Mexico recently embarked on a structural transformation to achieve universal social protection in health. This reform was based on what Reich and colleagues identified as the pillars of public policy: technical, political, and ethical.1 The three must act in harmony to support the complex edifice of reform. In particular, political agreements can only be reached when they are guided by ideas and ideals. Ideas take the form of knowledge derived from science. Ideals take the form of values derived from ethics. Ideas can be transformed into the evidence base for sound decision making. Ideals can be transformed into the integrity base for coherent action.

The article examines the 1959 cover design change of "Science" magazine from text to image in light of the belief in scientific progress and the cold war politics of the 1950s. It argues that the adoption of imagery over text was a way of making science more appealing to non-scientists. It served to deflect the skepticism that existed about the goodness of science as opposed to its mere utility and promoted the validity of scientific progress as a goal for the country. It notes that the cover images, while related to science, were not specifically related to the articles contained in the magazine. They served, it says, as a publicity engine for the appeal of science, and science was pressed into service in promoting a culture of progress.

Following an idea of Trevor Hicks we built neutron polarizing benders with silicon wafers forming the bender channels. In the last decade a variety of neutron optical devices based on this idea were realized such as collimators with absorbing as well as reflecting walls, radial benders and collimators and focusing devices which are all much shorter than their classical counterparts. I am not a historian. I am a landscape planner who looks toward the future. Even so, I know that most of the ideas that have shaped my work are old ideas. Recently, I decided to prepare a lecture to pay respect to people whose ideas have influenced me. In this published version, I will summarize a central and influential idea from each of about 30 people. This is, of course, a gross simplification. Each person produced a complex body of work, but each did one or two things that have had great influence on landscape planning, on me, and on many others. I have included some work in which I had a role, mainly to acknowledge those with whom I have had the pleasure of working.

Ideas on the global characteristics of the Vendian System and its fossil abundance have changed fundamentally in recent years. This is especially true of the microphytologic characteristics of the Lower Vendian, which includes a representative association developed worldwide of large acanthomorphic acritarchs of the so-called Pertatataka type. Similar associations of both organic-walled and silicified microfossils are encountered in Lower Vendian rocks of Australia, China, India, and Spitsbergen (see [1] for review and bibliography) and recently have been found on the East European Platform as well [2, 3]. The unique taxonomic composition of Pertatataka-type associations turns them into a reliable tool for correlating Lower Vendian rocks and allows the authors to solve a series of debatable problems of the Upper Proterozoic stratigraphy. They show in this work how new finds of organic-walled acritarchs from the Ura Formation (Dalnyaya Taiga Group, Patom Supergroup) make it possible to solve the inveterate strati-graphic problem of the age of these rocks and the status of the Baikalian unit.

Advancement in science often results from a healthy exchange of ideas among scientists working on similar problems. This collaboration fosters a sense of community among the scientists and is crucial to the development of science. There is ample evidence that students benefit in many ways from collaborative learning as well (1-7). The healthy exchange of ideas within small groups not only increases interest among the participants but also promotes critical thinking. Students working in groups are able to retain information longer as well as think at a higher level (3). The shared learning gives students an opportunity to engage in discussion, take responsibility for their own learning, and become critical thinkers (4, 6), In fact, collaborative learning has been shown to have a positive impact on student attitudes toward chemistry (8). The traditional chemistry lecture, however, does not typically provide students with opportunities to exchange ideas about the material presented, especially if it is a large class (> 50 students). Instructors hesitate to adopt collaborative learning methods for a large class, fearing that the time used in promoting effective discussion among students may limit the content covered. Instructors of content-rich courses, such as chemistry, do need to strike a balance between presenting course content and promoting discussion of that content in the classroom. It is possible to achieve this balance as several authors adopting different models of group learning have shown (7-9).
