking models are strategically integrated. However, the traditional IMM algorithm uses a mixture of a constant velocity model and a constant acceleration model, this results in the difficulties in tracking a very complicate maneuvering target. In this paper, an enhanced IMM algorithm based on the current statistical model is introduced. Because the current statistical model is more reasonable to express the states of a maneuvering target, the enhanced IMM algorithm reduces the errors of maneuvering targets tracking. The simulation results show that the enhanced IMM algorithm for tracking maneuvering targets based on the current statistical model has better accuracy and stability.

On the basis of the characteristics for the millimeter wave radar and infrared imaging composite seeker, an information fusion algorithm has been designed based on interactive multiple model particle filter for the radar and infrared composite seeker. The interactive multiple model is combined with the particle filter algorithm. In this algorithm, the sub-optimal filter of the interactive multiple model (IMM) has been replaced by the particle filter algorithm. And it has efficiently solved the tracking problem for the maneuvering target under the conditions which are nonlinear and non-Gaussian. The simulation results show that the interactive multiple model particle filter algorithm has higher performance than interactive multiple model algorithm based extended kalman filter. And this algorithm can be very sensitive to the change of the target maneuvering and can effectively improve the target tracking accuracy.

An integrated estimation/guidance approach for seeker-less interceptors

This paper addresses the problem of intercepting highly maneuverable threats using seeker-less interceptors that operate in the command guidance mode. These systems are more prone to estimation errors than standard seeker-based systems. In this paper, an integrated estimation/guidance (IEG) algorithm, which combines interactive multiple model (IMM) estimator with differential game guidance law (DGL), is proposed for seeker-less interception. In this interception scenario, the target performs an evasive bang-bang maneuver, while the sensor has noisy measurements and the interceptor is subject to acceleration bound. The IMM serves as a basis for the synthesis of efficient filters for tracking maneuvering targets and reducing estimation errors. The proposed game-based guidance law for two-dimensional interception, later extended to three-dimensional interception scenarios, is used to improve the endgame performance of the command-guided seeker-less interceptor. The IMM scheme and an optimal selection of filters, to cater to various maneuvers that are expected during the endgame, are also described. Furthermore, a chatter removal algorithm is introduced, thus modifying the differential game guidance law (modified DGL). A comparison between modified DGL guidance law and conventional proportional navigation guidance law demonstrates significant improvement in miss distance in a pursuer-evader scenario. Simulation results are also presented for varying flight path angle errors. A numerical study is provided which demonstrates the performance of the combined interactive multiple model with game-based guidance law (IMM/DGL). Simulation study is also carried out for combined IMM and modified DGL (IMM/modified DGL) which exhibits the superior performance and viability of the algorithm reducing the chattering phenomenon. The results are illustrated by an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study in the presence of estimation errors.

Target tracking is one of the most important applications for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). It is usually assumed that the knowledge of the sensor nodes' position is known precisely. However, practically nodes are randomly deployed without prior knowledge about their own positions. In this situation, simultaneous localization and tracking (SLAT) is necessary and is receiving more and more research interest during the last few years. In this paper, several popular and practical filtering techniques are reviewed and compared for the problem of SLAT, including extended Kalman filtering (EKF), unscented Kalman filtering (UKF), and interactive multiple model (IMM). Simulation examples are included to demonstrate the superiority and shortcoming of each method. Results show that compared with other methods, IMM based on UKFs has better accuracy in both localization and tracking, as well as higher robustness.

