This article presents a context adaptive approach for multimodal interaction for the use in cognitive technical systems, so called companion systems. A system architecture is presented and we clarify where context awareness occurs on different levels with a layered context model. The focus is on the topics of dialog management, multimodal fusion, and multimodal fission, as the main participants in interaction. An implemented prototype is presented, yielding some concrete instances of the described context models and the adaption to them.

In this work we study the problem of Authorship Attribution for a novel set of documents, namely online chats. Although the problem of Authorship Attribution has been extensively investigated for different document types, from books to letters and from emails to blog posts, to the best of our knowledge this is the first study of Authorship Attribution for conversational documents (IRC chat logs) using statistical models. We experimentally demonstrate the unsuitability of the classical statistical models for conversational documents and propose a novel approach which is able to achieve a high accuracy rate (up to 95%) for hundreds of authors.

Purpose - While building robots with anything akin to human cognition and intelligence remains a far off vision, making them more autonomous and responsive will allow them to be used in a greater variety of sophisticated tasks in the manufacturing and service sectors. With this aim, various groups of European researchers are making important progress on developing the technologies and bringing them together in a new generation of machines that are more aware of their environment and better able to interact with humans. This paper aims to look at this issue. Design/methodology/approach - This paper looks at how various groups of European researchers are making progress in developing a new generation of machines that are more aware of their environment and better able to interact with humans. Findings - The paper finds that replicating human-like intelligence and awareness is still a long way of - if indeed possible but researchers foresee robots akin to those they have developed becoming an everyday sight over the coming years in what are described as "gofer scenarios" Originality/value - The paper provides useful information on developments in robtics.

This thesis describes the Drag language. Drag is a general purpose, gradually typed, lexically scoped, and multi-paradigm programming language. The essence of Drag is to build the abstract syntax trees of the programs directly and interactively. Our work includes the language specification and a prototype program. The language specification focuses on the syntax, the semantic model, and the type system. The prototype consists of an interactive editor and a compiler that targets several platforms, among which we focus on the LLVM platform in this thesis.

Fast and efficient mathematical programming routines have been developed for network flow problems, but due to their complexity the average manager or lay analyst does not possess the mathematical programming backgroung required to construct the models or use the solution technology available. This problem is solved here by the development of an interactive network generating system designed to create, update, and solve a single -commodity network with only a minimal knowledge of network structure and only a rudimentary mastery of computer terminal use. This is accomplished through the interactive use of a set of FORTRAN programs which lead the user, step-by step, through the construction of the network by a series of queries, and which links with GNET, a machine independent FORTRAN program for the solution of capacitated network flow problems.

programming of process control applications still represents a hard job. Reasons for this are mainly the following facts: • computer based process control systems contain mixed hardware as well as dedicated hardware, • man/machine as well as process/machine communication are decisive parts of the whole system, and • dedicated real-time operating systems or rather real-time executives are often necessary instead of general purpose real-time operating systems. Another crucial problem is the availability of the (very expensive) computer scientists during the maintenance phase who developed the application software. Therefore it is of interest to enable the end-user to “describe” as well as to maintain his application himself. Obviously an end-user must have at his disposal a great amount of detailed basic knowledge in the area of computer science. For many applications the only way out of this situation is the interactive use of program generators which produce object programs from fill -in-the-blanks type source “programs”. However, this method up to now is not widely known, although employed by numerous users. A reason for this is that basic concepts of fill -in-the-blanks type languages and program generators are only incompletely published. In most cases the language was developed starting with an analysis of the application and the design of a fill-in-the-blanks language. Afterwards the same or another team worked on its implementation. Very often the outcome of such projects - know-how, tools and modules -are ignored in daughter projects. The paper surveys the basic principles of program generators with respect to its usage for process control systems.
