Any CS educator has to explain sooner or later a portion of code or a structured text to learners. The Codecast tool http://*** has been specially designed by CS educators and developed initially for MOOCs to replace non-interactive screencasts. This workshop is a hands-on lab to Codecast: an open-source innovative tool to create in-browser interactive coding tutorials. Codecast supports syntax highlighting for over 110 languages and as of 2017 can compile/interpret and execute a subset of the C and Arduino languages. In this workshop, participants will explore how, using our Codecast tool, a CS educator can explain the creation of a computer program while their audio as well as their interactions with the code editor and interpreter are being recorded for interactive playback. Workshop participants will furthermore experience how different aspects of the coding process like testing, running, debugging and optimizing can be illustrated with the help of several data, memory and algorithm visualization modules. Participants will create recordings and experience (like learners) how they can be played back interactively by taking control over and modify the coding process at any time. Codecast enables the learner to interact directly with the code and experiment with different ideas while listening to the instructor's explanation. The learner can make changes to the code, test it with different inputs, run the code step-by-step to better understand its behavior and visualize other parts of the algorithm or the data. Workshop participants will also integrate their creations in their online curricula.

Every year the University of South Australia is supporting and sponsoring projects which are innovative in the way teaching and learning is conducted. In this paper we would like to discuss one of our projects, called interactive Electronic tutorials (IET). tutorials play a vital role in engineering education, where the theory from lectures is put into practice through problem solving and going through examples. The original idea in 1999 was to create IET for students that would make them take an active part in their education and practice and allow them to learn independently. Consequently the IET were modified and reconstructed according to feedback received from students. The final modification was done in 2004, when the Internet version of EIT was introduced, enabling students to conduct tutorials without time restrictions and without a location restriction unlike before. We would like to share our experiences with web based teaching and learning, where the classical components of lectures, tutorials and practicals are still partially present but combined with the Internet components. We have specifically concentrated on the developments and improvements of IET based on our students' feedback and our observations during a six years period.

The effectiveness of web-based, multimedia tutorials for teaching methods of human body composition analysis

This study examined the effectiveness of a series of Web-based, multimedia tutorials on methods of human body composition analysis. tutorials were developed around four body composition topics: hydrodensitometry (underwater weighing), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, bioelectrical impedance analysis, and total body electrical conductivity. Thirty-two students enrolled in the course were randomly assigned to learn the material through either the Web-based tutorials only ("Computer"), a traditional lecture format ("Lecture"), or lectures supplemented with Web-based tutorials ("Both"). All students were administered a validated pretest before randomization and an identical posttest at the completion of the course. The reliability of the test was 0.84. The mean score changes from pretest to posttest were not significantly different among the groups (65.4 +/- 17.31, 78.82 +/- 21.50, and 76 +/- 21.22 for the Computer, Both, and Lecture groups, respectively). Additionally, a Likert-type assessment found equally positive attitudes toward all three formats. The results indicate that Web-based tutorials are as effective as the traditional lecture format for teaching these topics.

Graphic web-apps for teaching ternary diagrams and liquid-liquid extraction

Recent years have seen a rapid development in e-learning technologies. Specific topics;however, may require additional teaching tools created particularly for their unique characteristics. It is important that these tools are developed with learning outcomes in mind, and if possible are in a format easily accessible. We have developed graphic web applications for the teaching of liquid-liquid equilibria, single- and multi-stage liquid-liquid extraction using ternary phase diagrams. These applications allow students to draw liquid-liquid 2 phase equilibrium curves, calculate phase separation for a given mixture and graphically determine equilibrium stages;the correct results are then produced with hints for the students if they get stuck. Student usage figures and opinions have been collected for the application during trial use on a combined full-time taught and distance learning course in Engineering Separations at The University of Manchester. The presentation describes the set of ready to use simulation software that can be utilized for both the lesson illustrations and the virtual lab assignments. The interactive simulations allow learners to explore a topic by comparing and contrasting different scenarios. Users may get a deeper exposure to the subject matter either by modifying parts of existing simulation or by building a new simulation from scratch. Another advantage for the users is the ability of simulation illustration to be paused and restarted for reflection and note taking. Each chapter of the course is followed by originally developed computerized test. The computerized tests are three levels hierarchical applications that allow the random access to the question data bank.

