POLROB - A Manipulator Level programming Language

In this paper a new programming language, POLROB, is presented. POLROB is embedded in standard Pascal language which makes the program structure very simple and similar to that in Pascal. All different files concerning with concept of data, concept of action, input- output are introduced in very systematic manner. The language provides the user with high-level programming capabilities to facilitate the interactive programming of a robot for a new task or the modification of an axisting one. A simple system for world modelling using manipulator equipped with bendy pointer, as a measuring tool in three dimensions, is implemented. POLROB has been run at personal computer IBM PC XT/AT. The language has been used to program the movements of two polish educational robots in a flexible way.

Successful engagement in graduate attribute assessment using software

Purpose - The benefits of an educational shift to graduate attribute development have been foregrounded in the educational literature since the early 1990s. Attribute mapping in documentation with no change to assessment constitutes a surface approach. This paper aims to use as an example a deep approach that uses software to facilitate staff and student engagement. Design/methodology/approach - In 2002 the author developed online criteria-based assessment software ReView, together with a process involving the constructive alignment of assessment tasks. This was used in an academic development context to assist staff to integrate graduate attribute development through the assessment of student work. The time-saving features of the online software, colour-coded feedback about attribute development and its facilitation of students' self-assessment were significantly successful parts of this approach. Findings - A time-saving strategy using software as a facilitator can encourage change to assessment practices. The inclusion of discipline content as part of attribute-related assessment criteria assisted staff engagement with a developmental approach to attributes. Top-down directives need bottom-up processes and both are assisted by factors such as external accreditation and course reviews. Originality/value - The paper clarifies graduate attribute terminology issues and identifies problems with "top-down directives". It describes innovative online criteria-based assessment software used to facilitate graduate attribute integration and student self-assessment. Assessment processes that give students a progressive portrait of their attribute development are few and far between. This paper offers data about one successful approach to this issue. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

This paper provides an analysis of the role face-to-face residencies play in online, cross-national, graduate degree programs. In 2011, taking a cyberlearning approach, the IDPP developed the world's first fully online masters program in international and comparative disability policy, focused on students with disabilities in the ten countries of Southeast Asia. Using this online masters program as a case study, and incorporating pre-and post-residency survey data, the paper explores the impact of its face-to-face residency in building a sense of community, achieving learning outcomes, and highlight the role of culture and trust within the student cohort as a foundation for the online graduate learning experience. Finally, the paper discusses best practices in evaluating online graduate degree programs, emphasizing the importance of an evaluation committee and an iterative evaluation model. Using pioneering research on evaluating accessible cyberlearning, it identifies what works in such settings as well as identifying future research needs.

In this article, we study how learning affects the dynamics of opinion formation in a population of agents modeled through the so-called naming game. This agent-based model captures the essential features of the agreement dynamics by means of a memory-driven negotiation process. We analyze the impact of learning in such social agreement model through a control parameter a describing the resistance toward learning. We show that there exists a critical a above which the consensus time diverges. In particular, we embed this model on various interaction topologies and real-world face-to-face interaction data and, thereby, point out the important differences in the agreement dynamics that take place in a real time-varying social settings vis-a-vis different static social settings. Remarkably, in all types of topology, we observe that beyond the critical value of a, the number of unique words increase manifold in the system and hence the time to consensus diverges possibly pointing to an universal aspect of language learning. In order to support the simulation results, we further develop a web-based online game - the 'tagging game' - which is a close correlate of the naming game and observe the game dynamics when human subjects are exposed to play the game. Remarkably, similar characteristic properties as that of the modified naming game is observed here even while different people from different geographical location play the game. This shows that synthetic modeling has nowadays reached the maturity to answer certain long-standing questions in cognitive science reasonably well.