Optical target tracking by regular target bearing measurements and target range in a lower and scheduled measurement rate is considered. Variance of the target range estimation error is used as the scheduling criterion. For this purpose, target dynamic state vector in modified spherical coordinates is stated in such a way that all target states are decoupled from the range-related target state. Target state dynamic equations in modified spherical coordinates for nearly constant velocity, nearly constant acceleration, and coordinated turn rate kinematic models are analytically derived. For resulted state dynamic equations, an unscented Kalman filter interactive multiple model with range measurement scheduling is utilized as a tracking filter. It is shown that target states are estimated properly and the applied filter has high performance in maneuvering target tracking. (C) 2015 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)

In this paper, an integrated fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control scheme is investigated for nonlinear satellite attitude control systems. The fault diagnosis is performed by a novel interactive multiple model approach aiming at reducing the size of the model set. Unknown fault parameters are jointly estimated with system states by state augmentation and a bank of Unscented Kalman Filters. Based on the faulty information obtained from the fault diagnosis system, a proportional-derivative controller is used to recover the faulty system. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control scheme. (C) 2014 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Predicting short-term bus passenger demand using a pattern hybrid approach

This paper proposes an interactive multiple model-based Pattern Hybrid (IMMPH) approach to predict short-term passenger demand. The approach maximizes the effective information content by assembling the knowledge from pattern models using historical data and optimizing the interaction between them using real-time observations. It can dynamically estimate the priori pattern models combination in advance for the next time interval. The source demand data were collected by Smart Card system along one bus service route over one year. After correlation analysis, three temporal relevant pattern time series are generated, namely, the weekly, daily and hourly pattern time series. Then statistical pattern models are developed to capture different time series patterns. Finally, an amended IMM algorithm is applied to dynamically combine the pattern models estimations to output the final demand prediction. The proposed IMMPH model is validated by comparing with statistical methods and an artificial neural network based hybrid model. The results suggest that the IMMPH model provides a better forecast performance than its alternatives, including prediction accuracy, robustness, explanatory power and model complexity. The proposed approach can be potentially extended to other short-term time series forecast applications as well, such as traffic flow forecast. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

To improve target tracking algorithms, supervised learning of adaptive interacting multiple model (SLAIMM) is compared to other interacting multiple model (IMM) methods. Based on the classical IMM tracking, a trained adaptive acceleration model is added to the filter bank to track behavior between the fixed model dynamics. The results show that the SLAIMM algorithm 1) improves kinematic track accuracy for a target undergoing acceleration, 2) affords track maintenance through maneuvers, and 3) reduces computational costs by performing off-line learning of system parameters. The SLAIMM method is compared with the classical IMM, the Munir Adaptive IMM, and the Maybeck Moving-Bank multiple-model adaptive estimator (MBMMAE).

A Hybrid Positioning Strategy for Vehicles in a Tunnel Based on RFID and In-Vehicle Sensors

Many intelligent transportation system applications require accurate, reliable, and continuous vehicle positioning. How to achieve such positioning performance in extended GPS-denied environments such as tunnels is the main challenge for land vehicles. This paper proposes a hybrid multi-sensor fusion strategy for vehicle positioning in tunnels. First, the preliminary positioning algorithm is developed. The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is introduced to achieve preliminary positioning in the tunnel. The received signal strength (RSS) is used as an indicator to calculate the distances between the RFID tags and reader, and then a Least Mean Square (LMS) federated filter is designed to provide the preliminary position information for subsequent global fusion. Further, to improve the positioning performance in the tunnel, an interactive multiple model (IMM)-based global fusion algorithm is developed to fuse the data from preliminary positioning results and low-cost in-vehicle sensors, such as electronic compasses and wheel speed sensors. In the actual implementation of IMM, the strong tracking extended Kalman filter (STEKF) algorithm is designed to replace the conventional extended Kalman filter (EKF) to achieve model individual filtering. Finally, the proposed strategy is evaluated through experiments. The results validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

This paper proposes a radar radiation control method based on cooperation tracking of multiple sensors. The main idea of the method is passive tracking in multiple platforms is used preferentially, while radar tracks target timely according to the tracking accuracy. In this paper, a tracking accuracy metric called interactive multiple model predicted covariance (IMMPC) is derived by IMM-EKF algorithm. By comparing with the pre-defined threshold, whether or not the radar transmitter radiates energy is determined. Simulation results show that the proposed radiation control method can reduce the radar radiation times effectively and have a good performance of low probability of interception (LPI).
