Two major approaches to deal with randomness or ambiguity involved in mathematical programming problems have been developed. They are stochastic programming approaches and fuzzy programming approaches. In this paper, we focus on multiobjective linear programming problems with random variable coefficients in objective functions and/or constraints. Using the probability maximization model to maximize the probability that each objective function becomes a certain value under chance constrained conditions, the stochastic programming problems are transformed into deterministic ones. As a fusion of stochastic approaches and fuzzy ones, after determining the fuzzy, goals of the decision maker, an interactive fuzzy satisficing method to derive a satisficing solution for the decision maker by updating the reference membership levels is presented. An illustrative numerical example is provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

While working with clients in the last years of his life, Gordon Pask produced an axiomatic scheme for his Interactions of Actors Theory which is a development of his well known Conversation Theory. These axioms are interpretable as a general theory of self-organisation and are discussed as charactetistic of field concurrence and as part of the second-order cybernetics canon. An application to population density is reported supported by both kinematic and kinetic simulation. Implications for cardiovascular anti-coagulation therapy and planetary evolution are discussed.

With the recent advances in mobile networking, context-aware computing, and sensor-based computing, researchers and game designers are able to explore the potential of combining these new technologies to develop mobile, networked, context-aware, augmented reality multiplayer games. As part of new research collaboration between Lancaster University, Cisco Systems, Microsoft Research and Orange - MIPv6 Systems Research Lab, such a mobile context-aware multiplayer game is proposed and explored. The proposed game, Real Tournament, gathers real-time contextual information, e.g. physical location and orientation, from the players and injects them into the game engine to generate game events.

This paper attempts to explicate the characteristics of the complex Problem Per se. By reflecting upon several lofty Philosophies, this paper argues that a complex problem consists of two parts: human's incapacity of mental power and human's cognitive dissonance. Grounded in these presumptions, this paper will illustrate that the conventional engineering approach, which primarily rests on a single observer's favourable model, is inadequate to cope with the complex issue. By reviewing several prevailing soft approaches, this paper promotes interactive management (IM) as a useful methodology for intervening in the complex problem. A case study of employing IM in a South African media context is given to demonstrate its usage.

Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is an XML-based vector graphics standard developed by the World Wide Web Consortium. The National Archives of Singapore recently launched an online virtual exhibition, Colours in the Wind, which was developed using Macromedia Flash, the most widely used format for animated and interactive vector-based Web content. The current work reports on the experiences in developing an SVG-based version of this exhibition as well as the exploration of SVG's potential for developing future virtual exhibitions as an alternative to Flash. Observations from the SVG effort are discussed together with descriptions of techniques used and the limitations and problems that SVG poses to developers. A comparative study involving the usability features of the Flash and SVG versions of the virtual exhibition is also described. Results indicate that users are positive towards SVG and suggest the viability of the technology as a development platform.

In this paper, focusing on general multiobjective 0-1 programming problems involving positive and negative coefficients, we propose an interactive fuzzy satisficing method by extending our previous genetic algorithms with double strings for multiobjective multidimensional 0-1 knapsack problems. In the extended genetic algorithms, a new decoding algorithm for individuals represented by double strings which maps each individual to a feasible solution is proposed through the introduction of backtracking and individual modification. After examining the feasibility and efficiency of the extended genetic algorithms with double strings using a lot of 0-1 programming problems involving positive and negative coefficients, an illustrative numerical example demonstrated the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed interactive fuzzy satisficing method. Mass spectra of oligonucleotides derived from collision-induced dissociation following electrospray ionization provide an effective means of sequence determination, at the 20-mer level and below. An interactive, stand-alone computer program, Simple Oligonucleotide Sequencer (SOS) has been developed for rapid oligonucleotide sequencing from mass spectra, under user control on a residue by residue basis. Modifications can be defined in any combination for the base, sugar or backbone. Sequence ladders can be independently constructed in both the 5' --> 3' directions and 3' --> 5' directions, and graphically compared for homology and overlap. A particular advantage of this method is the ability to easily erase and rebuild alternate subsequences. The program can be used for ab initio sequencing of modified or unmodified oligonucleotides, for rapid verification of sequence, and in studies of fragmentation processes of model oligonucleotide derivatives.