A TAPS interactive multimedia package to solve engineering dynamics problem

Purpose - To expose engineering students to using modern technologies, such as multimedia packages, to learn, visualize and solve engineering problems, such as in mechanics dynamics. Design/methodology/approach - A multimedia problem-solving prototype package is developed to help students solve an engineering problem in a step-by-step approach. A learning architecture model for developing an interactive technology-assisted problem solving (TAPS) package for visualizing engineering concepts has been discussed. Findings - The learning model was found to be easy to follow and use and the engineering package can be designed in an easy and visually appealing format. The TAPS package implemented and described in this paper could support and provide students with a better understanding of the basic concepts in an engineering mechanics dynamics course in particular. Research limitations/implications - The evaluation of the TAPS package materials comprised mainly quantitative methods which provided validation of the package approach for the acquisition of procedural skills and related basic concepts. More work is necessary to employ qualitative approaches for more detailed analysis of usability of particular materials of the TAPS package. Originality/value - The main originality of the paper can be seen from the development of the package that guides the student intelligently to solve the selected engineering problem. In addition, important user tools are also included which the user may need to use if necessary. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

This paper presents jacamo-web, an interactive programming IDE for developing Multi-Agent Systems (MAS). The standard programming method usually follows the sequence of compile, link and execute the application. Alternatively, the so-called interactive programming provides a way to modify a system while it is running. Besides saving developing time, it maintains the system's availability since the application is kept running while it is being changed. To illustrate jacamo-web interactive functions, we have developed a MAS for the financial market. It checks data of companies and applies known formulae to suggest whether to buy assets or not.

Analyses with data mining and knowledge discovery techniques are not always successful as they occasionally yield no actionable results. This is especially true in the Big-Data context where we routinely deal with complex, heterogeneous, diverse and rapidly changing data. In this context, visual analytics play a key role in helping both experts and users to readily comprehend and better manage analyses carried on data stored in Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud services. To this end, humans should play a critical role in continually ascertaining the value of the processed information and are invariably deemed to be the instigators of actionable tasks. The latter is facilitated with the assistance of sophisticated tools that let humans interface with the data through vision and interaction. When working with Big-Data problems, both scale and nature of data undoubtedly present a barrier in implementing responsive applications. In this paper, we propose a software architecture that seeks to empower Big-Data analysts with visual analytics tools atop large-scale data stored in and processed by IaaS. Our key goal is to not only yield on-line analytic processing but also provide the facilities for the users to effectively interact with the underlying IaaS machinery. Although we focus on hierarchical and spatiotemporal datasets here, our proposed architecture is general and can be used to a wide number of application domains. The core design principles of our approach are: (a) On-line processing on cloud with Apache Spark. (b) Integration of interactive programming following the notebook paradigm through Apache Zeppelin. (c) Offering robust operation when data and/or schema change on the fly. Through experimentation with a prototype of our suggested architecture, we demonstrate not only the viability of our approach but also we show its value in a use-case involving publicly available crime data from United Kingdom.

In an object manipulation dialogue, a robot may misunderstand an ambiguous command from a user, such as "Place the cup down (on the table)," potentially resulting in an accident. Although making confirmation questions before all motion will decrease the risk of this failure, the user will find it more convenient if confirmation questions are not made under trivial situations. This paper proposes a method for estimating ambiguity in the commands by introducing an active learning framework with Bayesian logistic regression to human-robot spoken dialogue. We conducted physical experiments in which a user and a manipulator-based robot communicated in spoken language to manipulate toys.

Interfaces for machine learning (ML), information and visualizations about models or data, can help practitioners build robust and responsible ML systems. Despite their benefits, recent studies of ML teams and our interviews with practitioners (n=9) showed that ML interfaces have limited adoption in practice. While existing ML interfaces are effective for specific tasks, they are not designed to be reused, explored, and shared by multiple stakeholders in cross-functional teams. To enable analysis and communication between different ML practitioners, we designed and implemented Symphony, a framework for composing interactive ML interfaces with task-specific, data-driven components that can be used across platforms such as computational notebooks and web dashboards. We developed Symphony through participatory design sessions with 10 teams (n=31), and discuss our findings from deploying Symphony to 3 production ML projects at Apple. Symphony helped ML practitioners discover previously unknown issues like data duplicates and blind spots in models while enabling them to share insights with other stakeholders.