How Levels of Interactivity in tutorials Affect Students' Learning of Modeling Transportation Problems in a Spreadsheet

Do students learn to model OR/MS problems better by using computer-based interactive tutorials and, if so, does increased interactivity in the tutorials lead to better learning? In order to determine the effect of different levels of interactivity on student learning, we used screen capture technology to design interactive support materials for modeling and solving the transportation problem in a spreadsheet. A controlled experiment was carried out and the results indicate a general support for the effectiveness of interactive tutorials in enhancing students' learning of modeling concepts. However, the study also found that excessive interactivity increased the cognitive load for the students and hindered their learning by making it difficult for them to consolidate concepts, integrate previous knowledge, and create meaningful mental models of the process.

This paper describes an online laboratory for a course on electronic devices and circuits aimed at complementing classroom teaching of undergraduate courses. The development is based on four levels of teaching, viz., lecture notes, interactive tutorials, simulation exercises, and performing a real experiment remotely. The current facility has been developed to support an undergraduate theory course, "Electronic Devices and Circuits" as a pre-laboratory session for a regular on-site laboratory. It can be also used as an alternative to a traditional laboratory especially for distance education programs, or for interdisciplinary first year courses not having lab component. The facility has also been developed as a teaching tool for classroom demonstrations.

Library Connection: An interactive, Personalized Orientation for Online Students

Library orientations are a very common learning experience for residential and online students. These all have similar goals of introducing students to the library and helping them feel more comfortable in navigating the library. The Library Connection is a unique type of library orientation that provides meaningful feedback to students in a personalized, connected learning environment. This program is offered through digital badges. A conventional qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the text responses of students completing this orientation. Six interesting themes emerged from these data including student perceptions of the use of the library, developing advanced search techniques, and managing a complex information environment. Interesting trends include the disparities between student and instructor perspectives of their learning and the need for a hybrid orientation that provides scaled instruction while still giving meaningful feedback and personalized responses to students from librarians. © 2018, Published with license by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC © 2018 Victoria Raish and Anne Behler.

As the students of the 21(st) century begin to enter into higher education, faculty's pedagogical styles and delivery methods must evolve to address the ever changing needs and skills of the student and society. One such method is through the use of web-based course management delivery systems and interactive software. Web-based interactive course management tools are relatively new educational phenomena. In the therapeutic and rehabilitative exercise curriculums this powerful new instrument could be utilized to enhance cognitive comprehension of basic theories, definitions and applications as well as function as a virtual assistant for the learning and mastery of various psychomotor skills utilized in manual therapy as well as a host of other skills necessary to succeed within the profession. Utilization of such tools allows for necessary foundational cognitive building outside the traditional classroom creating a more inclusive environment inside the classroom for deeper and richer problem-based learning exercise. In the rehabilitation settings it is not only important that the student understand the material but that they develop the necessary critical thinking skills for appropriate application of theoretical knowledge. It has been shown that problem-based learning is an effective way to improve an individual's critical thinking skills. In our model careful planning and implementation was needed to develop an interactive web-based instrument that would serve all students in the class regardless of their learning style or rate of comprehension.

Investigating learning with an interactive tutorial: A mixed-methods strategy

From the perspective of parallel mixed-methods research, this paper describes interactivity research that employed usability-testing technology to analyse cognitive learning processes;personal learning styles and times;and errors-and-recovery of learners using an interactive e-learning tutorial called Relations. Relations presents mathematical content for Theoretical Computer Science 1. It incorporates instructional content, scaffolding to support learning, worked examples and exercises. The findings from combining quantitative and qualitative studies were synergistic as they confirmed each other and also complemented each other when one data collection strategy provided insights and details not obtainable from the other. Data was mapped against concepts from the literature. This work makes methodological and practical contributions.
